Philip Rivers, QB12/28/2014 12:09:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is active for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
Insight: Not a surprise here as Rivers with the playoffs on the line. Rivers was listed as probable with chest and back injuries, but that was likely just a formality. Rivers is a low-end QB1 against a tough Chiefs defense on the road.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/28/2014 12:05:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews will not play on Sunday.
Insight: Mathews is inactive with an ankle injury, which means Branden Oliver will see more carries long with Donald Brown.
Keenan Allen, WR12/28/2014 12:03:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Chiefs.
Insight: Allen will miss the game due to his collarbone injury. Eddie Royal will likely see more opportunities with Allen sidelined.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/25/2014 10:05:00 AM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) is doubtful for Sunday's must-win game against Kansas City.
Insight: He didn't practice Wednesday and if he can't get on the practice field don't expect him in the game. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will see the majority of work.
Keenan Allen, WR12/25/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen has suffered a broken collarbone and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, though the team has yet to place him on injured reserve.
Insight: He leads the Chargers in receptions (77) and yards (783). Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal will start at wideout.
Philip Rivers, QB12/23/2014 11:05:00 AM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is dealing with a bulging disk in his back, but with a playoff spot on the line we expect him to be out there against kansas City.
Insight: Rivers threw for 356 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions as he led an impressive comeback in Week 16 against the 49ers. There is a chance he gets Keenan Allen back too.
Malcom Floyd, WR12/21/2014 10:13:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd caught the game-tying touchdown with 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter during Week 16 versus San Francisco.
Insight: He finished with four catches for 50 yards, and now has 49 receptions for 827 yards and six touchdowns on the season.
Antonio Gates, TE12/21/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates had a nice night against the 49ers.
Insight: He had seven receptions for 92 yards and two scores. Gates now has 65 catches for 754 and an impressive 12 touchdowns in 2014.
Eddie Royal, WR12/21/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal benefited from the absence of Keenan Allen on Saturday night.
Insight: He had team-highs of 10 receptions for 94 yards. Royal also found the end zone and had 12 targets. He is a reliable option for Philip Rivers.
Branden Oliver, RB12/21/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Chargers rookie running back Branden Oliver led the team in rushing during Saturday's win over San Francisco.
Insight: He rushed 13 times for 53 yards and caught three passes for 28 more yards. If owners have anything to play for in Week 17, Oliver will be a borderline RB2 if Ryan Mathews is still sidelined.
Philip Rivers, QB12/21/2014 9:58:00 AM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers led an impressive comeback in Week 16 against the 49ers.
Insight: He threw for 356 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. Rivers did most of his damage in the second half, throwing for three of those scores. He has 31 touchdowns and 16 interceptions overall.
Brandon Flowers, CB12/20/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers left Saturday's game with a right ankle injury.
Insight: He was stepped on by a teammate, but was able to return to the game.
Shareece Wright, CB12/20/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright left Saturday's game with a head injury.
Insight: He is questionable to return. Brandon Flowers also exited the contest, leaving San Diego with two healthy corners.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/20/2014 7:39:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) is officially out for Saturday's game against the 49ers.
Insight: Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will see the majority of work.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/19/2014 4:48:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) will not play Saturday versus San Francisco.
Insight: Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will continue to share the workload, with Oliver being the better flex option.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/18/2014 2:29:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) was inactive for Week 15 and has yet to practice this week leaving him with a doubtful tag for Week 16.
Insight: Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will continue to have value, with Oliver being the slightly more preferred player.
Keenan Allen, WR12/16/2014 2:32:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen has suffered a broken collarbone and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Insight: Allen also injured an ankle and left the stadium in a walking boot, but the ankle injury is now the least of his worries. He leads the Chargers in receptions (77) and yards (783).
Keenan Allen, WR12/15/2014 11:30:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen caught just three of eight targets for 18 yards and left the game in the third quarter.
Insight: Allen left the stadium in a walking boot. He'll have an MRI Monday.
Antonio Gates, TE12/15/2014 11:28:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates finished with a team-high seven targets, catching six, for 54 yards and a touchdown against Denver.
