Schlesinger leads suspended Senior Women's Am
Hershey, PA (Sports Network) - Lisa Schlesinger posted a 4-under 70 on Saturday to take the lead during the suspended first round of stroke play at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.
A nearly 3-hour weather delay set the first round back. Heavy storms and lightning hammered Hershey Country Club and, although play resumed after the stoppage, play was called Saturday evening.
Noreen Mohler is second at 1-under par, but she has yet to complete her round.
Three-time winner Diane Lang, 4-time U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Ellen Port and Sydney Wells are knotted in third place at even-par 74. Pamela Kuong, Laura Algiero and Brenda Pictor are even, but still have to finish their rounds.
Schlesinger opened with four straight pars on Saturday, then rattled off three consecutive birdies from the fifth. She dropped a shot at the par-3 eighth to make the turn at 2-under par.
Schlesinger, who was the stroke-play medalist at this event last year, birdied the par-3 12th and the par-4 14th to grab the lead.
"With six par-5s, I am drooling," said Schlesinger, who only played the par 5s in 1-under par. "I can't wait to get to the par 5s. Get it in the fairway and I have a really good chance of getting there [in two]. I made a lot of putts."
Martha Leach shot a 1-over 75 and is in the only player in the clubhouse tied for ninth.
Defending champion Terri Frohnmayer carded a 7-over 81 on Saturday.
