National League Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, September 1st (All times Eastern)

San Diego Padres (62-71) at Colorado Rockies (53-77), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Edinson Volquez (9-9, 4.10) Colorado - Jhoulys Chacin (1-4, 5.55)

(Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez attempts to win a third straight start on Saturday evening when the San Diego Padres play the second contest of a three- game set against the Colorado Rockies.

Volquez seems to have put some recent struggles behind him, winning two in a row following a three-start stretch in which he went 0-2 and allowed 16 runs in just 8 2/3 innings of work.

The right-hander picked up a victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday after giving up two runs -- both in the first inning -- on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings. He evened his season record at 9-9 to go along with a 4.10 earned run average in 27 games.

Volquez, 29, has won both of his previous starts versus the Rockies this season and is 3-2 with a 3.90 ERA in six lifetime encounters.

Colorado counters with Jhoulys Chacin, who makes his third straight since sitting out nearly four months of action due to a chest injury.

In his first start since May 1, the righty beat the New York Mets with six innings of one-run ball on Aug. 21. Chacin then allowed just one run in five frames on Sunday at the Chicago Cubs, but took a 5-0 defeat.

The 24-year-old is 1-4 with a 5.55 ERA in seven starts this season and 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six career meetings with the Padres, including three starts.

San Diego took the opener of this set on Friday 5-4. Carlos Quentin hit a solo homer and drove in two runs, while Cameron Maybin had three hits and scored the winning run on a Chris Denorfia single in the eighth.

"That's what (Maybin) has to do, he's got to utilize his legs," San Diego manager Bud Black said of Maybin's hustle.

Clayton Richard won his third straight start as he gave up three runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.

San Diego has won 10 of its last 11 games, while Colorado dropped its second in a row despite Jordan Pacheco, Wilin Rosario and Andrew Brown all hitting home runs.

Alex White gave up three runs on four hits with three walks in just 3 2/3 innings of work to suffer the loss.

"Command of the strike zone was not very good," White admitted. "When I do that, I get behind and that gets me in tough situations."

San Diego is 8-5 against the Rockies this year and hasn't captured a season series against them since going 11-7 in 2005.
