Report: Jay Gruden to become Redskins head coach

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Redskins are reportedly set to name Jay Gruden their new head coach.

Gruden met with Redskins front office personnel on Wednesday night and both NFL.com and ESPN are reporting that a deal to replace Mike Shanahan is in place.

Shanahan was fired a day after the Redskins completed a disastrous 3-13 season with eight straight losses. Washington was 24-40 under Shanahan with a surprise NFC East title in 2012.

Gruden has been the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals the past three seasons. The Bengals reached the playoffs each of those three years and were eliminated last Sunday by San Diego after winning the AFC North title.

Before joining Cincinnati in 2011, Gruden spent seven seasons as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under his brother Jon from 2002-08. He then moved on to the Florida Tuskers of the fledgling United Football League, first as offensive coordinator and then as head coach in 2010.
