NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Phoenix

(Friday, January 2nd)

Final Score: Phoenix 5, NY Islanders 4

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Zbynek Michalek had a goal and an assist as the Phoenix Coyotes downed the New York Islanders, 5-4, at Jobing.com Arena.

Olli Jokinen, Shane Doan, Joakim Lindstrom and Viktor Tikhonov each lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who have won three of their last four. Mikael Tellqvist finished the game with 29 saves.

Richard Park had two goals and an assist while Doug Weight added two assists, the first of which was his 1,000th career point, for the Islanders, who have dropped three of four and 11 straight on the road.

Rick DiPietro, who missed the past three games with a groin injury, was charged with five goals on 33 shots. He also had an assist in the game.

Phoenix jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:46 into the contest on Tikhonov's unassisted goal.

The Islanders, though, answered at the 9:20 mark of the first on Sean Bergenheim's seventh goal of the season.

However, the Coyotes took a 2-1 lead before the first intermission, as Ed Jovanovski fired a pass from the low left side to the high slot where Michalek blasted a slap shot into the right corner of the net with just 10 ticks left on the clock.

Phoenix made it a 3-1 game with 4:55 left in the second as Doan's shot from the low left circle made its way through traffic and past DiPietro.

Tellqvist faced just five shots in the middle frame and stopped all of them.

Jokinen's 13th goal of the season at the 3:10 mark of the third put the Coyotes up by three, but Josh Bailey made it a 4-2 contest with his first NHL goal 31 seconds later.

"It was wearing on me for quite a bit," said Bailey. "Hopefully the flood gates will open a little bit."

Lindstrom scored a goal at the 13:33 mark for a 5-2 Coyotes lead.

Park's goal with 3:06 to play made it a 5-3 game. Weight notched his 1,000th point with an assist on the tally, and Park's one-timer from the left circle off a feed from Mark Streit with 28 seconds to play made it a one-goal game.

"It felt good," said Weight. "I think it would've been better if we would've been able to creep back into a tie."

The Islanders, though, were unable to net the equalizer as the Coyotes held on for the win.
