NFL Preseason Preview - Tennessee (1-2) at Minnesota (0-3)

By John McMullen, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Vikings will try to avoid a winless preseason when they take on the Tennessee Titans at Mall of America Field.

The Vikings traveled to San Francisco last week and suffered a 34-14 defeat at the hands of the 49ers. In the loss, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder struggled again, completing 17-of-23 passes for 116 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

"What we get done between now and our season opener is going to be important," said Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier. "That will probably determine what's going to happen to our football team as we go forward. How we can utilize these three weeks that we've had -- playing games -- to learn from them and put some things together as we prepare for the regular season.

"There are things we can correct. There are some corrections that have to be made. But from the things that I've seen, they are correctable so that's what encourages me."

The Titans, meanwhile, hosted the Atlanta Falcons last week and earned their first victory of the preseason, overcoming an early deficit to win by a final score of 27-16.

Quarterbacks Jake Locker and Ryan Fitzpatrick combined for three touchdown passes, and Chris Johnson accounted for 65 of the teams 171 rushing

Locker, along with the starting units on both sides of the ball, played a series into the third quarter as part of the dress rehearsal for the regular- season opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 8. The third-year signal caller was efficient, completing 11 of 13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.

Fitzpatrick played most of the second half, completing 6-of-9 passes for 76 yards, one interception and touchdown passes to Michael Preston and rookie Justin Hunter.

Tennessee's defense recorded six sacks, including five against Atlanta's first-team offense.

"Preseason or not, at least we won one that the guys played into the third quarter on both sides," said Titans head coach Mike Munchak. "So we kind of got a real feel of where we're at. It is still a lot different than the regular season. We know that. But again, you want to be ready to go out and play."

Minnesota leads its all-time preseason series against Tennessee by a 4-1 margin.
