Michael's Power wins Little Brown Jug

Delaware, OH (Sports Network) - Michael's Power captured the Little Brown Jug on Thursday, taking the second leg of pacing's Triple Crown.

Michael's Power, driven by Scott Zeron, edged Sweet Lou by 1 3/4 lengths, finishing the mile in a time of 1 minute, 50 seconds.

Owned by Jeffery Snyder, Michael's Power has 13 wins in 16 starts this year. Casie Coleman, meanwhile, became the second female trainer to win the Little Brown Jug.

"I wanted to win the Little Brown Jug since I was a little kid," said Coleman. "The Little Brown Jug is just awesome. I told (Scott) to 'win.' That was his only instruction."

Zeron drove Michael's Power to a win in the first elimination heat, then guided the three-year-old to the fastest first quarter in the history of the race at 25.2 seconds to start the final.

"That first quarter scared me," said Zeron, "but it allowed us to control the race. She is such a sweetheart and easy to drive. I just can't believe I won the Little Brown Jug."

Sweet Lou won the second elimination heat.

Dynamic Youth, the winner of the first Triple Crown race -- the Cane Pace -- was ineligible for the Little Brown Jug. The Messenger Stakes, third jewel of the Triple Crown, is set for Nov. 10 at Yonkers Raceway.
