Two-year-old named Pacer of the Year

Freehold, NJ (Sports Network) - Captaintreacherous, this year's richest 2- year-old pacer, has been named 2012 Pacer of the Year by the U.S.Harness Writers Association. The group announced the year's top pacers on Wednesday.

Trained by Tony Alagna, Captaintreacherous finished the year with $918,253 after winning eight of 10 starts with one second and a third. For his efforts he was also voted 2-year-old Male Pacer of the Year and is the first 2-year- old in 25 years to be named Pacer of the Year.

Captaintreacherous is owned by Brittany Farms, Marvin Katz, Joe Sbrocco and White Birch Farm. Driven by Tim Tetrick, the colt won the Metro Pace and Woodrow Wilson.

"I never thought I'd see the days when 2-year-olds were going those kinds of sub-1:50 miles," said Michael Parisi of White Birch Farm which also bred Captaintreacherous. :He just kept doing it and bounced back."

The 2012 Older Male Pacer of the Year is Foiled Again, winner of the Canadian Pacing Derby, Molson Pace and Indiana Pacing Derby. Last year he was voted both Pacer of the Year and champion Older Male Pacer.

The 8-year-old gelding is trained by co-owner Ron Burke and driven by Yannick Gingras. Foiled Again won seven of 24 starts this year for $1.2 million.

Also repeating as Older Female Pacer is Anndrovette. Owned by Bamond Racing and Joseph Davino, the 5-year-old is trained by P.J. Fraley and driven by Tim Tetrick.

This year, Anndrovette captured the Roses Are Red, Breeders Crown and Overbid Paces. The mare won seven of 23 starts for $698,715.

Breeders Crown champ Heston Blue Chip is the 3-year-old Male Pacer of the Year. The colt is owned by Ken Jacobs and trained by Linda Toscano, who also conditions Trotter of the Year Chapter Seven.

Driven by Tetrick and George Brennan, Heston Blue Chip earned just over $1 million with 14 wins in 18 starts. Along with the Breeders Crown Pace, he captured the Empire Breeders Classic, Progress Pace and Matron.

The 2012 3-year-old Filly Pacer of the Year is American Jewel who also won a Breeders Crown race. The filly is trained by Jimmy Takter for Brittany Farms.

American Jewel found the winner's circle in the Fan Hanover, Lynch Memorial, Simcoe and American-National. She banked $1.16 million while winning nine of 16 starts.

Somwherovrarainbow has been voted the Dan Patch Award as this year's 2-year- old Filly of the Year. She is owned by trainer George Teague Jr., K&R Racing and Ted Gewertz. The filly was driven by Andy Miller and Montrell Teague.

Somwherovrarainbow won the Breeders Crown Pace and Matron as she earned $527,156 with seven wins in 11 starts.

The Dan Patch Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 3 in Fort Lauderdale.
