Second round pick fantasy values

Jimmy Clausen is the most "NFL ready" quarterback in the draft.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Friday saw the NFL Draft continue into Day Two with teams selecting a couple of round worth of potential stars. Like the first round, most of the drafted athletes were on the defensive side of the ball or offensive lineman. Out of the 32 picks, just eight selections were offensive skill players (QB-1, RB-3, WR-3, TE-1). Round three saw 10 more possible fantasy players picked.

Below we will look at the second-round selections to see if any will be "fantasy-worthy" in 2010.

Dexter McCluster, Kansas City - McCluster is a smallish running back (5'8", 165 lbs) in the "Percy Harvin mold." McCluster ran for 1,169 yards and caught 44 balls for 520 yards last season at Mississippi. With both Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones in front of him, he's likely to see as much time split out as a receiver and on special teams as in the Chiefs backfield. He's got aearly ADP of around 140 - a 12th-round selection.

Arrelious Benn, Tampa Bay - Benn had a great 2008 season at Illinois (67-1,055-3), but was not as impressive last season partially due to the team's problems at quarterback. He has the size, route running ability and hands to succeed in the NFL and should get an opportunity to play right away for the "receiver-challenged" Buccaneers.

Rob Gronkowski, New England - When your quarterback is Tom Brady, you have a chance to get into the endzone even if you are the team's third or fourth option on a play. With Randy Moss and Wes Welker getting most of the receptions, Gronkowski won't get a lot of touches, but they could be for touchdowns. Former Pats' tight end Ben Watson had 20 touchdowns over the last five seasons with Brady. Lowering Gronkowski's fantasy value is the fact that the Patriots drafted another tight end, Florida's Aaron Hernandez, in the fourth round.

Jimmy Clausen, Carolina - Clausen is the most "NFL ready" quarterback in the draft after spending his college career under Charlie Weis in a pro-style set. There is some concern about his recent toe surgery, but in Carolina he might get a chance to play if Matt Moore doesn't come out of the box quickly. Fantasy owners don't have much confidence in Moore's fantasy value as he's going around the 13th round, so it's possible that Clausen could have some second-half fantasy value in 2010.

Toby Gerhart, Minnesota - Stuck behind "All Day" Adrian Peterson and even some sets with Harvin in the backfield, Gerhart probably won't have as much value as Chester Taylor had last season. Taylor had an ADP of 102 while Gerhart is starting out in the 150 ADP-range.

Ben Tate, Houston - The confusing Texans backfield has added another option in Ben Tate from Auburn. Tate ran for 1,362 yards and 10 TDs last season, but joins Arian Foster, Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats and Chris Henry in the crowded Texans backfield. Foster ran well in the final two weeks of the season, but truthfully, it's anybody's position.

Montario Hardesty, Cleveland - Hardesty will struggle to get on the field with Jerome Harrison (ADP 53) and James Davis (ADP 143) vying for playing time in front of him. Harrison ran for 561 yards over the season's final three weeks and should be the starter.

Golden Tate, Seattle - The Seahawks selected Tate with the 60th pick and he'll have to beat out veteran Deion Branch and second-year player Deon Butler for playing time opposite T.J. Houshmandzadeh. His early ADP is 148, a 13th round selection, is ahead of both Branch and Butler.
