Report: Falcons' Snelling arrested
(SportsNetwork.com) - Atlanta Falcons running back Jason Snelling was arrested early Friday morning and charged with possession of marijuana after a traffic stop in which he allegedly attempted to eat some of the drug, according to a report.
The Barrow County News reported Snelling was charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of drug-related materials and several other traffic violations.
"We are aware of the situation concerning Jason Snelling and are in the process of gathering additional information," the Falcons said in a statement. "Because this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time."
Snelling didn't practice Friday. His status for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay is unclear.
According to the report, Snelling was pulled over around 3:35 a.m. after he was observed to be unable to stay in his lane. An officer for the Winder (Ga.) Police Department noticed "a strong odor of marijuana" coming from the car Snelling was driving.
Snelling told the officer he had smoked marijuana earlier in the evening and said there was a grinder -- used for breaking up marijuana -- in the console of the car that contained a small amount of the drug, according to the report.
Another officer talking to Snelling who noticed the player was repeatedly swallowing asked him to open his mouth and observed green leafy particles inside, according to the report. Snelling denied eating marijuana.
Snelling was arrested at 4:20 a.m. and transported to the Barrow County Detention Center, according to the report.
He was also charged with driving with expired or no license, failure to maintain lane, failure to maintain insurance, improper use of dealer license plate and no registration.
Snelling, 29, has rushed 36 times for 132 yards and a touchdown in eight games this season. He has 19 catches for 159 yards and two scores.
