Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - A Florida jury convicted 23-year-old Eric Rivera on Monday in the shooting death of former Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor during a botched robbery in 2007.
Taylor, 24, was shot in the upper leg during an attempted robbery of his Miami-area home on Nov. 27, 2007. The bullet wound damaged the femoral artery in Taylor's leg, causing significant blood loss.
Rivera, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was found guilty of second- degree murder and armed burglary with assault. He faces a possible sentence of life in prison, though the death penalty is not an option because he was a teenager at the time of the crime.
Three of the five defendants in the murder case still await trial, while a fourth previously pled guilty and accepted a 29-year sentence in exchange for his cooperation against the others if called to testify.
Taylor was in his fourth NFL season, all with the Redskins, who selected him with the fifth overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft.
