| NOTES: |
|
The great Richard Petty was the last driver to accomplish the feat of
winning this race three straight years. Petty, a seven-time winner of this
race, won five consecutive seasons at Richmond from 1970-74. This is
significant, as Denny Hamlin has a chance to three-peat at RIR this weekend,
the final race before the Race for the Chase begins.
Last season, Virginia native Hamlin led 251 of 400 laps, but had to hold off
several challenges from his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch during the
final 40 laps to capture his sixth of eight wins of 2010 and the 14th of his
career. Currently 12th on the points list, Hamlin now owns 17 titles, and is
fighting for the final wild-card spot in the Chase.
Hamlin has improved his standing in this race each of the last five seasons,
culminating in victory the past two seasons. Hamlin was the dominant driver in
2009, leading a whopping 299 out of 400 laps, as he defeated Kurt Busch for win
number six.
The final two positions in the race for the Chase will be determined this
weekend. Brad Keselowski and Hamlin currently stand 11th and 12th
respectively. AJ Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle are on the outside
looking in and need some help.
In 2008, Jimmie Johnson clipped Tony Stewart by less than a second for his
37th career Sprint Cup title. Johnson started third on the grid and claimed
the lead for the first time on lap 367, a spot where he held steady through
lap 389. Stewart briefly reclaimed the advantage on lap 390, but Johnson took
control on the 392nd lap and held on for a 0.365 of a second victory.
Starting from the pole position, Johnson captured the 2007 race, as he crossed
the finish line over three seconds ahead of Stewart. Johnson led three times
for 104 laps, including the final 61, as he posted a 3.007 seconds victory.
Jeff Gordon, who placed fourth, led four times for a race-high 191 laps.
In 2006, Kevin Harvick captured the fall Richmond race, as he recorded a 0.153
of a second win over Kyle Busch. The victory was Harvick's third of the 2006
season and eighth of his "Cup" career. Harvick, who started fifth on the grid,
reclaimed the lead for the fifth and final time on the second to last lap to
register the win. Busch dominated most of the race, as he led for a race-high
248 laps.
When Johnson won this race in 2007, he became the first pole sitter to capture
the checkered flag since Davey Allison in 1988. The winner of this race will
most likely come from the top-10 starting positions on the grid. With 110
races held at RIR, 63 have been captured from the top-5, 87 from the top-10 and
22 from the pole. Only three times since 1992 has the pole sitter won here
(2005, 2007, 2010).
Originally known as the Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds, Richmond
International Raceway held its first race in 1946 as a .5-mile dirt track. The
first NASCAR Sprint Cup race was held on April 19, 1953. The spring 1964 race
was run on a Tuesday night under temporary lighting. The track name changed to
Virginia State Fairgrounds in 1967. The track surface was changed from dirt to
asphalt between races in 1968 and the name changed to Richmond Fairgrounds
Raceway in 1969. The track was re-measured to .500 miles in April 1969, then
to .542 miles in September 1969. The first race under permanent lights was
Sept. 7, 1991 and the first season with both races at night was 1999.
The 10-race "Chase for the Sprint Cup" championship begins with the September
18th GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. David Reutimann is the defending race
winner.
