Staten leads Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (Sports Network) - B.J. Staten fired a 4-under 66 on Friday to take the lead at the midway point of the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open.

Staten finished 36 holes at 6-under 134 and is one stroke clear of a group of players at Dye's Valley Course.

First-round leader Doug LaBelle II managed an even-par 70 and is tied for second with Ron Whittaker (66), James Nitties (66), Patrick Cantlay (67) and Glen Day (66). The group came in at 5-under par.

Thursday's action was suspended due to darkness and the first round was completed on Friday. The second round finished on time.

This is the last full-field event before next week's Web.com Tour Championship at TPC Craig Ranch. That event is reserved for the top-60 players on the money list.

Staten is 69th on the money list and a good finish this week could solidify a spot in next week's field.

"It's just another opportunity to bear down and get after it and see if you can win a golf tournament," he said. "Let the chips fall where they may and if that puts me in the top-60 come Sunday afternoon, we'll get on a plane and go."

Staten started on the 10th tee Friday and bogeyed the par-3 11th. He got the stroke back with a birdie at the very next hole. Staten went birdie-bogey- birdie from the 15th to make the turn at 3-under par for the championship.

Staten began his second nine well with a birdie at the par-5 first. He added birdies at Nos. 4 and 7 to take sole possession of the lead in search of his first Web.com Tour victory.

Robert Streb (66), Russell Henley (70), Ben Martin (69), Andy Winings (69), Kevin Foley (69) and Blayne Barber (69) are knotted in seventh place at 4- under 136.
