NFL Preseason Preview - San Diego (0-1) at Chicago (0-1)

By John McMullen, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - Marc Trestman will make his Soldier Field debut as Bears head coach when Chicago hosts the San Diego Chargers in preseason action.

Trestman, a former two-time Grey Cup winner as the pilot of the CFL's Montreal Alouettes who replaced Lovie Smith in the Second City, got off to a inauspicious start last week in Charlotte when Cam Newton threw a touchdown pass on Carolina's second possession and the Panthers upended the Bears, 24-17, in the preseason opener for both teams.

There was some excitement for Bears rookie Jon Bostic, however. The linebacker, who was picked in the second round out of Florida, picked off Newton and rumbled 51 yards to the end zone.

"That's special for a guy in his first pro game," said Bears veteran linebacker Lance Briggs. "He was in position, he caught it and he got himself into the end zone."

Chicago's first offensive play, though, resulted in a turnover as Jay Cutler's pass was intercepted by Josh Norman. Cutler played the entire first quarter and finished 6-of-8 for 56 yards. Josh McCown saw action in the second quarter and Matt Blanchard ended an impressive 15-of-18 for 194 yards but also threw a pick which Norman took 60 yards to the house.

San Diego also found itself on the losing end of its preseason opener after Tarvaris Jackson tossed a pair of touchdown passes in relief of starter Russell Wilson, as the Seattle Seahawks earned a 31-10 victory over the Chargers in America's Most beautiful City.

San Diego went 7-9 last season and missed the playoffs for a third straight season, prompting the firing of Norv Turner, who had manned the San Diego sideline since 2007. In his first game action under new head coach Mike McCoy, quarterback Philip Rivers went an efficient 5-of-6 for 45 yards in just one series of work which produced a 28-yard field goal from Nick Novak.

"I think the great thing was the way we started the football game," said McCoy. "Guys were doing what they're supposed to do. It was a great way to start."

Backup Charlie Whitehurst threw a pair of interceptions in relief, while rookie Brad Sorensen completed 7-of-10 passes for 84 yards and a score. Ladarius Green hauled in San Diego's lone touchdown of the game.

On the injury front for the Chargers, rookie inside linebacker is expected to miss at least one week while recovering from a foot sprain, while wide receiver Malcom Floyd is out for multiple weeks after suffering a knee sprain during Monday's practice.

Floyd hopes to be ready in time for the regular season opener, however.

"I kind of dodged a bullet with this one," Floyd said. "We were just doing one-on-ones and I just got twisted up (with cornerback Shareece Wright) on a play and came down on my knee. It feels better than what it looked like on the field. We're just taking it day by day."

Floyd led the Chargers with a career-best 56 receptions for 814 yards and five touchdowns last season and a more serious injury would have been devastating for a Chargers team which has already lost Danario Alexander, the club's other starting receiver, for the year with an ACL tear.

The Bears and Chargers will be meeting for the seventh time in the preseason, with San Diego holding a 4-2 series edge.
