Carolina Hurricanes Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Alexander Semin, RW10/31/2014 4:40:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Alexander Semin will most likely be a healthy scratch on Saturday.
Insight: He has been an inconsistent player throughout his career, and head coach Bill Peters stated that Semin "isn't playing with the pace the league is at." That is a pretty big shot given, but it is warranted, as Semin has only two points, and is -7 through eight games. Carolina is paying him $7 million annually through the 2017-18 season.
Jiri Tlusty, C10/29/2014 10:53:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jiri Tlusty continues to be productive despite his horrible team.
Insight: Tlusty scored his fifth goal of the season on Tuesday. He has seven points this season, but he is minus-three, mostly due to the fact his team has yet to win a game. Carolina is 0-6-2.
Eric Staal, C10/28/2014 5:01:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal has been activated off the injured reserve list.
Insight: Staal has missed the last five games. Carolina needs him back desperately as the team has yet to win a game this season.
Eric Staal, C10/27/2014 6:39:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal has called himself ready to play.
Insight: He said he would play against the Canucks on Tuesday. Staal had a goal and an assist in two games before going out with an upper-body injury.
Anton Khudobin, G10/25/2014 11:12:00 AM
Description: Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin is still looking for his first victory this season.
Insight: Khudobin stopped 23 shots on Friday and allowed five goals against the Oilers. Khudobin is 0-3-1 with a 3.24 GAA and .891 save percentage.
Riley Nash, C10/25/2014 11:09:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes center Riley Nash scored in the second period to tie Friday's game against the Oilers at one.
Insight: The goal was Nash's second of the season. Both teams scored one more time in the second period, so the game was tied, 2-2, but Edmonton scored four goals in the third period to win, 6-3.
Jiri Tlusty, C10/21/2014 10:41:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jiri Tlusty scored his fourth goal of the season in Tuesday's loss to Winnipeg.
Insight: If owners need a goal-scoring option, Tlusty may be on waivers. Now would be a good time to make a move for him.
Anton Khudobin, G10/16/2014 10:02:00 PM
Description: Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin played well in a shootout loss to the Rangers.
Insight: He gave up only one goal on 34 shots, and is making a case for more playing time. Him and Cam Ward are essentially playing every other game, however starts like this one could help Khudobin separate himself.
Andrej Sekera, D10/16/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera suffered an upper body injury in Tuesday's game against the Sabres and won't play Thursday.
Insight: Sekera tripped over his own goalie's stick, trying to prevent Buffalo's first score. Consider him day-to-day. He has two assists in three games after scoring 44 points last season, the best of his career.
Jordan Staal, C10/16/2014 2:51:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes center Jordan Staal (broken right fibula) has a 3-4 month timetable for his return.
Insight: He's no Eric Staal, but fantasy owners will miss his 40-50 points a season.
Jeff Skinner, LW10/16/2014 2:48:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner will miss Thursday's game, but should be ready for next Tuesday.
Insight: Coach Bill Peters said Skinner is "real close" to returning. He scored 33 goals and added 21 assists in 71 games last season.
Jeff Skinner, LW10/15/2014 2:20:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner skated at practice on Wednesday according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
Insight: Coach Bill Peters said Skinner is "real close" to returning. He could be ready as early as Thursday against the Rangers.
Chris Terry, LW10/14/2014 10:52:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes left winger Chris Terry scored a goal and added an assist as Carolina lost to Buffalo in a shootout, 4-3.
Insight: Terry scored his second goal of the season on a wrist shot in the third period. That was his only shot on net, and he was plus-two. Terry also scored Carolina's only shooutout goal in eight rounds as Buffalo finally ended the tie on Zemgus Girgensons' score.
Andrej Sekera, D10/14/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera suffered an upper body injury in Tuesday's game against the Sabres and will not return according to the News Observer.
Insight: Sekera tripped over his own goalie's stick, trying to prevent Buffalo's first score. Consider him day-to-day.
