Description: The Chiefs are hoping to sign QB Alex Smith to a long-term contract later this offseason. SOURCE: National Football Post
Insight: Statistically, this was easily the best season of Smith's career (23 TD, 7 INT, 3,313 passing yards in 15 contests). As it stands now, Smith will be a free agent after the 2014 season.

1/4/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith was terrific in Saturday's loss to Indianapolis. He finished the game with four touchdowns, no picks and 378 passing yards.
Insight: He also picked up 57 yards rushing on eight attempts. The 378 yards through the air were a season-high for Smith, whose lone blemish came on a fumble about midway through the third quarter. According to Elias, Smith is the first QB in NFL history to record at least 4 TD with no interceptions in a loss.

12/29/2013 3:13:00 PM
Description: The Chiefs didn't even bother to activate Alex Smith for Week 17.
Insight: Andy Reid has elected to rest his starters ahead of next week's Wild Card game. Smith will finish his first season in Kansas City with 23 TD, 7 INT and an impressive 89.1 quarterback rating. Backup Chase Daniel will draw the start at quarterback.

12/25/2013 9:44:00 AM
Description: Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will likely see very little action in Week 17.
Insight: Smith should give way to Chase Daniel as Kansas City is locked in as the fifth seed and has zero to play for. Andy Reid has always rested his stars in this situation.

Hot12/15/2013 7:27:00 PM
Description: Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith dropped 287 yards and five touchdowns on the Raiders in Week 15.
Insight: Smith was helped by a colossal game from Jamaal Charles, who had 195 yards and four TDs through the air. The veteran QB has averaged 21.4 fantasy points per game over his last five games, scoring at least 21 points in four of them.

9/29/2013 5:43:00 PM
Description: Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns and rushed seven times for 37 yards Sunday against the Giants to help Kansas City improve to 4-0.
Insight: Smith doesn't take many risks when throwing the football but he has three multi-touchdown games and has contributed a surprising 151 yards on the ground.

2/27/2013 4:48:00 PM
Description: Jay Glazer of FOX Sports first reported that the 49ers have traded Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for two draft picks, a second-rounder in 2013 and conditional third-rounder in 2014. The deal is completed but won't be made official by the league until the new NFL year begins on March 12.
Insight: Smith's best years have come under Jim Harbaugh the last two seasons, but San Francisco found a new franchise quarterback in Colin Kaepernick after Smith suffered a concussion in the 10th game of the season. Even in 2012-13, when he had a 104.1 QB rating and 70.2 completion percentage, Smith didn't do much for fantasy owners as more of a game manager type of quarterback. New Chiefs coach Andy Reid likes to throw the ball, but Smith's fantasy value isn't likely to change much.

2/24/2013 8:11:00 PM
Description: According to Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports, the 49ers have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Alex Smith, though the deal won't become official until March 12th when the new league year begins.
Insight: La Canfora couldn't confirm which team Smith would be traded to, though Kansas City would seem to be the most likely destination. Smith threw for 13 touchdowns and five interceptions last season before being replaced by Colin Kaepernick in Week 11.

2/22/2013 6:27:00 PM
Description: Chris Mortensen from ESPN thinks it's highly unlikely that the 49ers will cut backup quarterback Alex Smith this offseason.
Insight: The Niners would much rather trade Smith than let him go and get nothing back in return. The trouble is, Smith hasn't generated much interest at all around the league. It's a sticky situation for sure and one that may not be resolved until April 1st when Smith becomes eligible to receive his $1 million roster bonus.

2/13/2013 7:32:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that 49ers QB Alex Smith hasn't generated much interest on the trade market.
Insight: Three months ago, Smith (13 TD, 5 INT in 10 games) was the quarterback for a division-leader. Today, he's trapped on that same team with no way out. It seems like a waste to keep Smith as a backup but for some reason, nobody is jumping at the chance to acquire a quarterback who threw for a QB rating of 104.1 in 2012. Maybe the market will open up for Smith later this offseason, but for now it looks like he'll remain with the 49ers.

1/27/2013 8:20:00 PM
Description: San Francisco QB Alex Smith is expected to ask for his release after the season according to Mike Fiorio from Profootballtalk.com.
Insight: Smith missed one week because of a concussion and never saw the field again (with the exception of one pass in the season finale against the Cardinals) after coach Jim Harbaugh handed the controls over to second-year sensation Colin Kaepernick. Smith (104.1 QB rating, 13 TD, 5 INT) was having a solid season before he got hurt so he shouldn't have any trouble landing a starting job if the 49ers cut him.

11/25/2012 3:32:00 PM
Description: San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith (concussion) is active for Week 12 against New Orleans, but will not start.
Insight: Given how well backup Colin Kaepernick played against Chicago it's no surprise that he replaced Smith. Hopefully you picked up Kaepernick as an insurance policy last week.

11/21/2012 4:00:00 PM
Description: San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith (concussion symptoms) practiced on Wednesday, though he did not take any hits.
Insight: Given how well backup Colin Kaepernick played against Chicago, if there is any question to Smith's health the 49ers will likely err on the side of caution. Hopefully you picked up Kaepernick as an insurance policy last week.

11/20/2012 11:56:00 AM
Description: San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith is questionable for Sunday's game against New Orleans due to his ongoing concussion symptoms.
Insight: Given how well backup Colin Kaepernick played against Chicago, if there is any question to Smith's health the 49ers will likely err on the side of caution. Hopefully you picked up Kaepernick as an insurance policy last week.

11/19/2012 9:02:00 AM
Description: Fantasy alert: Niners quarterback Alex Smith has been ruled out for Monday night's game against the Bears according to Chris Mortensen from ESPN. Smith is still recovering from a concussion and was unable to receive clearance from a neurologist.
Insight: He'll hand the reigns over to backup Colin Kaepernick. Hopefully you picked up Kaepernick as an insurance policy earlier in the week.

11/17/2012 3:54:00 PM
Description: San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith (concussion) practiced in the non-contact jersey for the fourth straight day but Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group thinks he will start Monday against the Bears.
Insight: If Smith was in any danger of missing Monday's game we doubt he'd be out on the field at all. With a showdown versus the Bears on the docket, you won't be starting Smith in fantasy. Most of his weapons will be shaky plays as well.

11/15/2012 6:31:00 PM
Description: 49ers QB Alex Smith (concussion) returned to a limited practice Thursday, a sign that he's on track to play Monday against the Bears.
Insight: "If there was any doubt, he wouldn't have been out there," CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco tweeted Thursday. "Expect him to play." Smith passed concussion tests Wednesday, three days after exiting early from San Francisco's tie versus St. Louis.

11/14/2012 8:14:00 PM
Description: 49ers QB Alex Smith has passed all his concussion tests and should be on track to play Monday night against the Bears according to ESPN.
Insight: Smith injured himself about halfway through Sunday's tie against St. Louis. His 104.1 QB rating through nine games is the highest of his career.

11/11/2012 5:47:00 PM
Description: San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith left Sunday's game versus the Rams after taking a big hit while scrambling. He has been ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion.
Insight: Smith turned into a hit while going down at the end of a run and took the brunt of it to the back of his head. Colin Kaepernick will play QB the rest of the game.

10/15/2012 11:18:00 AM
Description: San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith was picked off three times Sunday in a loss to the Giants.
Insight: Smith had thrown just one pick all year before Sunday's game and he only threw five interceptions all season in 2011. He'll have a chance to redeem himself this Thursday against the 4-2 Seahawks.
