Weaver versus Fox in U.S. Amateur final

Cherry Hills Village, CO (Sports Network) - Michael Weaver and Steven Fox won their semifinal matches on Saturday to set up Sunday's 36-hole final of the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Weaver had little trouble with Justin Thomas on Saturday. Weaver won, 3 & 2, at Cherry Hills Country Club, then watched his Cal teammate Brandon Hagy lose 2-up to Fox.

Had Hagy prevailed, it would've been the first time in U.S. Amateur history that college teammates played each other in the final. While there is no record of college teammates in the final, Phil Mickelson defeated his high school teammate Manny Zerman in the 1990 U.S. Amateur.

Weaver did his part.

He won the first two holes with birdies, then took the fourth with a par. Another birdie at the eighth led to a Weaver win and he was 4-up by the time the match made the turn.

Weaver, who took a year off from golf last year after he changing majors, took the 10th with a birdie and was in firm command at 5-up. The pair halved 11, then Thomas made a bit of a move.

Thomas won the par-3 12th with a par and a par was enough for victory at No. 14. Thomas birdied the 15th and all of a sudden, he was 2-down with three to play and back in the match.

It didn't last long.

Weaver won the 16th with a birdie and that ended the match.

Weaver has had a magical ride to the final.

He needed three playoff holes Wednesday morning just to get into the match- play portion of the field. Weaver was 3-down on the back nine and came back to win in the second round, then needed an extra hole to advance in the round of 16.

The second match was much tighter.

Fox and Hagy halved the first four holes, then Fox took the par-5 fifth with a birdie. Hagy squared things one hole later and inched 1-up with a victory at the ninth.

Hagy remained 1-up until Fox tied it with a win at 14. The victory was the result of a par and that's all he needed to take the 15th and take the lead.

The two halved the next two holes with pars and Hagy had 40 feet at the 18th to possibly force extra holes. He ran his birdie try by the cup and conceded the hole and match to Fox.
