2009-10 Final Defenseman Rankings

By Steve Schwarz, Fantasy Sports Editor

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It's always nice for the fantasy owner who drafts the first player at a position when he lives up to the hype by performing better than anyone else. Such is the case with the 2009-10 TSN Fantasy Defenseman of the Year Mike Green.

Green was the eighth player off the board, and first defenseman selected, after leading all blueliners in scoring last year with 73 points (34G, 42A). He certainly didn't disappoint his owners this year, boosting his point total to 76 although his goals fell from 34 to 19. He easily outdistanced No.2 Duncan Keith in every category to win the award.

When you are a free agent after the draft and manage to finish third in scoring at your position, either every fantasy owner was wrong about you or you came out of nowhere to become a fantasy star. In this case it's the latter. Doughty's pre-season ADP of 367 means he wasn't selected in most leagues until after the season began. He opened the season by scoring in the Kings' first five games and never looked back. The second-year player set personal highs in goals, assists, points, power play goals, power play points and shots on goal to become the 2009-10 TSN Best Bargain Award winner for Defensemen. At just 20- years-old he should be force for many years to come.

Edmonton's Sheldon Souray was considered an elite fantasy defenseman entering the season based on his 53-point 2008 season (23G, 30A) which was eighth-best among defensemen, 268 shots on goal (2nd highest) and 98 penalty minutes (15th highest). Unfortunately, a concussion and then a broken hand cut his season short. His numbers were already drastically down in all categories from the previous season. For that reason, Souray "wins" the 2009-10 TSN Most Disappointing Award for Defensemen.
