Three to go in Santa Anita Derby from Baffert barn
Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) - Trainer Bob Baffert will enter three of his Kentucky Derby hopefuls in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 6. The Hall of Fame conditioner told the track that he plans on starting Flashback, Super Ninety Nine and Power Broker.
Flashback, owned by Gary and Mary West, was second in the San Felipe Stakes at the track on March 9, finishing a half-length behind Hear the Ghost. He began the year by winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Feb. 2 less than two months after winning his debut race.
The colt has earned $207,000 in his three starts.
The Wests also own Power Broker, who has yet start this year. The chestnut colt was fifth in his most recent start on Nov. 3 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
He broke his maiden in his fourth start by capturing the FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 29. In five starts Power Broker has earned $242,600.
Super Ninety Nine comes off a disappointing fifth in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 16. He had won the Southwest Stakes there for his third overall victory.
Owned by Tanma Corp., Super Ninety Nine has banked $284,480 in six starts.
