Description: The 49ers would only bring back free agent LB Manny Lawson "at the right price." SOURCE: SACRAMENTO BEE
Insight: Lawson's value is diminished because the team doesn't have a bookend linebacker to take pressure off, which doesn't help him get to the quarterback as much as the team would like. Lawson could convert to strong-side linebacker if the team switches to a 4-3 scheme.

Description: Niners LB Manny Lawson left in the first quarter of Week 4 with a knee contusion.
Insight: His return to the game is questionable.

8/25/2010 1:01:00 AM
Description: ESPN.com's Mike Sando reports, via Twitter, that 49ers' head coach Mike Singletary predicts Lawson will "have a breakout year" this season.
Insight: Lawson has six sacks over the last 10 games of 2009 and is in a contract year, so has plenty of motivation to have a big 2010 season. (Rapid Draft.com)

Description: Comcast Sports Bay Area reports Lawson was in "tremendous physical condition" at the 49ers' mini-camp in June.
Insight: Lawson, a 2006 first-round pick, is an early down LB and not a great bet to rack up sacks in IDP leagues. (SportsBuff.com)

Description: CSN Bay Area.com reports, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, it is believed by those close to Lawson that can attract "Calvin Pace-like money" as a free agent.
Insight: Pace got a six-year, $42 million deal from the Jets from the Jets in March of 2008. Lawson is entering the final year of his contract, but it's hard to see the 49ers giving him that kind of money unless he has a huge 2010. (SportsBuff.com)

5/5/2010 2:29:00 PM
Description: According to Comcast Sports Bay Area, the 49ers have had no substantive talks with Lawson about a contract extension.
Insight: Lawson is entering the final year of his contract, and did have 67 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2009. He may have to have a big year to earn a contract extension. (SportsBuff.com)

4/21/2010 2:26:00 PM
Description: The Sacramento Bee reports Lawson skipped the 49ers' OTAs last month because he is seeking a contract extension.
Insight: Lawson is entering the final year of his contract, but will have to perform better to show the 49ers he is worthy of an extension. (SportsBuff.com)