Alexander Semin, RW10/11/2014 10:42:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Alexander Semin posted his first two points of the season assisting on two of Jiri Tlusty's three goals.
Insight: Semin used to be a 75-80 point a season guy in Washington and posted 44 points in 44 games back in 2012 for Carolina so we know he can still do it. The real question is can he stay healthy.
Jiri Tlusty, C10/11/2014 10:38:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jiri Tlusty was a busy guy Saturday night taking five shots and scoring on three of them.
Insight: Tlusty has been a solid player the last few seasons, but his 30-38 point totals haven't excited fantasy owners. Let's see if he can continue to play at this level going forward.
Cam Ward, G10/10/2014 9:55:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward allowed five goals on 26 shots on opening night against the Islanders.
Insight: Ward is battling Anton Khudobin for minutes between the pipes and this performance does not bode well for Ward staying in front of Khudobin on the depth chart. The Hurricanes and Islanders play again on Long Island Saturday, so expect Khudobin to start.
Eric Staal, C10/10/2014 9:46:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal scored a garbage-time goal on opening night against the Islanders.
Insight: Carolina trailed New York at one point, 5-1, but Chris Terry and Staal scored with under six minutes to go in the third period to cut the deficit in half. The Hurricanes would get no closer. Staal had the goal, three shots on net and was minus-one.
Andrej Sekera, D10/10/2014 9:41:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera had two assists on opening night against the Islanders.
Insight: Sekera had two shots on goal as well. He had the second helper on Nathan Gerbe's power play goal to get Carolina on the board and the primary assist on Chris Terry's slap shot goal at the 14:20 mark of the third period. New York won, however, 5-3.
Cam Ward, G10/9/2014 6:01:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward will start the team's opening game on Friday.
Insight: Carolina will take on the New York Islanders in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday. Expect Anton Khudobin to start on Saturday.
Jeff Skinner, LW10/7/2014 11:43:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner will likely miss the start of the season after being diagnosed with a concussion, according to the team's site.
Insight: Skinner has a history in this area, so the team will likely be cautious. He had a career-high 33 goals last year as a second liner.
Elias Lindholm, C9/25/2014 11:11:00 AM
Description: 19-year-old Elias Lindholm has moved to center to fill the void left by the injured Jordan Staal.
Insight: New coach Bill Peters was already moving his forwards around, trying out several different combinations and the injury to Staal will only further cause Peters to move players into different positions. He tested Lindholm out on a line with Jeff Skinner and Jiri Tlusty. That would be a good line for Lindholm, but even if he doesn't play with those guys, he shoud see an increase of production in his second year.
Jordan Staal, C9/25/2014 11:05:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis announced that center Jordan Staal suffered a broken bone in the lower part of his right left during Tuesday's preseason game against Buffalo according to NHL.com.
Insight: Staal was traveling back to Raleigh to undergo further tests. We do not yet know the extent of the injury. Regardless, this is terrible news.
Justin Faulk, D9/23/2014 8:33:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes coach Bill Peters may be juggling his offensive lines, but he has the perfect top defensive line in Justin Faulk and Andrej Sekera.
Insight: Faulk and Sekera compliment each other extremely well both offensively and defensively. Sekera will likely lead the duo in goals and points, but Faulk should be on your fantasy radar as well. We project him to get around 35 points.
Andrej Sekera, D9/23/2014 8:28:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera was a huge bright spot for Carolina last season.
Insight: In his first season in Carolina, Sekera nearly scored more goals than he had in his previous four seasons in Buffalo. He had 11 goals, 44 points and managed a plus-4 on a team that really struggled on defense. Paired with Justin Faulk once again, Sekera can prove that those numbers were no fluke.
Jiri Tlusty, C9/23/2014 8:22:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jiri Tlusty may not play on the top line this season.
Insight: Everything is up in the air in Carolina due to the new head coach in Bill Peters. Tlusty has been a solid fantasy player the last few seasons, but he is heavily reliant on playing with Eric Staal and Alexander Semin. If that does not happen, he could be moved to the third line, where fantasy hockey players go to die.
