Race-offs no more at Kentucky Futurity

Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Forget about having race-offs anymore to determine the winner of the third leg of trotting's Triple Crown. The Kentucky Futurity will begin using elimination races and a final,

Held at The Red Mile, the Futurity will have elimination races on the same afternoon with a final to determine the champion. The prior format required a trotter to win two races to claim the title.

"Eliminating the possibility of a third race in the same afternoon has been done with the welfare of the horses in mind," explained Red Mile director George Segal. "The Breeders Crown races come directly after The Red Mile Grand Circuit this year and we recognized the need for an immediate adjustment to the Futurity format."

The 121st Kentucky Futurity will be raced on Sunday, Oct. 6.
