Bucs sign Volquez, Barmes to 1-year deals
Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Friday the signings of pitcher Edinson Volquez and infielder Clint Barmes to one-year deals.
Volquez, 30, spent last season with the Dodgers and Padres, going 9-12 with a 5.71 earned run average in 33 games, all but one as a starter. The nine-year pro and right-hander owns a 53-52 lifetime record and 4.75 ERA in 159 career appearances for the Rangers, Reds, San Diego and Los Angeles since 2005.
Barmes helped the Bucs earn their first playoff berth since 1992 by hitting .211 with five home runs, 15 doubles and 23 RBI over 108 games last season, his second in Pittsburgh.
The 34-year-old is heading into his 12th MLB season, carrying a .246 average, 86 homers, 189 doubles and 392 RBI over 1,040 games with Colorado, Houston and Pittsburgh.
To make room on the club's 40-man roster, the Pirates designated pitcher Ryan Reid and outfielder Jerry Sands for assignment.
