Rachel Alexandra in stable condition

Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Former Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra remains in serious, but stable condition at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. The mare is being treated by veterinarians Dr. Bonnie Barr and Dr. Brett Woodie.

"If she wasn't as smart and as strong-willed as she is she wouldn't be progressing the way she is," said Dr. Barr.

Rachel Alexandra is recovering from abdominal surgery performed Wednesday, Feb. 13 following foaling complications. She gave birth to a 140-pound filly on Tuesday, Feb. 12 but was admitted into Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital the next day with excess fluid in her abdomen.

She underwent exploratory abdominal surgery which discovered an infection. A damaged section of her small colon was surgically repaired.

Monday morning the mare went for a short walk outside, during which time she ate a small amount of grass. According to Stonestreet Farm's website, "she remains bright with normal vital signs."
