NFL Preseason Preview - Dallas (1-1) at Arizona (1-0)

By John McMullen, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - The Bruce Arians era in Arizona got off to a great start when the Cardinals whitewashed the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field last week.

Now, Arians will make his home debut with the Cards against another of the NFL's marquee teams, the Dallas Cowboys.

Last week in Green Bay, Arizona rode an aggressive defense and a down-field passing attack to its first preseason shutout since 2008.

Quarterback Carson Palmer, making his Arizona debut, completed 4-of-6 passes for 77 yards and hit Andre Roberts for a 38-yard TD pass to open the scoring. Backup Drew Stanton followed with an effective outing which included a second quarter TD strike to rookie free agent wide receiver Jaron Brown.

The Cardinals offense recorded four pass plays of 25-plus yards in the game and piled up 355 total yards on the night.

"If the opportunities are there we're going to try to take advantage," Palmer said when asked about all the big plays."

Arizona's defense, which held the Packers to 223 total yards, recorded three sacks and two turnovers. Rookie defensive back Tyrann Mathieu had four tackles, a sack, a pass defensed and added a 24-yard punt return.

"I'm extremely proud of him," said Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, who was also a teammate of Mathieu in college at LSU. "I can't wait to see what he's going to do to help us throughout the regular season."

The Cowboys, meanwhile, followed up their Hall of Fame Game victory over Miami by losing in Oakland last week.

The Dallas starters saw their first action of the preseason and the defense forced a turnover on the Raiders' first possession as linebacker Sean Lee registered a sack and knocked the ball loose. Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher recovered the fumble at Oakland's 16-yard line which set up a field goal.

"It was great to be out there and finally play," said Lee. "It has been a long time practicing with our team and it's nice to go against another team in live action. The only way to really get better is to get out there and play hard. We had a good start but we have to get better."

Tony Romo, who sat out the Cowboys' preseason opener as a precaution after offseason back surgery, connected on 6-of-8 passes for 88 yards. Backup Kyle Orton went a perfect 6-of-6 for 52 yards and a touchdown in the setback.

Dez Bryant led Dallas' receiving corps with three catches for 55 yards.

Despite a history that dates back to their first regular season meeting in 1960, the Cardinals and Cowboys have met just three times in the preseason with the Arizona franchise holding a perfect 3-0 mark.
