NHL Game Summary - Florida at NY Islanders
(Saturday, January 31st)
Final Score: NY Islanders 3, Florida 1
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Yann Danis made 37 saves and came just 1:27 away from his first shutout of the season, as the New York Islanders logged a 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.
Mike Comrie had a goal and an assist while Bill Guerin and Kyle Okposo each lit the lamp for the Islanders, who matched a season-high with their third consecutive win.
"Our team defense as a whole has been great," said New York defenseman Chris Campoli. "We've been getting timely saves from Denis and when you combine those two good things will happen."
Gregory Campbell netted the lone goal while Tomas Vokoun gave up three goals on 30 shots for the Panthers, who had a two-game winning streak stopped.
"They capitalized on their opportunities and we didn't get a great effort across the board," said Florida coach Peter DeBoer. "This is a team that seems to have our number."
The Islanders scored the only goal of the first period thanks to a mistake by Vokoun. A dump-in to the Florida end resulted in the puck going on net. Vokoun controlled the disc and banked it off the backboard from the right side of the net, but his own skater was unable to get the puck and it bounced out to the left side where Comrie tapped it home past the surprised goaltender with 1:26 left in the frame.
Danis was busy in the first period and had to make 16 saves to keep the Panthers off the board.
Florida nearly got on the board halfway through the second as Michael Frolik skated in on the breakaway, but he was slashed by Mark Streit before getting the shot off and Danis was able to stop the weak attempt.
Streit was called for a minor on the play, but Florida was unable to beat Danis as he made several stops during the penalty kill.
New York tacked onto its lead at the 4:19 mark of the third thanks to Guerin, who grabbed the puck in the slot and used a spin-o-rama to shoot the puck past a defender and Vokoun.
Skating on the man advantage later in the third, the Islanders took a 3-0 lead as Trent Hunter threw a pass from the low right side to the slot where Okposo one-timed it from his knee into the net.
Danis' shutout bid was spoiled with 1:27 to play as Keith Ballard threw a shot on net from the left boards that Campbell tipped in.