Insight: The Rivers-to-Gates touchdown pass was the 67th of their career tying them for sixth place all-time with Drew Brees and Marques Colston.
Philip Rivers, QB12/15/2014 11:22:00 AM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw 41 times, but produced just 232 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Insight: Rivers couldn't get anything going for a second straight weekend as the Chargers scored just 10 points. The early season MVP talk has long since disappeared.
Branden Oliver, RB12/15/2014 11:20:00 AM
Description: Chargers rookie running back Branden Oliver saw a majority of the workload, but produced just 26 yards on 12 carries.
Insight: Ryan Mathews missed tha game with an ankle injury and allowed Oliver and Donald Brown to carry the load. Oliver did catch four balls for 44 yards, but all in all it wasn't a very good day.
Keenan Allen, WR12/14/2014 6:27:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen suffered an ankle injury and his return is questionable.
Insight: Allen had not done anything in the game, catching three balls for 18 yards.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/14/2014 3:18:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) is inactive for Week 15.
Insight: Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will see a bump in value, with Oliver being the slightly more preferred player.
Branden Oliver, RB12/11/2014 4:26:00 PM
Description: Chargers rookie running back Branden Oliver could see extended playing time on Sunday.
Insight: Ryan Mathews has missed two consecutive practices with an ankle injury, and with his status in doubt, both Oliver and Donald Brown could be thrust into action. Oliver rused for over 100 yards in both Week 3 and Week 4, and was heavily involved in the passing game during Mathews' absence earlier this season. However, with all that being said, we would recommend Oliver as no more than a flex play if Mathews sits.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/11/2014 4:24:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice on Thursday.
Insight: This is the second straight practice Mathews has missed, leaving his availibilty in extreme question for Week 15. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown would see a bump in value, with Oliver being the slightly more preferred player.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/10/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.
Insight: He injured his right ankle during the first half of Week 14. He had only two carries during the second half, and his status is now in question for Sunday. Branden Oliver will see an increase in snaps if Mathews sits.
Mike Scifres, P12/8/2014 9:54:00 AM
Description: San Diego punter Mike Scifres will have surgery on a fractured clavicle Monday morning.
Insight: Punters aren't a part of fantasy consideration, but he was also the holder on field goals attempts, so his absence could effect Nick Novak. Isn't it time to make punters a part of fantasy football?
Eddie Royal, WR12/8/2014 9:50:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal wasn't a big part of the offense in this one, catching just two of five targets for 30 yards.
Insight: Keenan Allen was out of the picture for most of the night, so fantasy owners might have thought Royal, who caught nine balls and a touchdown last week, would be a major factor, but it was not to be. His back-to-back two-touchdown games in Week 3 and Week 4 are but a distant memory.
Malcom Floyd, WR12/8/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd had three receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: Floyd has been consistent this season catching at least three balls in all but one game. Unfortunately, his upside has been limited as he's cracked the 100-yard mark just once this season. His fantasy value is minimal.
Antonio Gates, TE12/8/2014 9:44:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates finished with a team-high eight targets, catching five, for 34 yards on Sunday.
Insight: With Keenan Allen blanketed and out of the picture, Philip Rivers tried to get Gates involved, but he didn't do much with the opportunities.
Philip Rivers, QBCold12/8/2014 9:41:00 AM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was held in check by Aqib Talib and the Patriots secondary.
Insight: Rivers' favorite target, Keenan Allen, was completely nullified by Talib and it left the Chargers quarterback searching for a backup plan which he never found. Rivers threw for just 189 yards with one touchdown and one interception. It won't get much easier next weekend when he is facing the pass-rushing Broncos.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/8/2014 9:38:00 AM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews could get nothing going on the ground against the Patriots defense.
Insight: Mathews rushed for 44 yards on 11 carries, but the injury-prone back hurt his leg and didn't play much in the second half.
Antonio Gates, TE11/30/2014 6:45:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates finished with seven receptions and 83 yards on Sunday.
Insight: With Philip Rivers seemingly returning to top form, Gates will be a clear TE1 optio for the fantasy playoffs. Gates has 47 catches for 574 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
Eddie Royal, WR11/30/2014 6:41:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal was one of four San Diego receivers to finish with at least 80 yards.
