Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers was solid again Sunday in Week 3, throwing for 256 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Insight: Rivers has just one interception over the first three games with six touchdowns passes. He hasn't thrown for 300 yards yet, but he's going to give you solid production every week.
Hot9/14/2014 7:44:00 PM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers didn't have much trouble with the Seahawks much-heralded defense, going 19-of-23 for 191 yards and two touchdowns ... in the first half.
Insight: He finished well too, with 284 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
2/1/2014 9:30:00 PM
Description: And the award for NFL's Comeback Player of the Year goes to ... none other than Chargers QB Philip Rivers.
Insight: Peyton Manning won Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2012. He's since graduated to the MVP award. While we don't predict that will happen with Rivers, he did have a remarkable year, throwing for 32 TD and 4,478 passing yards en route to a 105.5 quarterback rating. He figures to be a top-ten quarterback heading into next year's fantasy draft.
11/24/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: The Chargers captured an upset win over Kansas City thanks to 392 yards of offense from Philip Rivers.
Insight: Philips delivered three touchdown throws in San Diego's stunning 41-38 victory. His 106.6 quarterback rating through 11 games is a career-high.
Hot9/29/2013 7:42:00 PM
Description: San Diego QB Philip Rivers exploded for over 400 yards Sunday against Dallas.
Insight: After falling off the map in 2012, Rivers has come back strong with 11 TD and just two interceptions in his first four games this season. Sunday was the veteran's second 400-yard performance in the last three weeks. He'll try to keep it going next week against Oakland.
Hot9/15/2013 5:45:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has seven touchdowns after two weeks.
Insight: He threw three scores and had 419 yards on 36-of-47 passing Sunday at Philadelphia. After two straight disappointing seasons, Rivers appears to be back on the fantasy radar now that Mike McCoy is heading up this operation instead of Norv Turner.
6/18/2013 1:30:00 PM
Description: The Chargers are expected to scrap the vertical-oriented attack of the past few years in favor of a short-passing scheme, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Insight: New Chargers coach Mike McCoy, who was the offensive coordinator in Denverl last season, wants to get the ball out of Philip Rivers' hand quicker. Rivers has been one of the NFL's top deep passers since 2008, but he was sacked 49 times last season and has turned the ball over 47 times over the last two years. Change is necessary to cope with San Diego's terrible offensive line.
12/30/2012 7:37:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers completed 13-of-17 for 151 yards and two touchdowns Sunday against the Raiders.
Insight: Rivers had a decent finish to the season, throwing for eight touchdowns with zero picks in the final four games but he failed to throw for more than 165 yards in three of them. His 3,606 yards are his lowest since 2007. Rivers has turned the ball over 47 times over the past two season and will certainly be drafted outside the top-15 quarterbacks in 2013.
12/9/2012 7:26:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers only completed 50 percent of his passes but still threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns with zero turnovers Sunday against the Steelers.
Insight: Rivers is no longer a top fantasy QB, and should really only be used in favorable matchups. Sunday was not one of them, so many fantasy owners likely had Rivers on the bench.
12/9/2012 12:20:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be without three offensive lineman in Week 14. It's hard to throw the ball from your back or surring for your life.
Insight: It's tough enough facing the top-ranked Steelers' defense when you are healthy. Expect Rivers to have a tough afternoon. The same goes for Danario Alexander, Malcom Floyd and Antonio Gates.
11/11/2012 12:17:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be without left tackle Jared Gaither for the fifth time this season due to a groin injury.
Insight: Rivers is coming off one of his top performances this season, throwing for 220 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 18-of-20 passing in Week 9 against the Chiefs. He has another favorable matchup in Week 10 against the Buccaneers but might not be able to take advantage of it with his left tackle out.
Hot11/11/2012 12:17:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers carved up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 337 yards and three touchdowns on 29-of-37 passing but also threw two interceptions.
Insight: Rivers may not be the same fantasy QB he once was but he has thrown multiple touchdown passes in six of nine games this season.
11/1/2012 11:21:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was nearly perfect Thursday versus Kansas City, completing 18-of-20 for 220 yards with two touchdowns and a pick.
Insight: Rivers threw four interceptions and lost two fumbles two weeks ago against the Broncos and threw just 154 yards on 18-of-34 passing in slippery conditions Sunday against the Browns but he returned to form Thursday against the sad sack Chiefs. He has another favorable matchup next week at Tampa Bay.
10/15/2012 11:47:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had 242 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-41 passing Monday night against the Broncos but he also turned it over six times as San Diego blew a 24-0 lead.
Insight: Rivers threw four INTs and lost two fumbles in the game. The quarterback turned it over a career-high 25 times last season; he's on pace for 32 turnovers this season after Monday's debacle.
9/23/2012 7:10:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers made it look like the first half of 2011 Sunday against the Falcons. Rivers threw two interceptions and completed just 55.3 percent of his passes.
Insight: Rivers went 21-of-38 for 173 yards and failed to throw a touchdown pass against Atlanta. He came into Week 3 with a 4-to-1 TD/INT ratio and a 73.8 completion percentage.
10/26/2011 6:33:00 PM
Description: Amid speculation that he's playing hurt, Philip Rivers insisted Wednesday that he's "as healthy as I've been through six weeks. Source: Michael Gehlken via Twitter
Insight: He's a gamer and probably wouldn't admit he had an injury anyway. However, it doesn't change the fact that he hasn't performed up to his normal standards. He doesn't have the same zip and his INTs are up because of it. We consider him a high end QB2 until he gets things turned around.
7/5/2011 2:43:00 PM
Description: Chargers GM A.J. Smith does not regret the blockbuster draft deal he orchestrated in 2004 when he traded QB Eli Manning to the New York Giants for QB Philip Rivers, even though Manning and the Giants won a Super Bowl after the 2007 season. SOURCE: SPORTING NEWS
Insight: Smith believes it absolutely was the right move. "I believe with my heart and soul that he one day will lead the Chargers to a world championship," Smith said. "He's a great quarterback - a phenomenal leader with great character, great work habits." Had Rivers been 100% healthy in 2007, it might have been the Chargers vs. the Giants in that Super Bowl instead of the Patriots. Rivers fantasy numbers have obviously been better than Manning's over the years, but the title has eluded him.
5/27/2011 9:51:00 AM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers has warmed up to the idea of the team acquiring Panthers WR Steve Smith. SOURCE: PRO FOOTBALL TALK
Insight: "Bring it on," Rivers said during a television interview Wednesday. "We have a great deal of weapons, and I certainly appreciate each and every one of them, but any chance you can add a guy of that caliber, I'm all for it." Again, a QB posturing for a free-agent WR. Smith would give them a veteran deep threat who can stretch the field and keep defenses from double-teaming Antonio Gates.
12/28/2010 3:04:00 PM
Description: The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that owner Dean Spanos confirmed Monday night that Norv Turner will return as the Chargers' head coach in 2011.
Insight: GM A.J. Smith will also be back. "We have a good core, and I don?t care what anybody says," said Spanos. "I?m not afraid to make changes. If I thought it was warranted, I would do it. We have a good foundation here." With a slew of free agents, the Chargers roster could change dramatically in 2011. (
12/17/2010 3:03:00 PM
Description: Philip Rivers was 19-25 for 273 yards and three touchdowns on Thursday night against San Francisco.
Insight: Rivers was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of backup up Billy Volek. With a banged-up Bengals defense on deck for week 16, Rivers should continue his dominance of the 2010 season. (
