Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward played well in the final game this season, stopped 27-of-28 shots.
Insight: But as usual, Ward did not get the win because the offense in front of him is awful. Ward didn't have a great season statistically, but on a better team, he could have won more games. He finished 22-24-5.
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal scored his 23rd goal of the season versus the Sabres on Monday.
Insight: Staal scored with just over five minutes remaining in regulation to bring Carolina within a goal of Buffalo after the Sabres led at one point, 4-0. The Hurricanes, though, could not get the game-tying goal. Staal also had an assist and has 23 goals and 30 assists in 74 games this season.
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal recorded three points during Thursday's win over the Penguins.
Insight: He had a goal and two assists, along with five shots and a plus-one rating on the night. Staal now has 20 goals and 47 points through 68 games this season. Jay McClement, Ryan Murphy, and Alexander Semin also tallied for Carolina.
Description: Hurricanes goalie Anton Khudobin allowed two goals and lost to the Blackhawks, 3-1, on Monday.
Insight: The last Chicago goal came with an empty net. Khudobin shouldn't be on many fantasy hockey teams as he is 8-15-5 this season and came into Monday with a 2.64 GAA and .903 save percentage in 31 games this season.
Description: Hurricanes center Elias Lindholm had three goals and two assists in the, 7-4, victory over the Oilers on Sunday.
Insight: Lindholm scored his goals on even strength and assisted two of Carolina's three power-play goals. He was plus-three in the game. Lindholm has 14 goals and 18 assists with a minus-16 rating in 63 games this season.
Description: Hurricanes defensemen Justin Faulk recorded two points during Tuesday's victory against the Flyers.
Insight: He had a goal and an assist, along with three shots and a plus-one rating. Faulk now has 11 goals and 38 points through 59 games. Jay McClement, Jeff Skinner, and Jordan Staal also tallied for the Hurricanes.
Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward played extremely well on Friday versus the Blues.
Insight: After starter Anton Khudobin allowed two goals on the first five shots of the game, Ward replaced Khudobin and stopped the bleeding. He actually did more than that as Ward did not allow another score, making 29 shots. Unfortunately, he didn't get the victory over Carolina lost in the shootout.
Description: Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin picked up a victory over the Lightning on Tuesday.
Insight: Khudobin made 28 saves and allowed just two goals as Carolina won, 4-2. Khudobin is just 6-8-2 this season but his other numbers, 2.32 GAA and .916 save percentage are better than Cam Ward's totals. Therfore, if owners have to own a Hurricanes' netminder, it should be Khudobin.
Description: Hurricanes center Jordan Staal had two assists in the victory over the Lightning on Tuesday.
Insight: Staal assisted his brother's goal 22 seconds into the game and then Justin Faulk's power-play goal in the second period. Staal has been disappointing as he missed a lot of time this season with injuries, but he has a goal and seven assists in 11 games.
Description: Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin will start on Tuesday.
Insight: Khudobin went into the break having allowed two or fewer goals in each of this last six starts. He has a 2.32 GAA and .916 save percentage in 16 games this season. If owners need goalie help, Khudobin could provide some.
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal scored two goals on Monday versus the Maple Leafs.
Insight: Staal registered an even-strength goal in the second period and then added an empty-netter towards the end of the third period. Staal has 15 goals and 13 assists in 41 games this season although he is hurting fantasy owners with a minus-eight rating.
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner scored a goal and an assist on Saturday versus the Blues.
Insight: Skinner assisted the first goal of the game and then after St. Louis tied it, Skinner scored a minute later to give Carolina the lead again. Unforunately for Skinner, the Hurricanes blew a 3-1 lead and lost, 5-4, in a shootout.
Description: Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin got the start on Saturday, and won in a shootout.
Insight: He defeated the Bruins by stopping 19-of-20 shots in regulation and overtime, and did not allow anything past him in the shootout. It was just Khudobin's second victory of the season, as he is now 2-8-2.
Description: Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin had a good game playing for the injured Cam Ward.
Insight: Khudobin stopped 26-of-28 shots for a .929 save percentage in the game against the Capitals. Unfortunately for Khudobin, the Hurricanes scored just one goal and lost, 2-1. Khudobin is still looking for his first victory this season.
