NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Boston
(Wednesday, December 2nd)
Final Score: Boston 4, Tampa Bay 1
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Tim Thomas made a season-high 39 saves as Boston trounced Tampa Bay, 4-1, at TD Garden.
Marco Sturm tallied twice and Marc Savard celebrated his new seven-year contract extension with a tally for the Bruins, who have won six of seven.
Patrice Bergeron added a goal and two helpers while Mark Recchi recorded three assists for Boston.
Jeff Halpern provided the only offense for the Lightning, losers in six of eight. Mike Smith took the loss after allowing four goals on 39 shots.
Halpern broke up Thomas' shutout bid with 1:27 played in the third period but the Bolts were still behind 4-1.
Tampa peppered the net with 13 shots over the final 20 minutes but Thomas remained strong, stopping all others to lock up the win.
"We have to raise our game to their level. We have to find ways to stay in hockey games," said Smith. "You're down two after the first, it's tough to come back against a team like this. We had a lot of odd-man rushes against, and didn't take care of our scoring chances."
Boston took a 1-0 lead with a power play just over eight minutes into the game, as Savard tipped home a cross-crease pass from Derek Morris. Bergeron's second stab at a loose puck in the crease made it 2-0 with less than six minutes to play in the first.
"That's one of the focuses we had tonight, is to get the first goal and keep the lead," Savard admitted. "After the first, we emphasized getting the second, and it worked out perfectly."
The home team went up 3-0 with 6:24 left in the second as Sturm managed to slide a loose puck through a goalmouth scramble, under Smith, and into the net. Recchi appeared to have been the one to push the disc through, and it could have been his 550th career score, but Sturm was later credited.
Bergeron and Sturm then teamed up for a four-goal Bruins edge less than three minutes later.
Boston has won four of the last five meetings overall and has won three in a row over Tampa Bay at home...Zdeno Chara also had a pair of assists for the Bruins.