Insight: Keenan Allen was clearly Philip Rivers favorite target as he hauled in 11 catches for 121 yards, but Royal nine receptions for 83 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown. Malcolm Floyd and Antonio Gates also had more than 80 yards receiving.
Keenan Allen, WR11/30/2014 6:38:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen is heating up just in time for the fantasy playoffs.
Insight: Allen caught 11 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns versus the Ravens in Week 13. This is the second straight week Allen scored a touchdown. He is becoming an option for owners in the playoffs.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/30/2014 6:33:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews salvaged his fantasy day with a fourth quarter touchdown against the Ravens.
Insight: Mathews gained just 38 yards on 13 carries, but it was likely due to the tough matchup versus the Ravens run defense. Unfortunately, the schedule doesn't get much easier for Mathews as the Chargers face New England, Denver, San Francisco and Kansas City the last four weeks.
Philip Rivers, QB11/30/2014 6:27:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers bounced back from a rough start to the game in Baltimore.
Insight: Rivers threw an interception on the first drive of the game, but he finished with 383 passing yards and three touchdowns with just the one pick. The performance should have given fantasy owners confidence to plug him back into lineups for the fantasy playoffs.
Malcom Floyd, WR11/17/2014 10:34:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd had four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: Floyd has been consistent this season catching at least three balls in all but one game. But he's also cracked the 100-yard mark just once, so his fantasy value is dependent upon getting into the end zone and he's caught just four touchdown passes this season.
Antonio Gates, TE11/17/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates finished with three receptions and 32 yards on Sunday against Oakland
Insight: It was just another awful game from the San Diego tight end. His four-game touchdown streak seems ages ago and if he isn't scoring he isn't producing for fantasy owners as his last 100-yard game was back in September 2013.
Keenan Allen, WR11/17/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen led the team with 13 targets versus the Raiders.
Insight: Allen had eight catches but for just 63 yards. We need more out of him than that!
Philip Rivers, QB11/17/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was just 22-of-34 for 193 yards and one touchdown against Oakland.
Insight: Rivers had his leg rolled up on a couple of times and was walking with a noticable limp, but continued to play through it. Hopefully, it won't swell up during the week.
Branden Oliver, RB11/17/2014 10:26:00 AM
Description: Chargers rookie running back Branden Oliver took a back seat to Ryan Mathews in Week 11, rushing 13 times for 36 yards.
Insight: Oliver owners shouldn't give up as Mathews was seen limping out of the stadium after the game and the oft-injured running back may not be ready for Week 12.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/17/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews rushed 16 times for 70 yards in his first action since Week 2.
Insight: Mathews was seen limping after the game and had his knee wrapped, so Branden Oliver owners shouldn't abandon ship just yet.
Philip Rivers, QB11/16/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has his left leg rolled up on in the third quarter and was limping noticable.
Insight: Rivers continued to play, but it could be a concern later in the game and for next weekend.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/12/2014 3:19:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is practicing on Wednesday according to ESPN Chargers reporter Eric Williams.
Insight: Mathews practiced before Week 9, but the Chargers rested him. He is fully expected to play this week after missing seven games with a sprained MCL. He is a solid RB2 with a favorable matchup against the Raiders.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/5/2014 1:08:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (knee) practiced on Wednesday, and is expected to return for Week 11.
Insight: San Diego is on their bye for Week 10, but Mathews should be ready to roll coming out of it.
Antonio Gates, TE11/2/2014 7:13:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates finished with three receptions and 28 yards on Sunday.
Insight: It was just an awful game from the San Diego offense. It is hard to have a decent fantasy day on an offense that gets shutout.
Keenan Allen, WR11/2/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen led the team with 9 targets versus the Dolphins.
Insight: Allen had four catches for 47 yards. No one on the Chargers scored.
Malcom Floyd, WR11/2/2014 7:02:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd had four receptions for 60 yards versus the Dolphins.
Insight: With the Chargers getting shutout, Floyd had the best fantasy day for any San Diego player.
Branden Oliver, RB11/2/2014 6:57:00 PM
Description: Chargers rookie running back Branden Oliver received more carries than teammate Donald Brown but was not as successful.