Description: Hurricanes defensemen Justin Faulk scored a goal and an assist in Saturday's loss to the Penguins.
Insight: Faulk opened the scoring, but Pittsburgh answered with two goals in the next two minutes. Each team added a goal in the third period as the Penguins won, 3-2. Faulk has three goals and 13 assists this season.
Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward allowed two goals in a victory over the Penguins on Friday.
Insight: Carolina was the better team the entire game, outshooting Pittsburgh, 35-22, but Ward made a huge save on a delayed penalty call early in the first period to keep the game scoreless. While sliding to his left, Ward swatted away Blake Comeau's shot with his stick. Carolina also killed the penalty, which was the only Pittsburgh power play of the game. Ward is 7-8-1 this season but is playing much better in November. He had a .928 save percentage coming into the game and is now 7-5-0 this month.
Description: Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin will start on Saturday.
Insight: Khudobin hasn't played in over two weeks, so Carolina is probably giving him a start so he can avoid getting rusty. In training camp, Khudobin was expected to compete with Cam Ward for the starting job, but Ward clearly has the edge through the first month.
Description: Hurricanes center Elias Lindholm scored the game-winning goal on Friday against the Blue Jackets.
Insight: Lindholm scored on the power play with under a minute left in overtime. The assist came from Eric Staal. Carolina and Columbus are now tied at the bottom of the Metropolitan division with eight points.
Description: Hurricanes center Elias Lindholm led Carolina to its first victory of the season on Saturday.
Insight: Lindholm scored two goals, his first two of the season, in the first period to give Carolina an early lead. Jiri Tlusty added a power-play goal to add insurance, and Carolina won, 3-0. Lindholm was plus-two with four shots on goal.
Description: Hurricanes winger Alexander Semin will most likely be a healthy scratch on Saturday.
Insight: He has been an inconsistent player throughout his career, and head coach Bill Peters stated that Semin "isn't playing with the pace the league is at." That is a pretty big shot given, but it is warranted, as Semin has only two points, and is -7 through eight games. Carolina is paying him $7 million annually through the 2017-18 season.
Description: Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin played well in a shootout loss to the Rangers.
Insight: He gave up only one goal on 34 shots, and is making a case for more playing time. Him and Cam Ward are essentially playing every other game, however starts like this one could help Khudobin separate himself.
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera suffered an upper body injury in Tuesday's game against the Sabres and won't play Thursday.
Insight: Sekera tripped over his own goalie's stick, trying to prevent Buffalo's first score. Consider him day-to-day. He has two assists in three games after scoring 44 points last season, the best of his career.
Description: Hurricanes left winger Chris Terry scored a goal and added an assist as Carolina lost to Buffalo in a shootout, 4-3.
Insight: Terry scored his second goal of the season on a wrist shot in the third period. That was his only shot on net, and he was plus-two. Terry also scored Carolina's only shooutout goal in eight rounds as Buffalo finally ended the tie on Zemgus Girgensons' score.
Description: Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward allowed five goals on 26 shots on opening night against the Islanders.
Insight: Ward is battling Anton Khudobin for minutes between the pipes and this performance does not bode well for Ward staying in front of Khudobin on the depth chart. The Hurricanes and Islanders play again on Long Island Saturday, so expect Khudobin to start.
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal scored a garbage-time goal on opening night against the Islanders.
Insight: Carolina trailed New York at one point, 5-1, but Chris Terry and Staal scored with under six minutes to go in the third period to cut the deficit in half. The Hurricanes would get no closer. Staal had the goal, three shots on net and was minus-one.
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera had two assists on opening night against the Islanders.
Insight: Sekera had two shots on goal as well. He had the second helper on Nathan Gerbe's power play goal to get Carolina on the board and the primary assist on Chris Terry's slap shot goal at the 14:20 mark of the third period. New York won, however, 5-3.
Description: 19-year-old Elias Lindholm has moved to center to fill the void left by the injured Jordan Staal.
Insight: New coach Bill Peters was already moving his forwards around, trying out several different combinations and the injury to Staal will only further cause Peters to move players into different positions. He tested Lindholm out on a line with Jeff Skinner and Jiri Tlusty. That would be a good line for Lindholm, but even if he doesn't play with those guys, he shoud see an increase of production in his second year.
