Description: Lions kicker David Akers has done very little during the team's OTAs.
Insight: Akers was the top fantasy kicker after booting 44 field goals in 2011-12, but slumped last season and some of that was due to an aggravation of offseason surgery. He's hoping to be completely healthy before he starts kicking. Be very wary of picking Akers until you know he's 100 percent healthy.

Description: Former 49ers kicker David Akers has been signed by the Detroit Lions to replace long-time kicker Jason Hanson.
Insight: Akers was the top fantasy kicker after booting 44 field goals in 2011-12, but slumped last season, missing nine of 38 field goal attempts. He should find kicking indoors a boon to his accuracy and could once again be a top fantasy kicker.

Description: The 49ers have released kicker David Akers after missing an NFL-high 13 field goals last season.
Insight: Akers was the top fantasy kicker selected last season after booting 44 field goals in 2011-12, an NFL record. His downfall is further proof that fantasy owners shouldn't select a kicker until the last round of drafts.

Description: Matt Maiocco from Comcast Bay Area reports that David Akers will handle the kicking duties for San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII.
Insight: Akers cost the Niners three points by missing a very makeable 38-yarder Sunday against the Falcons. San Francisco's other option at kicker for next week is journeyman Billy Cundiff, so it makes senses to stick with Akers.

Insight: Billy Cundiff will remain on the roster as insurance but is unlikely to suit up Saturday. San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said Akers gives the team its "best chance to win." After a record-setting 2011-12 season that saw Akers drill 44 field goals in 52 attempts, he only made 29-of-42 (69 percent) this season.
1/8/2013 10:14:00 AM
Description: San Francisco place-kicker David Akers and newly-signed Billy Cundiff could both be on this weekend's roster, according to coach Jim Harbaugh.
Insight: Harbaugh wouldn't say which of the two would get the field goal tries in Saturday's game against Green Bay, but did say there was a "leader in the clubhouse," Akers hasn't been very good this season, making only 29-of-42 field goal attempts and dealing with a hip injury. Unless we are given better updates you should avoid using either kicker.
1/2/2013 4:39:00 PM
Description: San Francisco place-kicker David Akers, who has been dealing with a hip problem, has company on the 49ers roster in the form of Billy Cundiff.
Insight: Akers hasn't been very good this season, making only 29-of-42 field goal attempts and will apparently have a competition to see who will play next week.
11/28/2012 3:52:00 PM
Description: Coach Jim Harbaugh said kicker David Akers is questionable for Week 13, but did not disclose an injury. San Francisco worked out Billy Cundiff and Nate Kaeding on Tuesday, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
Insight: Akers hasn't been very good this season, making only 19-of-27 field goal attempts and is just 7-for-14 from 40-yards and beyond.
1/31/2011 2:00:00 PM
Description: It came out over the weekend that Akers was dealing with a potential cancer diagnosis for his 6-year-old daughter, Halley, when he missed two field goals in the Eagles' Wild Card round playoff loss.
Insight: It's never good news to find out about a child possible dealing with cancer, but this at least helps to explain what otherwise seemed a meltdown from one of the league's most consistent kickers. It didn't stop Andy Reid from assessing the misses coldly after the game, though, which may help to keep Akers -- a pending free agent -- from re-signing with the Eagles. (RapidDraft.com)

Description: Impending free agent K David Akers wants to continue his playing career in Philadelphia. SOURCE: PHILLY.COM
Insight: After Akers missed two crucial field goals in the loss to the Packers in the first round of the playoffs, Andy Reid sort of threw him under the boss, which isn't what Reid usually does if a player makes a mistake during a game. There are rumors that Akers turned down a deal weeks ago, but nothing concrete has ever been reported. If Akers doesn't return to Philly, he will get a nice sum of money in free agency.
6/17/2009 2:22:00 AM
Description: Akers was 33-for-40 in field goal attempts to go along with 45 extra points last season with Eagles.
Insight: Akers remains one of the best kickers in the league and with the Eagles' offense looking to be revamped, he could be in line for another big year. (SpprtsBuff.com)
11/26/2008 9:58:00 AM
Description: Akers was held without a field goal in Week 12 and that was the first time all year he went without one. He is still a viable No. 1 option in all formats.
Insight: Akers has been a durable kicker for his entire career and is a solid No. 1 in all formats. (SportsBuff.com)
10/31/2008 12:45:00 PM
Description: Akers has been a solid kicker for his entire career. The Philadelphia offense has been moving the football for most of the season and that usually translates into scoring opportunities for their kicker.
Insight: Consider Akers a solid fantasy play in Week 9 in Seattle. The weather is expected to be mild in Seattle this weekend but with a chance for rain. (SportsBuff.com)
