Diaz-Yi routs Chen in WAPL finals

Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Lauren Diaz-Yi trounced Doris Chen in Saturday's final at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

Diaz-Yi coasted to an easy 10 & 9 victory and set the record for largest margin of victory in this championship.

"Winning this championship really means a lot to me. It's my first real big win, and for it to be a USGA title just really tops it off," Diaz-Yi said.

Chen, ranked 33rd in the women's world amateur rankings, tripped to a bogey at the par-3 second to fall 1-down. She made a mess of the fourth to fall 2-down, and it was all Diaz-Yi from there.

Diaz-Yi, ranked 228th in the women's world amateur rankings, won the sixth with a par and pushed her lead to 4-up with a birdie at the eighth at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

Chen, the 2010 U.S. Girls' Junior champ, faltered to a double bogey at the 10th, but won the 11th with a par. That was Chen's only win of the match.

Diaz-Yi won the 12th and 18th with pars to take a 6-up lead into the afternoon 18.

Once the second 18 got underway, Diaz-Yi made fast work of her opponent. She 2-putted for par on the 19th and got up and down for par on the 21st hole to extend her lead to 8-up.

Diaz-Yi saved par on the 22nd and got up and down for par on the 23rd to go 10-up. The match was over after the pair halved the next four holes.

"I was very tired and other than that, I had the wrong yardage pretty much the whole day. My swing was not working and my energy was just not there," Chen admitted. "Once my body wasn't there, it really doesn't matter how my mind works."

Jennifer Song had the biggest previous win at this championship, when she beat Kimberly Kim, 7 & 6.