Alexander Semin, RW9/23/2014 8:18:00 PM
Description: It is hard to know what to expect from Hurricanes winger Alexander Semin this season.
Insight: Semin scored 44 points in the same number of games in his first season with Carolina, but scored just 42 points in 65 games last season. There is a good chance that a concussion in December of 2013 severely slowed his production. New head coach Bill Peters has jumbled the lines in preseason, so there is no guarantee that Semin again plays on the top line. If he is on the top line, Semin is a solid mid-round pick otherwise, there is some risk involved.
Jordan Staal, C9/23/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes new coach Bill Peters is considering playing the Staal brothers on the same line according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
Insight: Peters also had Eric Staal playing alongside Jeff Skinner and second-year player Elias Lindholm, so obviously Peters is thinking of every possible combination. If the Staal brothers do play together, that will provide a huge boost for Jordan's fantasy value. In all likelihood, Eric will play with Skinner or his mates from last season, Jiri Tlusty and Alexander Semin.
Elias Lindholm, C9/23/2014 8:05:00 PM
Description: The Hurricanes are looking for Elias Lindholm to make major strides in his second season in the league.
Insight: The 19-year-old scored nine goals and 12 assists as a rookie last season. Captain Eric Staal said he thinks Lindholm improved as the season went along. With new head coach Bill Peters, it is possible Lindholm sees some time on the top line with Staal. That would make him a tremendous steal late in drafts.
Jeff Skinner, LW9/23/2014 8:01:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner will threaten to score 30 goals again this season.
Insight: Skinner had a career-high 33 goals last year as a second liner. At the start of training camp, he was playing alongside top centerman Eric Staal. If he stays on the top line, the expectations for Skinner rise dramatically.
Eric Staal, C9/23/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal started training camp at center in between wingers Jeff Skinner and Elias Lindholm according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
Insight: Carolina coach Bill Peters said do not read into the early season combinations, but fantasy owners like what they see so far. Skinner could again lead Carolina in goals and Lindholm has tremendous potential, being the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft. Expect Staal to lead the team with around 65 points.
Alexander Semin, RW8/21/2014 1:35:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes GM Ron Francis told CarolinaHurricanes.com that he expects forward Alexander Semin to be ready when training camp begins.
Insight: "He's training, according to his agent, a couple times a day and doing therapy on the wrist as well. There were no issues with the wrist, as far as I was told," Francis said. A report surfaced about a week-and-a-half ago that Semin hadn't fully recovered yet from off-season surgery to his wrist, which had been nagging him since the beginning of last year. Francis expects that to be a thing of the past.
Eric Staal, C7/30/2014 5:39:00 PM
Description: Carolina center Eric Staal suffered a core muscle injury while training and needed to undergo surgery, according to hurricanes.nhl.com.
Insight: GM Ron Francis said Staal should be ready for training camp. The 29-year-old had just 21 goals, 40 assists and 230 SOG over 79 games in 2013-14 after generating 18 goals, 35 assists and 152 SOG in 48 games during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.
Alexander Semin, RW4/14/2014 7:59:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin will undergo wrist surgery, according to nhl.com.
Insight: Semin (22 G, 20 A) missed the final two games due to the injury. The 30-year-old had two fewer points in 65 games this season than he had in 44 games in 2012-13.
Eric Staal, C4/13/2014 10:53:00 PM
Description: Carolina center Eric Staal ended a disappointing season on a high note with two goals Sunday at Philadelphia.
Insight: It was Staal's first multi-goal game since Jan. 27. The center had 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists) in 79 games this season, his least for a non-lockout season since his rookie year in 2003-04.
Jeff Skinner, LW4/13/2014 10:52:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner's two goals on Sunday gave him a career-high 33.
Insight: The 21-year-old Skinner had 31 goals as a rookie in 2010-11 and came into Sunday's finale with 31. He'll finish with 54 points and 274 SOG in 71 contests.

