Cano among 147 players who become free agents

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Major League Baseball Players Association issued a press release Thursday announcing that 147 players have officially filed for free agency.

This year's group of free agents is headlined by New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Cano hit .314 with 41 doubles, 27 homers and 107 RBI in 160 games for the Yankees in 2013.

All 30 MLB teams would love to have Cano. The problem is that his asking price of $305 million over 10 years is enough to scare off most teams.

Shin-Soo Choo, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Nelson Cruz and Curtis Granderson are the top available outfield talents.

Choo hit .285 with 21 homers, 54 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 154 games for the Cincinnati Reds this past season.

Ellsbury batted .298 with 31 doubles, nine home runs and 53 RBI in 134 contests for Boston in 2013. The Red Sox beat St. Louis on Wednesday in Game 6 of the 2013 Fall Classic to capture their third World Series in the past 10 seasons.

Beltran hit .296 with 30 doubles, 24 homers and 84 RBI in 145 games for the Cardinals this past season.

Cruz, 33, carries the stigma of a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis performance-enhancing-drug scandal.

Granderson, 32, played just 61 games for the Yankees this year due to injuries, hitting .229 with 13 doubles, seven homers and 15 RBI.

The free agent catching pool includes Brian McCann, Carlos Ruiz, A.J. Pierzynski and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

The top free agent pitchers include Matt Garza, Ervin Santana, Hiroki Kuroda, Bartolo Colon, Dan Haren, Ubaldo Jimenez, Joe Nathan, Fernando Rodney and Grant Balfour.

The available infield talent includes first basemen Mike Napoli, Paul Konerko, Kendrys Morales and Justin Morneau; second basemen Cano and Omar Infante; shortstops Stephen Drew and Jhonny Peralta; and third basemen Juan Uribe and Michael Young.

Free agents can begin negotiations with any club starting Nov. 5 at 12:01 a.m. ET.
