| NOTES: |
|
Kevin Harvick will attempt to become the first back-to-back winner of
this race since Rusty Wallace ran off four straight from 1993-96, as he
defends his title this week at Martinsville Speedway.
Last season, Harvick posted his second straight Sprint Cup win, first winning
at his home track in California and then preventing Dale Earnhardt Jr an
opportunity to end his winless streak that dates back to June 2008 at Michigan.
Earnhardt Jr passed Kyle Busch for the lead with 21 laps remaining in the 500-
lap affair at the flat, half-mile Virginia track. But Harvick took over the top
position with four laps to go when Earnhardt Jr. got loose, allowing Harvick to
squeak by him. He crossed the finish line 0.7 seconds ahead of Earnhardt Jr to
become the first repeat winner in the series this season. The victory also
snapped Denny Hamlin's streak of three consecutive wins at Martinsville, as he
placed 12th.
Back in 2010, Hamlin won for the third straight time at Martinsville and fourth
time in the past six races at the Virginia track, as he captured the rain-
delayed race. Hamlin led a race-high 172 laps, but gave up the top position to
Jeff Gordon when he opted to pit for new tires during a caution with less than
10 laps remaining. The pit strategy paid off at the end.
An accident involving Kyle Busch and Paul Menard set up a green-white-
checkered finish. After the final restart, second-place runner-up Matt Kenseth
dove underneath Gordon to take the lead, but Gordon shoved Kenseth up the
track and into the wall. Hamlin moved past Ryan Newman and then darted ahead
of Gordon and Kenseth to take the lead for good with one and a half laps
remaining.
In 19 career NASCAR starts at Martinsville, Hamlin has five wins and 15 top-10
finishes. His average Sprint Cup finish is 6.462, having finished out of the
top-10 just twice in 13 starts.
With 16 laps remaining in 2009, Jimmie Johnson overtook Hamlin and held on for
his 41st career Sprint Cup title, defeating Hamlin by 0.774 of a second.
Johnson grabbed the lead for the first time on lap 430, when he beat Hamlin
off of pit road during a caution for an incident involving Jeremy Mayfield. He
held the top spot until a restart on lap 456, when Hamlin passed him after the
green flag waved. Hamlin held off Johnson for two more restarts, but the four-
time Sprint Cup Series champion drove underneath Hamlin and moved him up the
track while making the winning pass. Johnson's win total now stands at 55.
Johnson has fared well at Martinsville Speedway, winning five of the last 10e
races and had posted a top-10 finish in 17 straight at the track, until last
spring's 11th-place result. Overall, Johnson has six wins, three runner-up
finishes, two thirds and two fourth-place finishes at the Virginia oval. His
average finish in 20 trips is 5.450.
Back in 2008, Hamlin reclaimed the lead on lap 427 of the 500-lap race and
took the checkered flag in front of Jeff Gordon for his then fourth career
Sprint Cup title. Starting on the front row next to pole-sitter Gordon, Hamlin
led on three separate occasions for 82 laps, while Gordon led for 90 laps.
Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr dominated most of the race, each leading five
times, Johnson for 135 laps and Earnhardt Jr for 146 laps. The two drivers
finished fourth and sixth respectively. Hamlin's win over Gordon was by .398
of a second.
In 2006, Tony Stewart outraced Gordon to the finish line, clipping "Speed
Racer" by just over a second for his 25th career Sprint Cup title. Gordon, who
is a seven-time winner on this track, had dominated at Martinsville this past
decade, posting four wins, three seconds and three thirds since 2003. Stewart
reclaimed the lead on lap 474 of the 500-lap event to clip Gordon by 1.083
seconds. Stewart led the race on five separate occasions for a race-high 288
laps, while pole sitter Jimmie Johnson, who placed third, led four times for
195 laps.
Darrell Waltrip, an 11-time winner at Martinsville, is the all-time pole-
winner with eight poles at the Virginia track. Richard Petty had registered 15
of his 200 career wins at this track. In fact, nine of those wins were at this
race. Lee Petty holds the record for the driver that started the farthest back
and won this race, when he captured the 1959 Virginia 500 from the 24th
position.
The pole sitter has won at Martinsville 19 times in 126 races, the most recent
in this race in 2003 when Jeff Gordon took the checkered flag. Hamlin won the
fall race in 2010 from the pole. The top-10 positions have accounted for 91
wins. Opened in September 1947 by H. Clay Earles, Martinsville Speedway,
originally a dirt track, is one of the oldest continuously-operating racing
facilities in the United States. The first NASCAR Sprint Cup race was held on
Sept. 25, 1949.
Actor Gary Sinise, who stars in CSI: NY, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the
race and will command the drivers to start their engines.
The Sprint Cup Series takes its first week off during the season before
resuming its schedule on April 14 at Texas Motor Speedway. Matt Kenseth is the
defending race winner.