Description: Carolina center Jiri Tlusty has scored a goal in two straight games since he returned from an upper-body injury.

Description: Hurricanes left wing Nathan Gerbe (undisclosed) is back in the lineup Friday, according to Brian Hedger of nhl.com.

Alexander Semin, RW4/11/2014 7:30:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin (undisclosed) will miss the final two games of the season, according to Mike Maniscalco of wralsportsfan.com.
Insight: Semin (22 G, 20 A) has two fewer points in 65 games this season than he had in 44 games last season. No word on what's keeping him out.
Andrej Sekera, D4/11/2014 5:11:00 PM
Description: Carolina defenseman Andrej Sekera (lower body) will sit out again Friday, according to nhl.com.

He managed 18 goals and 53 points in 48 games last season and had at least 70 points in seven consecutive seasons before that. With 11 games remaining, Staal will need an extraordinary finish to reach 70 this season.

Insight: Tlusty missed two straight games. His numbers are down significantly from last season, when he had 23 goals and 38 points in 48 games. He has 12 goals and 22 points in 60 contests this season. The 'Canes play at Winnipeg on Saturday and Tlusty should be in the lineup again.

Insight: Faulk (3 G, 21 A) returned from an upper-body injury that kept him out for two weeks on Saturday and had played the last two games, before illness struck. He's a decent blueliner, though a -3 rating hurts his value.

Jeff Skinner, LWHot3/13/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner was extremely active Thursday against Buffalo, accounting for 13 shots on goal and one goal.
Insight: The streaky scorer has provided fantasy owners with a point in four straight games (three goals) as well as 26 SOG in that span. The 21-year-old has 26 goals, 18 assists and a career-high 224 SOG in 55 games.
Alexander Semin, RWHot3/13/2014 9:48:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes right wing Alexander Semin extended his points streak to six games with a goal and an assist Thursday against the Sabres.
Insight: Team Russia's disappointing finish in the Sochi Olympics apparently lit a fire under Semin, who has recorded nine points (four goals) in eight games since the NHL resumed its schedule. He has raised his points total to 38 in 53 games.
Justin Faulk, D3/13/2014 1:26:00 PM
Description: Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk (upper body) is questionable for Thursday's game against Buffalo.

John-Michael Liles, D3/13/2014 1:25:00 PM
Description: Carolina defenseman John-Michael Liles missed Tuesday's game due to an upper body injury and is doubtful for Thursday's game against Buffalo.
Insight: He's totaled just four points and six PIM in 28 games this season. Liles had many good fantasy seasons with Colorado from 2003-2011 posting 30 or more points in seven straight seasons, but he's been a non-factor in Toronto and Carolina.
Jiri Tlusty, C3/11/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Carolina center Jiri Tlusty had a goal and an assist Tuesday against the Rangers.
Insight: Tlusty had 23 goals and 38 points in 48 games last season but that turned out to be an aberration. He has just 11 goals and 21 points in 57 games this season and zero 40-point years in his seven NHL seasons.