Insight: Neither back did very well, but Oliver averaged just 1.5 yards per rush with 19 yards on 13 carries. Brown had a great average as he gained 23 yards on four carries. The Chargers will be on their bye next week, and in Week 11, it will be hard to trust Oliver with two straight dud performances.
Philip Rivers, QB11/2/2014 6:50:00 PM
Description: So much for the Philip Rivers MVP campaign.
Insight: Rivers had, by far, his worse game of the season in Miami. He completed less than half of his passes for 138 yards and threw three interceptions. Rivers also lost a fumble. That gave him negative points in standard fantasy leagues.
Donald Brown, RB11/2/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Donald Brown (concussion) has yet to be cleared and is active for Week 9.
Insight: Brown may be active, but Branden Oliver will be the starter and workhorse. Brown doesn't have much fantasy value.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/31/2014 3:03:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews got in a limited practice, but has already been ruled out for Week 9.
Insight: Mathews have not played since Sept. 14 and will be held out through the Week 10 bye. Branden Oliver has played well so even when Mathews returns he'll likely share time.
Jason Verrett, CB10/30/2014 2:30:00 PM
Description: Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett has a torn labrum and will miss 2-3 weeks, according to Ian Rapoport.
Insight: The rookie has played well this season, though his statistics aren't exciting with one interception and 19 tackles.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/29/2014 3:35:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews will not be rushed back because Branden Oliver is playing so well in the San Diego backfield.
Insight: Mathews have not played since Sept. 14, and it "appears likely" he will be held out through the Week 10 bye according to the Union-Tribune San Diego. If you have held on to him this long, don't drop him. Remain patient because Mathews may return to be the starter.
Richard Crawford, CB10/27/2014 3:53:00 PM
Description: The Chargers made two moves in their secondary Monday including this one signing Richard Crawford.
Insight: The former Washington Redskins defensive back takes the place of the just released Richard Marshall.
Eddie Royal, WRCold10/24/2014 9:43:00 AM
Description: San Diego receiver Eddie Royal's caught just three balls for 29 yards in The Thursday night loss to Denver.
Insight: Royal has been quiet over the past four games with just 138 yards and one touchdown over the span. That's not fantasy worthy.
Keenan Allen, WR10/24/2014 9:39:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen led the team with 13 targets, catching nine for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: With the Broncos great pass rush, short, quick passes were the strategy for the night which is why Allen finished the day with just an 8.1 yards-per-catch average.
Malcom Floyd, WR10/24/2014 9:39:00 AM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd left the game briefly after falling hard on his shoulder but returned to catch four balls for 58 yards.
Insight: He's a boom-or-bust receiver because he's the Charger's deep threat with Keenan Allen the possession receiver and Antonio Gates the red zone guy.
Antonio Gates, TEHot10/24/2014 9:36:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates continues to be Philip Rivers' favorite target in the red zone.
Insight: Some things never change. Gates is adept at getting just enough room for Rivers to stuff it in there. Thursday night he scored twice from inside the 10-yard line.
Philip Rivers, QB10/24/2014 9:34:00 AM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers was forced to throw more than he would like and ended up 30-of-41 for 252 yards, three scores and two interceptions.
Insight: It wasn't a great night, but it likely won't kill fantasy owners. Rivers is still producing top-five statistics at the quarterback position and one "off" night won't change that.
Branden Oliver, RB10/24/2014 9:30:00 AM
Description: Charger rookie running back Branden Oliver was once again the workhorse (20 touches), but struggled to find any open space.
Insight: Oliver carried the ball 13 times for just 36 yards and caught seven balls for 27 yards and didn't score. The Denver defense doesn't get noticed with their media-fed offense stealing the show, but they are pretty good and Oliver will have better days down the road against weaker teams.
Brandon Flowers, CB10/20/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers left Sunday's game due to a concussion and given they are scheduled to play Thursday, that's not much time to pass all the required tests.
Insight: Flowers and Jason Verrett may both miss Thursday's game against Denver. With Peyton Manning on a roll, it's hard to imaging a short-handed Chargers secondary slowing him down.
