Canzler, pitching help IL win Triple-A All-Star Game
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - The International League used a Russ Canzler homer and solid pitching to beat the Pacific Coast League, 3-0, at the Triple-A All-Star Game at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Canzler hit a three-run homer in the second inning for the International League, which has won this event three years in a row.
IL starter Zach McAllister tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while fanning two and walking one.
The Pacific Coast League had just three hits against nine IL pitchers.
PCL starter Brad Mills gave up the homer. He yielded three hits and also walked two and struck out one in two innings of work.
It was the first shutout in the All-Star Game since the IL won 6-0 in 2006.
The International League scored all the runs they needed in the second. Dayan Viciedo reached first on a fielding error by third baseman Jeff Baisley. Matt Hague followed with a walk two batters later. Canzler stepped to the plate with two outs and smacked the ball over the wall in right-center field to make it 3-0.
The PCL had its best chance to score in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tony Abreu struck out swinging.
Mike Zagurski and Mark Worrell closed the game out in the ninth, giving the IL an 8-6 edge in the all-time series.