Insight: Staal had just one point in eight games from Oct. 25 to Nov. 12, but he appears to be back on track. It was only a matter of time, as he has been taking his usual three-plus SOG per game but scoring at a lowly .049 clip prior to hitting on two of his four shots over the last two games.
Nathan Gerbe, LW11/12/2013 10:09:00 PM
Description: Nathan Gerbe assisted on both of Carolina's goals Tuesday against the Avalanche.
Insight: He saw just over 18 minutes of ice time in the victory. Gerbe had been in a five-game scoring drought prior to tonight's game.
Patrick Dwyer, RW11/12/2013 10:05:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes right wing Patrick Dwyer had a strong game Tuesday versus Colorado.
Insight: He chipped in with a goal and an assist. Tuesday snapped a 12-game scoreless streak for the veteran. We don't anticipate Dwyer being much of a factor in fantasy this season.
Jordan Staal, C11/12/2013 10:01:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes center Jordan Staal helped out with a goal and an assist Tuesday in a win over the Avalanche.
Insight: Staal has had a pretty lackluster season up to this point. His goal Tuesday was just his third of the season. He'll try to add to that total when the Canes host Anaheim on Friday night.
Justin Peters, GHot11/12/2013 9:45:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes goalie Justin Peters had another fantastic start Tuesday against Colorado, blocking 33 of the 34 shots he saw in a 2-1 win.
Insight: Peters has allowed just four goals while going 3-1 with a .965 SV% over his last four starts. The Raleigh News & Observer reported Tuesday that Cam Ward (lower body) could be ready to serve as the backup goalie as soon as this weekend, but the team doesn't need to rush him back with the way Peters is playing.
Kevin Westgarth, RW11/12/2013 1:40:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes right wing Kevin Westgarth is questionable for Tuesday's game against Colorado due to an upper body injury.
Insight: He has already missed a five games. He's also scoreless in six games this season, so fantasy owners should ignore him.
Justin Peters, GHot11/7/2013 9:31:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes goalie Justin Peters kicked aside all 21 shots the Islanders sent at him Thursday in a 1-0 win.
Insight: It was the third career shutout for the 27-year-old Peters, who has won two straight starts while giving up one goal in 122 minutes during that span. He'll try to continue his hot streak Saturday against Minnesota.
Jeff Skinner, C11/7/2013 5:35:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner (upper body) will miss a "couple" more weeks, according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer.
Insight: Skinner, who has nine points in 10 games this season, has been out since Oct. 24 with an upper-body injury that is believed to be a hand issue.
Cam Ward, G11/7/2013 11:48:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward (injured reserve with a lower body injury) has not yet begun to skate.
Insight: It's looking like he'll be coming back more toward the upper end of the 3-4 week estimate. Justin Peters (1-5. 3.05 GAA, .902 SV%) hasn't done much with his opportunity.
Jeff Skinner, C11/7/2013 11:44:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner (upper body) went to get a second opinion this week.
Insight: Skinner has nine points in 10 games and has been a force this season. You don't usually get second opinions if everything is progressing as scheduled. He's already missed five games this season.
Brett Bellemore, D11/5/2013 1:48:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Brett Bellemore will miss Thursday's game against Nashville due to a stiff neck.
Insight: Bellemore has a goal and an assist in 24 games this season. He's not on the fantasy radar.
Kevin Westgarth, RW11/5/2013 12:25:00 PM
Description: Hurricanes right wing Kevin Westgarth is doubtful for Tuesday's game against Philadelphia due to an upper body injury.
Insight: He has already missed a pair of games. He's also scoreless in six games this season, so fantasy owners should ignore him.
Tim Gleason, D11/5/2013 12:23:00 PM
Description: Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason is still on injured reserve while dealing with an upper-body injury.
Insight: Gleason hasn't much of a scorer over his career, is scoreless in three games this season, hasn't posted more than 20 points in a season since 2005. He has little fantasy value even when healthy.
Eric Staal, CCold11/3/2013 10:54:00 AM
Description: Carolina center Eric Staal has produced a point in four straight games and is -10 for the season.
Insight: The center is still taking plenty of shots, getting off 4.0 SOG per game during his scoring drought. He has three goals, eight points, 18 PIM and 49 SOG in 14 games this season. He's an obvious buy-low candidate but also shouldn't be started until he starts producing.
Radek Dvorak, RW11/1/2013 10:49:00 AM
Description: Carolina winger Radek Dvorak was placed on the injured list with a lower-body injury.
Insight: Dvorak is usually good for about 20-25 points over a full season, but fantasy owners need more than that from their wingers.
Brett Bellemore, D11/1/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Brett Bellemore is expected to be activated from injured reserve for Friday's game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Bellemore practiced Wednesday. With no points in nine games, however, this shouldn't change any fantasy rosters.
