Betterthancheddar takes the wandering Cane Pace

Wilkes-Barre, PA (Sports Network) - Betterthancheddar, driven by Yannick Gingras, held off Townslight Hanover down the stretch to capture Saturday's $342,875 Cane Pace at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The colt covered the mile in 1:49 2/5.

The first race of pacing's Triple Crown, the Cane Pace was originally scheduled to be run at Tioga Downs in upstate New York. However, the track was forced on Thursday to cancel the race cards for the remainder of this week because of flooded roads.

Nine three-year-old pacers went to post with Roll With Joe the 3-5 favorite. Shadyshark Hanover was the 3-1 second choice and Betterthancheddar went off as the 4-1 third pick.

Trained by Casie Coleman, Betterthancheddar left the gate first to take the early lead on the five-eighths track. Taking over the lead was Shadyshark Hanover as the field went under the wire for the first time.

Shadyshark Hanover and driver Jim Morrill Jr. led the field up the backstretch. Roll With Joe was moving on the outside into second and drew even with Shadyshark Hanover as the field entered the stretch.

Betterthancheddar had fallen back around the final turn, but found something extra down the stretch. The colt had the lead in mid-stretch as Townslight Hanover rallied along the rail.

Betterthancheddar was able to hold on for a neck victory over Townslight Hanover with Powerful Mist finishing third and Shadyshark Hanover holding on for fourth.

Completing the order of finish was Rollwithitharry, Roll With Joe, Avenue Hanover, High Noon and Eighteen.
