Four share lead at U.S. Mid-Am

Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - Michael Castleforte, John Rudolph, John Ehrgott and Matthew Mattare are tied atop the leaderboard after Saturday's first round of stroke play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

The quartet each posted rounds of 2-under 69.

Two courses are being used for the first two rounds of stroke-play - the Conway Farms Golf Club and the Knollwood Club.

Castleforte and Rudolph played on the Conway Farms Course Saturday, while Ehrgott and Mattare teed it up at the Knollwood Club.

Tom Hart, Corby Segal and Todd White are knotted in fifth at 1-under 70.

Castleforte began on the 10th tee Saturday and birdied the 11th hole. He bogeyed No. 17, but got the stroke back with a birdie at the par-5 closing hole.

Castleforte, 30, parred his first four on his second nine before bogeying on the fifth hole. He finished off his round with back-to-back birdies at eight and nine.

"Too many times in Mid-Am golf, it goes the other way in the end because we only play a couple tournaments a year," said Castleforte. "It was nice to take it in the right direction."

Rudolph mixed four birdies and two bogeys on Saturday.

"I hit a lot of fairways and made some good putts," said Rudolph, who is playing his first USGA Championship. "I think it's what you have to do out here to shoot a good score."

Ehrgott birdied the second hole, then parred his next 13. He bogeyed No. 15, but birdies at 16 and 18 gave him his piece of the lead.

"Between the wind and the rough, I think this course is playing brutally hard," said Ehrgott. "I was fortunate enough to draw some good breaks the couple of times that I hit it in the rough."

Mattare had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, then birdied the par-5 16th for a share of first.

Tom Hogarth, Joe April, Dan Crockett, Doug Clapp, Douglas Hanzel and Richard Berkmeyer are tied for eighth at even-par.

Defending champion Randal Lewis struggled to a 6-over 77 and is tied for 113th.
