2010 Final Goaltender Rankings

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Like a fine wine, Martin Brodeur keeps getting better with age. The New Jersey Devils netminder had his best season since 2006-07 when he won the Vezina Trophy in helping the Devils win the Atlantic Division with 103 points. A league-leading 45 wins, third in goals against among those with at least 20 games played and first in shutouts with nine. For those who picked goaltenders ahead of him, he was fourth off the board (ADP 28), lesson learned. His excellent season-long performance gets Brodeur the 2010 TSN Fantasy Goaltender of the Year Award.
When the season began, Chris Osgood was the Detroit Red Wings primary goaltender and on Draft Day was selected around the end of the third round (ADP 39). Meanwhile, Jimmy Howard settled in as the Red Wings' backup goalie. Howard started slowly while getting the odd start, but when Osgood went down with the flu in November, Howard began to play better. By December, it was clearly Howard outplaying Osgood and he grabbed the lead role. Howard finished the season with 37 wins, a .924 save percentage and a GAA of 2.26. Given that he was likely a waiver pickup (ADP 245), Howard's performance wins him the 2010 TSN Best Bargain Award for Goalies.
Niklas Backstrom had strung together a couple of excellent seasons heading into this year, so it was not a surprise that he was the third goaltender "off the board" on Draft Day behind Evgeni Nabokov and Miikka Kiprusoff despite off- season hip surgery. Unfortunately, after posting consecutive 30+ win seasons with a save percentage at least .920 and a GAA no greater than 2.33, this season was going to be a nightmare. The Wild couldn't score goals and the defense didn't help much in clearing pucks around the net. This led to a mediocre 26-23-8 record and an ugly 2.72 GAA. Clearly, these were not the results expected of the No.3 netminder and because of the high expectations, Backstrom is selected for this year's Most Disappointing Award for Goalies
