Rachel Alexandra in serious condition, but stable

Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Rachel Alexandra, 2009 Horse of the Year, is in serious but stable condition just days after undergoing surgery. The 7- year-old mare is at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

The champion thoroughbred is recovering from abdominal surgery performed Wednesday, Feb. 13 following foaling complications. She she began receiving a very small amount of feed on Saturday along with her intravenous fluids and nutrition.

Rachel Alexandra's attending veterinarians are Dr. Bonnie Barr and Dr. Brett Woodie.

Rachel Alexandra gave birth to a 140-pound filly on Tuesday, Feb. 12 but was admitted into Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital the next day with excess fluid in her abdomen. She underwent exploratory abdominal surgery which discovered an infection. A damaged section of her small colon was surgically repaired.

The foal is being fed by a nurse mare.
