Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Vernon Fiddler scored the game's only goal in the first period, and Pekka Rinne recorded his third shutout of the season, as the Nashville Predators blanked the New York Islanders, 1-0, at the Sommet Center.
Rinne improved to 7-1-0 on the season after making 23 saves for the Predators, who have won four of their previous five home games. Martin Erat and Rich Peverley recorded the assists on Fiddler's goal.
Richard Park had a team-high four shots for the Islanders, who have now lost nine in a row to mark their longest losing streak since dropping 10 straight from December 22, 1997-January 12, 1998. Joey MacDonald stopped 27-of-28 shots in taking the loss.
Fiddler gave Nashville the early lead, getting a wrist shot past MacDonald a little less than seven minutes into the contest.
Each goalie saved eight shots in the second period, as neither team found the back of the net.
Both teams received matching penalties with 1:52 to play in the third, as the teams skated 4-on-4 for the remainder of the period. The Isles pulled their goalie with a minute left, but Rinne was brilliant yet again, stopping five total shots in the third for the shutout.
Nashville center Jason Arnott appeared in his 1,000th career game. He has played with the Oilers, Devils, Stars and Predators and has registered 334 goals and 448 assists in a career that began in 1993...The Islanders have lost eight straight on the road and...Nashville hasn't lost to the Isles since October 15, 2002.