Jason Verrett, CB10/20/2014 11:00:00 AM
Description: Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett was inactive for Week 7 and with a short work week before Thursday's game is not expected to return to the secondary, according to Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego.
Insight: With Payton Manning on the horizon, it's not a good time to be thin in the secondary. Just ask the 49ers.
Keenan Allen, WR10/20/2014 9:36:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen led the team with 10 targets, but ended up with a mediocre six receptions for 58 yards.
Insight: Allen has been a disappointment for all but one game this season and we're beginning to think last season was a fluke. With Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal along with Antonio Gates, Allen has become "just another receiver" in the stable versus last season when he was "the guy."
Antonio Gates, TE10/20/2014 9:33:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates had a couple of All-Pro catches, but his game numbers were just average - three receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: It all came down to the fact the Chiefs held the ball for 39 minutes and the Chargers offense didn't get enough chances.
Philip Rivers, QB10/20/2014 9:31:00 AM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers had a hot first half (11-of-16 for 122 yards and two scores), but the San Diego defense couldn't get off the field in the second half and Rivers did little after the break.
Insight: Rivers finished with 205 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, but fantasy owners have come to expect much more.
Branden Oliver, RB10/20/2014 9:28:00 AM
Description: Charger rookie running back Branden Oliver was once again the workhorse, but for the first time he didn't produce top numbers.
Insight: Oliver carried the ball 15 times with Ronnie Brown getting just one carry. Unfortunately, he totaled just 78 combined yards and no scores.
Branden Oliver, RBHot10/17/2014 2:31:00 PM
Description: Charger rookie running back Branden Oliver should be a workhorse again in Week 7.
Insight: Oliver carried the ball 26 times last weekend and the Chargers still don't have a viable option behind him.
Donald Brown, RB10/17/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Donald Brown (concussion) has yet to be cleared for practice, so it looks like another good week for Branden Oliver fantasy owners.
Insight: It's always a crapshoot when dealing with concussion and trying to figure out a timetable.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/15/2014 3:40:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is not practicing this week according to the Union-Tribune San Diego.
Insight: Mathews is now one month removed from his MCL sprain, but he still has not begun running. He will return in Week 8 at the very earliest.
Antonio Gates, TE10/13/2014 11:12:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates saw a team-high eight targets, but caught just three balls for 27 yards.
Insight: At least he scored on one of the three catches to make his day more palatable to fantasy owners.
Keenan Allen, WRCold10/13/2014 11:09:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen did nothing for a second straight weekend.
Insight: Allen has been a disappointment for all but one game this season and we're beginning to think last season was a fluke. Stay tuned.
Malcom Floyd, WR10/13/2014 11:06:00 AM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd cracked the 100-yard mark for the first time since September 2013.
Insight: We're not sold on him because of the one good game against Oakland, but if he can show us something again next week we might consider him in a flex role.
Branden Oliver, RBHot10/13/2014 11:05:00 AM
Description: Charger rookie Branden Oliver was impressive again against Oakland, rushing for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: He carried the ball 26 times and appears that he's turning into a classic workhorse back. He's a must start.
Philip Rivers, QBHot10/13/2014 11:03:00 AM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers was once again a top fantasy quarterback, passing for 313 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Insight: Rivers is proving that last season wasn't a fluke. he's averaging 292.7 ypg and his 15-2 TD to interception ration is exceptional. Rivers leads the league with a 117.6 QB rating and with his team at 5-1 should be talked about for MVP.
Donald Brown, RB10/9/2014 3:57:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Donald Brown missed another practice due to a concussion and is almost certainly going to miss Week 6.
Insight: Thus adds more value to Branden Oliver with only "newly-acquired" Ronnie brown as a backup.
Ronnie Brown, RB10/7/2014 6:31:00 PM
Description: The Chargers have signed running back Ronnie Brown.
Insight: He spent 2012-13 in San Diego, however the reunion is not expected to last long. Donald Brown (concussion) is looking unlikely for this week, giving Ronnie Brown an opportunity to prove himself. However, Ryan Mathews is expected back soon, as well. This is not a fantasy-relevant move.
Eddie Royal, WR10/6/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: San Diego receiver Eddie Royal's two-touchdown streak had to come to an end sometime and that time was Sunday against the Jets.
