Chad Ochocinco's performance Thursday night made me take a look back.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
In honor of Chad Ochocinco's extra-point prowess, I have decided to look back over the NFL's entire history to come up with my top multi-position players (ie; players who kicked as well as played a skill position).
Oh, if only I could draft one of these guys for my fantasy roster, the championship would be mine!
George Blanda, Houston Oilers - Blanda started the year slowly, passing for less than 200 yards in two of the team's first four games. But as the team strung together nine consecutive wins to finish the season, Blanda started hitting his targets. Over the final nine games he cracked 300 yards four times including a 464-yard, four TD game and a stunning 418-yard, seven TD game against the New York Titans. Blanda would have totaled 452 points by today's fantasy rules in 14 games = 32.28 points-per-game!!! In Brady's record-setting 2007 season, he averaged just 26.56 ppg.
Paul Hornung, Green Bay Packers - Can you imagine 15 rushing/receiving touchdowns, two touchdown passes AND 41 extra points and 15 field goals as Hornung produced in 1960? Whether you started him at running back, or kicker, your advantage over the opposition would be gigantic. He totaled 176 points in a 12-game schedule to win the 1960 scoring title, but would have scored 272 fantasy points or 22.66 ppg. Drew Brees led the NFL last year averaging 20.94 ppg.
Don Hutson, Green Bay Packers - Hutson was the first of the great receivers, the forerunner to Lance Alworth, Fred Biletnikoff and Jerry Rice. And he kicked extra points too. In the 1942 season, Hutson had two 200-yard games and four 100-yard games en route to the first 1,000-yard receiving season in NFL history. His 269 fantasy points in an 11-game schedule works out to 24.45 ppg.
Gino Cappelletti, Boston Patriots- Cappelletti was a solid receiver for the era and likely the best kicker of the four two-position players here. His total of 249 fantasy points in 14 games (17.78 ppg) would put him alongside Calvin Johnson last season.
Multi-Position Players and their best "fantasy" season
