Called to Serve to answer bell for Santa Anita Handicap
Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) - Called to Serve, trained by Nick Canani, has returned to Santa Anita in advance of the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 2. The 4-year-old colt is owned by Marc Ferrell.
"He shipped great and he got in here really well Tuesday night," said Canani. "We'll train Called to Serve up to the Big 'Cap. He's going to work twice before he runs. Marc and I made a mutual decision to run him a mile and a quarter. He purchased this horse as a yearling and I think he's been wanting to run him a mile and a quarter for two years now.
"It's the right distance, the timing is perfect and we kind of mapped out a schedule for our ultimate goal, which is to get to the Breeders' Cup Classic (at Santa Anita on Nov. 2)."
Called to Serve, who has been trained by Canani over the last three starts, began his racing career at Santa Anita with a third-place finish two Decembers ago. He won for the first time in his fourth start and followed with a win at Hollywood Park.
The colt was fifth in the Swaps Stakes on July 4 and reeled off consecutive thirds in the West Virginia and Oklahoma Derbies. He finished second to Our Entourage in the Temperance Hill at Belmont Park on Oct. 21.
Called to Serve wrapped up 2012 with a pair of stakes victories in the Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct on Nov. 17 and the Broad Brush at Laurel on Dec. 31.
The colt has earned $365,430 with four wins, a second and three thirds in 11 starts.
