Description: Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson will have a chance to earn a spot in the starting rotation this spring, according to manager Joe Maddon.
Insight: Jackson was demoted to the bullpen last season after going 6-15 with a 6.33 ERA and 1.64 WHIP, so he'll really have to impress to beat out Travis Wood or Tsuyoshi Wada for the final spot in the starting rotation.
9/23/2014 5:47:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson has been demoted to Chicago's bullpen for the remainder of 2014.
Insight: With only a week left in the season, it should not be considered a big deal, but the move is a necessary one. Jackson has a 6.38 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 139 2/3 innings this season. He will look to rebound in 2015.
7/24/2014 10:32:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson left in the sixth inning of Thursday's game with a cramp in his right hand.
Insight: Jackson wasn't pitching that well anyway, having given up seven hits and five earned runs when the trainer made a visit. He has no fantasy value the way he's throwing this season (5-10, 5.61 ERA, 1.56 WHIP entering today's game).
5/17/2014 5:37:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson struck out 11 batters and walked one over seven shutout innings Saturday against the Brewers.
Insight: Jackson has good stuff, but he's never been able to put it all together, which is why he's on his eighth team since 2003. He's now 3-3 with a 3.98 ERA. His 3.03 FIP suggests he'll improve, but fantasy owners shouldn't pay too much attention to that. He's a pitcher who has constantly underperformed his fielding-independent numbers.
6/9/2013 7:28:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson won just his second game of the season Sunday versus Pittsburgh.
Insight: Jackson is 2-8 with a 5.76 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP, even after holding the Pirates to one run on four hits in seven innings Sunday. The right-hander is a buy-low candidate, however, as he has a 3.39 FIP and a 3.58 xFIP.
Cold5/23/2013 9:05:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson allowed four runs on six hits in three innings Thursday afternoon at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Jackson is now 1-7 with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. However, his 3.66 FIP suggests he has outpitched his actual numbers. The right-hander came into his start Thursday having allowed just a 15.1 percent line-drive rate with men on base but stranded 57.8 percent of baserunners. After Thursday's game, his strand rate is down to 56.4 percent.
5/11/2013 9:19:00 PM
Description: Edwin Jackson's streak of eight starts in a row without a victory ended Saturday against Washington.
Insight: Jackson allowed two runs in 5 1/3 IP. Only three pitchers in the National League have produced a higher ERA than Jackson this season (6.02). He hasn't been a helpful fantasy contributor since 2011 (3.79 ERA in 32 games).
4/20/2013 10:31:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson allowed five runs on four hits in six innings Saturday against the Brewers, but just one of the runs was earned and Jackson walked only one batter.
Insight: The Cubs' defense made two errors in the bottom of the fifth, leading to three unearned runs, and Jackson made an error in the bottom of the sixth that led to another unearned run. Otherwise, it was the right-handers best outing of the season. He walked 10 batters in 16 1/3 innings over his first three starts, but he has 24 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings this year and is a solid buy-low candidate.
Cold4/14/2013 9:13:00 PM
Description: Cubs starter Edwin Jackson has walked 10 batters in his first 16 1/3 innings this year.
Insight: Jackson is 0-2 with a 6.06 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP, though he has struck out 20 batters and owns a 2.61 FIP.
12/20/2012 3:24:00 PM
Description: The Cubs have reportedly signed right-hander Edwin Jackson to a four-year, $52 million contract. SOURCE: Patrick Mooney, CSNChicago.com
Insight: After getting snubbed by Anibal Sanchez, Chicago was able to lock down another veteran right-hander. Jackson went 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 189 2/3 innings but he carried a 3.53 ERA into September before giving up 22 earned runs in 25 innings in the month. Jackson finally has a long-term home after pitching for seven teams in 10 years.
12/19/2012 9:48:00 PM
Description: Righthander Edwin Jackson has been talking to the Indians according to Fox's Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: The Cubs and Rangers are also interested in Jackson, who is expected to net a deal worth around $50 million for four seasons. The Padres had been involved also but they've since dropped out of the running.
9/28/2012 11:05:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson allowed eight earned on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings Friday against the Cardinals and watched his ERA rise from 3.77 to 4.13.
Insight: Jackson's ERA had been under four since April 26. He's only posted a sub-four ERA in a season twice in his career.
9/21/2012 10:35:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson turned in his best performance of September Friday with eight innings of one-run ball against the Brewers.
Insight: Jackson came in having allowed 13 earned runs in his last 15 2/3 innings. He was in line for the win Friday but Tyler Clippard blew a save and took the loss in the ninth inning.
8/30/2012 10:16:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson dominated the Cardinals over eight innings Thursday to end a two-start losing streak.
Insight: Jackson (8-9, 3.53 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) allowed just five earned on nine hits and recorded a 19/3 K/BB in 13 innings over his last two starts, but he took a loss in both of them. Thursday, he allowed one unearned run on four hits and struck out 10. This has easily been Jackson's best all-around season in the big leagues.
7/21/2012 4:58:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson got back on track Saturday against Atlanta after three straight poor starts.
Insight: Jackson (5-6, 3.73 ERA) was the tough-luck loser against Ben Sheets Saturday despite firing seven innings of one-run ball. Jackson came in having allowed 16 earned runs in his last 13 2/3 innings as his ERA rose by nearly a run.
Cold7/16/2012 11:27:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson has slipped up in his last three starts, allowing 16 earned runs on 21 hits in 13 2/3 innings. The right-hander dropped to 5-5 Monday after lasting just five innings against Miami.
Insight: Jackson had a 2.91 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP through 92 2/3 innings but he's seen those totals balloon to 3.89 and 1.16 in his last three starts.
6/11/2012 10:40:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson improved to 2-0 for the month with the win Monday night against the Blue Jays. He worked eight innings, allowing three hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out three.
Insight: Jackson might not get as much attention as Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez or Jordan Zimmerman but he's been just as productive so far in 2012. He hasn't received much run support so his win total is low (this was just his third win of the year) but Jackson's ERA is 3.02 and opponents are hitting only .202 against him.
6/6/2012 10:15:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson held the Mets to three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking four and striking out six Wednesday to earn his second victory of the season.
Insight: Jackson (2-3, 3.11 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) has been one of the worst supported pitchers in baseball this year. Wednesday was his first win since he threw a complete game on April 14 against Cincinnati.
5/29/2012 10:58:00 PM
Description: Nationals starter Edwin Jackson dropped to 1-3 on Tuesday despite holding Miami to two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Insight: Jackson hasn't received much run support this season, which explains his paltry win total despite a stellar 3.17 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 10 starts.
4/14/2012 7:08:00 PM
Description: Edwin Jackson threw a complete game two-hitter against the Reds on Saturday. Jackson gave up a run and struck out nine.
Insight: Jackson has already proven that he has no-hit stuff. The question has always been whether he can harness it for a full season. Now with his seventh team in 10 seasons, don't count on Jackson suddenly becoming a shut-down ace for 30-plus starts.