Description: Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis announced that center Jordan Staal suffered a broken bone in the lower part of his right left during Tuesday's preseason game against Buffalo according to NHL.com.
Insight: Staal was traveling back to Raleigh to undergo further tests. We do not yet know the extent of the injury. Regardless, this is terrible news.
Description: Hurricanes coach Bill Peters may be juggling his offensive lines, but he has the perfect top defensive line in Justin Faulk and Andrej Sekera.
Insight: Faulk and Sekera compliment each other extremely well both offensively and defensively. Sekera will likely lead the duo in goals and points, but Faulk should be on your fantasy radar as well. We project him to get around 35 points.
Description: Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera was a huge bright spot for Carolina last season.
Insight: In his first season in Carolina, Sekera nearly scored more goals than he had in his previous four seasons in Buffalo. He had 11 goals, 44 points and managed a plus-4 on a team that really struggled on defense. Paired with Justin Faulk once again, Sekera can prove that those numbers were no fluke.
Description: Hurricanes winger Jiri Tlusty may not play on the top line this season.
Insight: Everything is up in the air in Carolina due to the new head coach in Bill Peters. Tlusty has been a solid fantasy player the last few seasons, but he is heavily reliant on playing with Eric Staal and Alexander Semin. If that does not happen, he could be moved to the third line, where fantasy hockey players go to die.
Description: It is hard to know what to expect from Hurricanes winger Alexander Semin this season.
Insight: Semin scored 44 points in the same number of games in his first season with Carolina, but scored just 42 points in 65 games last season. There is a good chance that a concussion in December of 2013 severely slowed his production. New head coach Bill Peters has jumbled the lines in preseason, so there is no guarantee that Semin again plays on the top line. If he is on the top line, Semin is a solid mid-round pick otherwise, there is some risk involved.
Description: Hurricanes new coach Bill Peters is considering playing the Staal brothers on the same line according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
Insight: Peters also had Eric Staal playing alongside Jeff Skinner and second-year player Elias Lindholm, so obviously Peters is thinking of every possible combination. If the Staal brothers do play together, that will provide a huge boost for Jordan's fantasy value. In all likelihood, Eric will play with Skinner or his mates from last season, Jiri Tlusty and Alexander Semin.
Description: The Hurricanes are looking for Elias Lindholm to make major strides in his second season in the league.
Insight: The 19-year-old scored nine goals and 12 assists as a rookie last season. Captain Eric Staal said he thinks Lindholm improved as the season went along. With new head coach Bill Peters, it is possible Lindholm sees some time on the top line with Staal. That would make him a tremendous steal late in drafts.
Description: Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner will threaten to score 30 goals again this season.
Insight: Skinner had a career-high 33 goals last year as a second liner. At the start of training camp, he was playing alongside top centerman Eric Staal. If he stays on the top line, the expectations for Skinner rise dramatically.
Description: Hurricanes center Eric Staal started training camp at center in between wingers Jeff Skinner and Elias Lindholm according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
Insight: Carolina coach Bill Peters said do not read into the early season combinations, but fantasy owners like what they see so far. Skinner could again lead Carolina in goals and Lindholm has tremendous potential, being the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft. Expect Staal to lead the team with around 65 points.
Description: Hurricanes GM Ron Francis told CarolinaHurricanes.com that he expects forward Alexander Semin to be ready when training camp begins.
Insight: "He's training, according to his agent, a couple times a day and doing therapy on the wrist as well. There were no issues with the wrist, as far as I was told," Francis said. A report surfaced about a week-and-a-half ago that Semin hadn't fully recovered yet from off-season surgery to his wrist, which had been nagging him since the beginning of last year. Francis expects that to be a thing of the past.
Description: Carolina center Eric Staal suffered a core muscle injury while training and needed to undergo surgery, according to hurricanes.nhl.com.
Insight: GM Ron Francis said Staal should be ready for training camp. The 29-year-old had just 21 goals, 40 assists and 230 SOG over 79 games in 2013-14 after generating 18 goals, 35 assists and 152 SOG in 48 games during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.