Insight: Royal was quiet with three catches for 40 yards, but still has a solid 276 yards and four touchdowns for the season.
Antonio Gates, TE10/6/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates caught just four balls for 60 yards, but two were for touchdowns to make Chargers fans and fantasy owners happy.
Insight: It's been feast or famine with Gates this season with two huge games and three weak ones. It's likely to stay that way as quarterback Philip Rivers doesn't usually force the ball to any one receiver, instead taking what the defense gives him.
Keenan Allen, WR10/6/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen was quiet in Sunday romp over the Jets.
Insight: Allen was targeted seven times, but caught just three for 25 yards. San Diego didn't need him as Branden Oliver did most of the heavy lifting and Antonio Gates caught two touchdown passes.
Branden Oliver, RBHot10/6/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Former University at Buffalo rookie Branden Oliver was impressive in Week 5 and should be near the top of all waiver wire pickup lists this week.
Insight: With Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead injured, Oliver out-played Donald Brown by rushing 19 times for 114 yards and a touchdown and catching all four targets for 68 yards and a score.
Philip Rivers, QBHot10/6/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers was right on target all day, going 20-of-28 for 288 yards and three touchdowns.
Insight: Rivers would have thrown for a lot more yards, but the Chargers already had an insurmountable lead at the break. He had 244 passing yards in the first half alone.
Antonio Gates, TE9/29/2014 10:04:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates had a quiet day against Jacksonville, catching just three balls for 30 yards.
Insight: Philip Rivers looked to Keenan Allen and Eddie Royal for most of the day. Gates is still getting over a hamstring issue so this wasn't the worst thing that could happen ... well except to fantasy owners who never want a guy to take it easy when he's in the lineup.
Keenan Allen, WRHot9/29/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen finally appeared healthy and put up the fantasy numbers we saw all last season.
Insight: Allen caught 10 of 11 targets for 135 yards after totaling just 109 yards in the first three games.
Eddie Royal, WRHot9/29/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: San Diego receiver Eddie Royal has become a big part of the Chargers offense and fantasy owners should take note.
Insight: Royal caught five balls for 105 yards and two scores against Jacksonville. That's on top of last weekend's two touchdown receptions. He's getting consistent targets (29 through four games) and starting to produce. Time to put him on your roster.
Philip Rivers, QBHot9/29/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: It's nice when things go according to plan and Chargers QB Philip Rivers lit up the Jaguars pass defenses as expected.
Insight: Rivers threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. That's without much production in the fourth quarter (16 passing yards) after building a big lead.
Donald Brown, RB9/29/2014 9:48:00 AM
Description: Chargers running back Donald Brown did very little against Jacksonville.
Insight: Brown rushed 10 times for 19 yards and caught four of six targets for 35 yards. We're just going to chalk this up to the Chargers ripping apart the Jaguars through the air and not using their ground game.
Keenan Allen, WR9/28/2014 3:34:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen had practiced all week and is active for Week 4 against Jacksonville.
Insight: Everyone wants to play against this Jaguars passing defense, ranked 32nd (last), yielding 306 ypg and 2.67 touchdowns through the air.
Keenan Allen, WR9/27/2014 3:39:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen has practiced all week and is probable for Week 4 against Jacksonville..
Insight: Everyone wants to play against this Jaguars passing defense, ranked 32nd (last), yielding 306 ypg and 2.67 touchdowns through the air.
Danny Woodhead, RB9/22/2014 5:04:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Danny Woodhead is out for the rest of the season according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Chargers news.
Insight: Woodhead needs surgery on his fractured fibula and ankle, an injury he suffered in the first quarter against the Bills in Week 3. With Ryan Mathews (knee) out three or four more weeks, San Diego will likely use Donald Brown as their workhouse back.
Antonio Gates, TE9/21/2014 4:48:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was the target of the Bills defense and they held him in check, giving up just one catch for eight yards.
Insight: The Bills defense forced Philip Rivers to look elsewhere which he did successfully, so Chargers fans were happy ... expect for those who started Gates in their fantasy league.
