Week 7 - A fantasy owner's QB nightmare

Peyton Manning's quarterback rating, 80.0, is the lowest since he came into the league.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - I'd like you to look at the Weekly QB Leaders link for Week 7. Look at the top-10 names...then look again.

The Week 7 leaders by yards passing were: Jeff Garcia, Gus Frerotte, Chad Pennington, Kyle Orton, Matt Schaub, Dan Orlovsky, Trent Edwards, J.T. O'Sullivan, Brad Johnson and Joe Flacco. Each threw at least one touchdown pass.

Were any of these guys on your radar screen on Draft Day? Ok...maybe Schaub or Edwards was drafted, but certainly neither was supposed to be your starter - just a quality backup.

Yet here we are almost halfway through the 2008 NFL season and that's what the top-10 looks like. Where are all the big name, high dollar, top draft choices?

We know where Tom Brady was - rehabbing from a second knee surgery. And Tony Romo was in uniform but wasn't healthy enough to play. Nor was Carson Palmer. They had legitimate excuses.

But what about Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Marc Bulger, Jay Cutler, Eli Manning or the ultimate 2008 bust - Derek Anderson.

Anderson teased every one of his fantasy owners eight days ago with a great performance against the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants on Monday Night Football (310 yards, two TDs).

But he and his entire Cleveland offense reverted back to their "normal" 2008 performance levels this week. Anderson threw for 136 yards on 14-for-37 passing in a 14-11 loss to the Washington Redskins. His game against the Giants was the only time this season in which he has passed for more than 170 yards.

Unfortunately, he has no trade value, because even if another owner were interested, that owner would have to worry about Anderson being benched for Brady Quinn. So your only option is to sit him and pray he returns to last year's form.

For the other "star" quarterbacks, let's hope it was just a one-week dip in performance. I certainly have no complaints with Brees, who had his first bad outing after carrying my team for the first six weeks.

However, I am a little concerned with Manning, the Manning who was always an automatic play - Peyton. His quarterback rating, 80.0, is the lowest since he came into the league and ranks him 21st - behind the likes of Matt Cassel (86.8) and rookie Matt Ryan (82.9).

I excused his first couple of weeks due to rust from lack of preseason practice, but it's already Week 7. Manning has just eight TD passes versus seven interceptions. With games at Tennessee, New England and at Pittsburgh coming up, I am thinking that I will have to make Manning a "healthy scratch" something I never thought was possible.

Please wake me up from this nightmare - this can't be happening.
