Insight: The 20-year-old missed time due to a concussion last season and finished with nine goals and 17 points in 36 games. He had 22 goals and 52 points over 82 games as a rookie and has great upside playing on the Avs top line with Paul Stastny and Alex Tanguay.
P.A. Parenteau, LW10/5/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: P.A. Parenteau led the Avalanche with two goals Friday night against the Predators.
Insight: Parenteau is picking up right where he left off last season. Had 2013 been an 82-game season, Parenteau would have been on pace for over 30 goals and 40 assists. As long as he stays healthy this year, Parenteau should set career-highs in almost every scoring category.
Gabriel Landeskog, LW10/4/2013 3:17:00 PM
Description: Avalanche winger Gabriel Landeskog is out for Friday's game against Nashville with leg injury, according to a Denver Post report.
Insight: The 20-year-old missed time due to a concussion last season and finished with nine goals and 17 points in 36 games. He had 22 goals and 52 points over 82 games as a rookie and has great upside.
Gabriel Landeskog, LW10/4/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: Avalanche winger Gabriel Landeskog is questionable for Friday's game against Nashville with aleg injury.
Insight: The 20-year-old missed time due to a concussion last season and finished with nine goals and 17 points in 36 games. He had 22 goals and 52 points over 82 games as a rookie and has great upside.
Alex Tanguay, LW10/3/2013 9:31:00 AM
Description: Alex Tanguay's return to Colorado on Wednesday night was a success. The veteran left wing produced three assists in a 6-1 victory over the Ducks.
Insight: Two of his three helpers came on the power play. Tanguay seemed content to play the role of point guard as he didn't attempt a shot in his almost 14 minutes of action. Perhaps he'll take on more of a scorer's mentality Friday night against the Predators.
Jamie McGinn, LW10/3/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Avalanche left wing Jamie McGinn knocked in two goals Wednesday in a rout of Anaheim.
Insight: McGinn was a remarkably efficient 2-for-2 on shot attempts. If Wednesday was any indication, the 25-year-old should be poised for a breakout season.
Ryan Wilson, D10/2/2013 10:52:00 AM
Description: Colorado defenseman Ryan Wilson will start the season on injured reserve with a knee problem.
Insight: Coach Patrick Roy said he hopes to have Wilson back by mid-October. Not a goal scorer, Wilson accumulated just three points last season in 12 games. He managed to post 21 points in 2011-12 with a +11 rating, so has some upside if he can get healthy.
Gabriel Landeskog, LW8/15/2013 3:19:00 PM
Description: The Avalanche have signed captain Gabriel Landeskog to a seven-year extension through 2020-21.
Insight: The 20-year-old missed time due to a concussion last season and finished with nine goals and 17 points in 36 games. He had 22 goals and 52 points over 82 games as a rookie.
Ryan O'Reilly, C8/11/2013 4:25:00 PM
Description: Colorado's Ryan O'Reilly will move from center to left wing this season. "I'm excited about it," O'Reilly said, according to the Denver Post. "I'm looking at it as a good new challenge for me. I mean, I'll be playing with two great players. I've played on the wing before, with Canada in the World Championships so I'm not totally unfamiliar with it."
Insight: The Avs are loaded at center with Matt Duchene, Paul Stastny and 2013 No. 1 overall pick Nathan MacKinnon. After sitting out the first six weeks last season due to a contract dispute, O'Reilly produced six goals and 20 points in 29 games. As the top-line left winger with Duchene and P.A. Parenteau as his linemates, O'Reilly should be able to at least match his 2011-12 production of 18 goals, 55 points and 189 shots in 81 games.
Matt Duchene, C7/18/2013 5:56:00 PM
Description: The Avalanche have signed Matt Duchene to a five-year contract extension that will pay him an average of $6 million per season.
Insight: The 22-year-old Duchene is one of several young and talented forwards the Avalanche have on the roster. However, Ryan O'Reilly, Paul Stastny, Duchene and 2013 No. 1 overall pick Nathan MacKinnon all play center, so it's unclear how Colorado's lines will look in 2013-14. Duchene is coming off a breakout year in which he posted 17 goals and 43 points in 47 games.
Nathan MacKinnon, C7/9/2013 8:24:00 PM
Description: The Avalanche have signed 2013 No. 1 overall pick Nathan MacKinnon to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Insight: MacKinnon, who is still just 17 years old, produced 75 points in 44 games this past season for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Colorado already has talented young forwards Ryan O'Reilly (22 years old), Paul Stastny (27), Gabriel Landeskog (20) and Matt Duchene (22) and veteran P.A. Parenteau on the top lines, so MacKinnon isn't guaranteed a spot that is conducive to fantasy success right away.
Nathan MacKinnon, C6/30/2013 8:20:00 PM
Description: The Avalanche selected center Nathan MacKinnon with the first pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.
Insight: The 17-year-old from Canada produced 75 points in 44 games this past season for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. We won't know quite what to expect from MacKinnon until we see him in uniform but he's already being compared to fellow Nova Scotian Sidney Crosby.
