Frazier, Bruce power Reds past Phillies

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Todd Frazier had three hits, including a solo homer, and Jay Bruce added a two-run shot to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

The Reds had a 6-2 lead after five innings and threw runners out at home in the sixth and seventh as the Phillies attempted to mount a comeback.

They snapped a three-game losing streak that included Friday's 8-0 loss in the three-game series opener, when Reds killer Cole Hamels outdueled Johnny Cueto to stop Philadelphia's season-long six-game losing streak.

Jimmy Rollins and Marlon Byrd hit two-run homers for the Phillies in this one and Carlos Ruiz added a solo blast.

Alfredo Simon (8-3) earned his second win of the season against Philadelphia after giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks in six innings. Simon threw 7 2/3 shutout innings against the Phillies in a 3-0 win on May 16.

Roberto Hernandez (2-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in four innings.

Ruiz's leadoff homer in the sixth inning cut Philadelphia's deficit to three runs. Later, Byrd was thrown out at home plate on Domonic Brown's double to Billy Hamilton in center field, ending the inning.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg was ejected for the first time as a manager after arguing that Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco had blocked the plate before second baseman Brandon Phillips' relay throw arrived.

The play was reviewed and the call upheld.

In the seventh, after Rollins' two-run blast cut the score to 6-5, Ruiz walked and was gunned down at home trying to score on Chase Utley's double to the wall.

The relay came from Hamilton and Phillips again. Phillips' throw was wide to the third base side but Mesoraco chased it down and spun around to tag out Ruiz.

"Two perfectly executed relay throws," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "It was a big deal."

Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save.

Earlier, Hamilton scored Cincinnati's first run on Bruce's sacrifice fly in the first inning after leading off with a walk, stealing second and moving up on a groundout.

Byrd's two-run homer to left field in the second plated Ryan Howard, who led off with a single.

But Frazier led off the bottom of the second with a homer to center field, his 13th of the season, to tie the score and the Reds took the lead with two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Zack Cozart and sacrifice fly by Hamilton.

Bruce teed off for a two-run homer off reliever Ethan Martin in the fifth to make it 6-2.
