MLB Game Summary - Baltimore at Milwaukee
(Tuesday, May 27th)
Final Score: Milwaukee 7, Baltimore 6 (10 innings)
Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Milwaukee pitcher Yovani Gallardo came on as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning and delivered the game-winning double, as the Brewers rallied to a 7-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the middle installment of a three-game set on Tuesday.
With two outs and T.J. McFarland (0-1) on the hill, Baltimore opted to intentionally walk Mark Reynolds to face Gallardo, who was 0-for-4 in his career as a pinch-hitter but did have 12 homers and 41 RBI. Gallardo worked the count 2-0 before sending a drive to the wall in left-center, allowing Reynolds to score easily.
"I was just trying to get a ball that was out over the plate," Gallardo said. "I think the pitch wasn't where (McFarland) wanted it I'm pretty sure but I was able to make good contact."
Francisco Rodriguez (2-1), who blew a save with two outs in the ninth inning in Monday's 7-6 10-inning loss, pitched a scoreless top of the 10th to earn the win.
Reynolds, Khris Davis and Carlos Gomez all homered for the Brewers, who were 3-7 in their last 10 games. Matt Garza started and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings but was charged with six runs -- three earned -- on five hits.
The Brewers roughed up Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen, cranking three homers in the first four innings to claim a 5-0 lead.
"We were fortunate to start with with being down that much and being able to battle back against Garza," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said.
Jean Segura and Ryan Braun singled to open the bottom of the first, and Gomez followed with a deep no-doubter out to left-center to make it 3-0 before Chen had recorded an out.
Reynolds had a solo shot in the second inning, and Khris Davis left the park in the fourth.
Baltimore methodically carved into the deficit, starting with Nelson Cruz's solo home run in the top of the fifth. One inning later, Nick Markakis doubled in Delmon Young, and after Manny Machado moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt, Adam Jones plated Markakis with a sac fly to center.
Cruz walked to open the seventh, and an error by Segura two batters later put a pair on base. Garza got Jonathan Schoop to ground to short for the second out, but Steve Pearce stepped in as a pinch-hitter and crushed a liner over the wall in left to give his O's the lead.
Zach Britton got the nod in the ninth looking to nail down his fourth save for Baltimore. Lyle Overbay singled to start the frame and was replaced at first by Elian Herrera. Segura moved Herrera to second with a bunt, Braun's groundout put him on third and with two gone, Jonathan Lucroy chopped one softly down the third base line. Machado charged and fired to first, but his throw pulled Chris Davis off the bag, and Herrera scored to tie the game and force extras.
Garza has given up at least two runs in 10 of 11 starts this season and three or more in six straight ... Gallardo will oppose Baltimore's Bud Norris on Wednesday ... Baltimore slugger Chris Davis returned to the lineup after missing two games for the birth of his child ... Cruz's home run was his major league-leading 17th of the season.
