Nordqvist stretches lead to 4 in Thailand
Chonburi, Thailand (SportsNetwork.com) - Anna Nordqvist fired a 5-under 67 on Saturday to stretch her lead up to four strokes at the Honda LPGA Thailand.
Nordqvist finished 54 holes on the Pattaya Old Course at Siam Country Club at 11-under-par 205. She is seeking her third career title on the LPGA Tour.
"I'm a competitor so I love to compete," said Nordqvist. "Everyone who knows me knows I hate to lose."
Defending champion Inbee Park also shot a 67 during her third round to move into a tie with Michelle Wie (69) for second place at 7-under, while Julieta Granada (71) owned sole possession of fourth at minus-6.
Yani Tseng (66), Lydia Ko (69), Cristie Kerr (68) and Lexi Thompson (69) are tied for fifth at 5-under 211.
Nordqvist entered the day with a 1-stroke lead that Gal quickly erased with a birdie at the first, but Nordqvist answered with a birdie at the second to reclaim the lead at 7-under.
Nordqvist later bogeyed the fifth to drop back to 6-under and into a tie for the lead with Granada, who birdied the third to join Gal in second before Gal bogeyed the fifth to fall to minus-5.
Gal bounced back with a birdie at the sixth to earn a share of the lead, and there would eventually be a five-way tie atop the leaderboard when Park, Matthew and Wie all reached 6-under.
Wie was the first to break from the pack with her third birdie of the day at the 10th. Park joined her at 7-under with her fourth straight birdie at the 13th.
Nordqvist, however, stuck her second shot at the par-5 10th within a foot and tapped in for an eagle to jump ahead and claim the lead for good.
"Any time you can tap an eagle you're pretty happy," said Nordqvist. "I watched the leaderboard and saw nobody was really running away ... I knew there were a couple birdies on the back nine, but the wind picked up a little bit so made it a little bit tougher."
The Swede added gains at the 12th, 15th and 18th to reach 11-under and move four clear of the field heading into the final round.
NOTES: Nordqvist recorded both of her career wins during her rookie season in 2009 ... Park, who collected six wins last year, is playing in her first event of the season ... Wie is seeking her third career LPGA title.
