Catch Up Strategy

By Steve Schwarz, Fantasy Sports Editor

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - We're still not halfway through the 2010-11 NHL season, but if you find yourself falling behind, here's one strategy that might help you catch up quickly. Try putting two stars together who play on the same line.

It's a high-risk, high-reward strategy which I use a lot in fantasy football, combining a quarterback and receiver. Those 12-point touchdowns do wonders in getting you back into the championship picture.

Or in baseball where I'll combine the No.3 and No.4 hitters on the same team. If the team gets hot, the benefits can be huge.

The hottest pair of skaters over the past two weeks are the Anaheim Ducks combo of Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.

Perry has 13 points over the past 14 days (7G, 6A), including seven power play points, 34 SOG and a plus/minus rating of +3. Getzlaf has nine points (5G, 4A), with five power play points, 13 shots and a +1 rating. In even-strength situations, the two play together 95% of the time.

The third member of the line is usually Bobby Ryan, though he hasn't put up the same numbers the other two have over the past two weeks. Ryan has 14 goals and 13 assists this season while playing with Perry and Getzlaf 65% of the time.

Another line to key on would be the Anze Kopitar-Dustin Brown pair in Los Angeles.

Kopitar has four goals and six assist over the past 14 days and Brown has collected four goals and nine assists. They don't really have a consistent third guy as four wingers (Justin Williams, Brad Richardson, Scott Parse and Andrei Loktionov) have filled the role fairly equally.

So, while the other fantasy owners futilely try to get high profile players like Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom or Sidney Crosby, you can make up plenty of ground by combining a slightly lesser-known pair.

If you already have Perry or Getzlaf, obtaining the second through a trade shouldn't cost you an outrageous price because they were likely third or fourth round picks on Draft Day. Kopitar was also a third-round pick while Brown was a 15th-round selection.

Put two of these guys together and watch your title chances soar.
