NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at New York

(Saturday, December 6th)

Final Score: Atlanta 5, NY Islanders 1

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists, as the Atlanta Thrashers dominated the New York Islanders, 5-1, at Nassau Coliseum.

Bryan Little, Eric Perrin, Chris Thorburn and Eric Boulton each scored once for Atlanta, which snapped a five-game losing streak one contest after it lost 5-1 to Ottawa.

Johan Hedberg made 28 saves in the win for the Thrashers.

"We've been struggling mightily here lately, so however the win looks doesn't matter as long as it's two points," Hedberg said. "I don't think this game will go down in history as the best-looking one, but we'll take it."

Bill Guerin had the lone goal for the Islanders, who have lost two in a row and four of five. Joey MacDonald allowed all five goals on 17 shots faced.

"I felt great coming into tonight, I had lots of energy, and it was just one of those nights the harder you try to work the worse it gets," MacDonald said. "I felt the team played pretty well tonight. I kind of let them down I thought."

Guerin gave the Islanders the lead just 51 seconds into the game on a power- play goal. But Atlanta tied the game in the first, then had four more unanswered goals to turn the game into a rout.

Little had the equalizer with 2:16 remaining in the opening frame. Garnet Exelby wheeled around on the right side of the ice and put a pass on the tape of Little, who one-timed the puck into the net.

Midway through the second period, Kovalchuk made a quick move as he skated toward the right side of the net and flicked the puck between MacDonald and the post for a 2-1 lead.

Boulton scored with 4:37 left in the middle frame for a 3-1 lead, and at the 7:19 mark of the third, Perrin's power-play marker gave Atlanta a three-goal cushion.

Thorburn scored with 8:57 left in the contest, and the Thrashers cruised to the finish from there.
