National League Game Summary - San Francisco at Philadelphia

(Tuesday, July 22)

Final Score: San Francisco 9, Philadelphia 6 (14 innings)

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Crawford hit a tie-breaking, three-run double with two outs in the 14th inning to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 9-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Buster Posey tied the game with a solo home run off Philadelphia closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth and ignited a four-run 14th with a one-out double.

"One pitch," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Posey's shot. "The pitch came back over the plate. (Papelbon) had been on a good roll."

After Jeff Manship (1-2) intentionally walked Pablo Sandoval, George Kontos (3-0) dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Gregor Blanco then walked to load the bases and Crawford cleared them with a drive to left-center field.

Hector Sanchez singled home Crawford before Manship got the final out with the bags full again.

Tim Lincecum, making his second career regular-season relief appearance, allowed an inherited runner to score in the bottom of the 14th, but recorded the final two outs to earn his first career save.

"Just get outs," Lincecum said of the save. "I've been in that situation coming out of the bullpen before. I was just trying to do my best to control my emotions."

Ryan Howard twice had a chance to be a walk-off hero. However, he struck out swinging with men on the corners in the ninth and grounded out softly with two aboard in the 11th.

Howard led off the 14th with a single and advanced to third on a one-out double by pinch-hitter Wil Nieves. After Lincecum relieved Kontos, Howard scored on a Cody Asche groundout.

Cameron Rupp kept the hopes of a comeback alive by drawing a walk, but Domonic Brown grounded out to end the marathon at Citizens Bank Park at 5 hours, 46 minutes.

Posey finished with four hits and Hunter Pence also homered for the Giants, who moved into sole possession of first place in the NL West. San Francisco has won the first two installments of this four-game set and five of six overall.

Yusmeiro Petit got the starting assignment for the Giants after Matt Cain was put on the DL for the third time this season. Petit surrendered five runs on seven hits in five innings.

Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer for Philadelphia, which has dropped three straight and six of its last seven. Phillies starter Roberto Hernandez gave up three runs on five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Pence opened the game with an infield single and came around from second to score on Sandoval's two-out double to left.

Philadelphia's first three batters reached in the bottom of the first, with Chase Utley's RBI single tying the game. Rollins, who walked after Ben Revere led off with a single, hustled to third on Utley's hit and scored on a Marlon Byrd groundout.

The Giants, however, quickly tied the game in the second. After drawing a leadoff walk, Blanco swiped second and went to third when the catcher Rupp's throw wound up in center. Blanco then scored on Crawford's grounder to the right side.

Pence crushed a Hernandez offering over the center-field seats and onto Ashburn Alley in the fifth to put the visitors up 3-2, but the Phillies reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Revere got his third hit of the game and Rollins followed with a go-ahead drive to right. Howard then hit a two-out single in front of Byrd's run- producing double to deep right-center field.

Hernandez's outing was done after a walk to Crawford. Antonio Bastardo retired pinch-hitter Joaquin Arias on a fly ball to right for the final out in the sixth after giving up a single to Sanchez.

The Giants did close to within 5-4 in the seventh, and they were threatening for more. With Ehire Adrianza aboard via a one-out double, Posey hit a comebacker that deflected off reliever Ken Giles to the right side and a misplay by Utley allowed Adrianza to score. Sandoval then blooped a single to left, but Giles recovered to strike out both Michael Morse and Blanco.