Malcom Floyd, WR9/21/2014 4:45:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd saw just four targets in Week 3 against Buffalo, but caught two of them for 98 yards.
Insight: Floyd wasn't part of the game plan in Week 2 against Seattle, so it was good to see him post something of value in Week 3.
Donald Brown, RB9/21/2014 4:38:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Donald Brown saw a big jump in workload against Buffalo after Danny Woodhead was injured in the first quarter.
Insight: Brown rushed 31 times for 62 yards and caught five of six targets for 27 yards. It wasn't very productive given 36 touches, but that will come if Woodhead is sidelined for any length of time.
Philip Rivers, QB9/21/2014 4:35:00 PM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers was solid again Sunday in Week 3, throwing for 256 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Insight: Rivers has just one interception over the first three games with six touchdowns passes. He hasn't thrown for 300 yards yet, but he's going to give you solid production every week.
Danny Woodhead, RB9/21/2014 1:12:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Danny Woodhead was injured in the first quarter of the game with Buffalo and was taken off the field on a cart.
Insight: Woodhead had gained a yard on a run when he was injured. It appears he injured an ankle. Donald Brown should be in for a busy afternoon now that Woodhead has joined Ryan Mathews on the sidelines.
Antonio Gates, TE9/21/2014 11:58:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) took Wednesday off, but returned to practice Thursday and is in the starting lineup as expected.
Insight: A lot of veterans take Wednesday off to help them get ready for the next game. Last Sunday Gates took apart the Seahawks secondary for three touchdowns. He caught all seven targets for 96 yards. He should be a factor again Sunday.
Antonio Gates, TE9/19/2014 3:29:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) took Wednesday off, but returned to practice Thursday and is expected to play against Buffalo Sunday.
Insight: A lot of veterans take Wednesday off to help them get ready for the next game. Last Sunday Gates took apart the Seahawks secondary for three touchdowns. He caught all seven targets for 96 yards. He should be a factor again Sunday.
Keenan Allen, WR9/18/2014 4:43:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen was added to the team's injury report on Thursday and was limited in practice due to a groin injury.
Insight: It is a new injury that he must have suffered on Thursday. It doesn't sound too alarming, but we will certainly keep our eyes on whether Allen practices on Friday.
Keenan Allen, WR9/16/2014 2:44:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (ribs) was active in Week 2, but not productive.
Insight: Allen was obviously the focal point of the Seahawks defense and held him to five receptions for 55 yards, but in doing so they allowed Antonio Gates to run wild in the secondary. Good for the Chargers, bad for Allen's fantasy owners.
Eddie Royal, WR9/16/2014 2:42:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Eddie Royal was a big part of the Chargers offense Sunday, seeing 10 targets and catching six of them for 69 yards.
Insight: Royal had a surprisingly good season with San Diego last year with 47 receptions for 631 and eight TDs. The return of Malcom Floyd hasn't changed that at all and Royal could be a WR3.
Donald Brown, RB9/16/2014 2:26:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Donald Brown should take a big jump in production while Ryan Mathews is sidelined by a knee injury.
Insight: He'll still be sharing time with Danny Woodhead, but should get the larger share of the rushing attempts while Woodhead is the pass receiver.
Danny Woodhead, RB9/16/2014 2:23:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Danny Woodhead should quickly gain fantasy value with the injury to starter Ryan Mathews.
Insight: Donald Brown may still get more rushing attempts than Woodhead, but Woodhead is the better receiver and should have more fantasy value. Sunday, Woodhead rushed eight times and caught four balls for 59 total yards. Woodhead totaled 1,034 yards from scrimmage and eight TDs last season.
Ryan Mathews, RB9/14/2014 10:38:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews appears to have suffered a sprained MCL, according to a Union-Tribune San Diego report.
Insight: It's better than an ACL injury, but he's still likely to miss significant time. The injury would make Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead the two primary ball carries for the Chargers.
Antonio Gates, TEHot9/14/2014 7:45:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) was active for Week 2 and dominated the seahawks secondary.
Insight: Rumors of Gates' demise have been greatly exaggerated. Sunday he took apart the Seahawks secondary for three touchdowns. He caught all seven targets for 96 yards. Ladarius Green who?
Philip Rivers, QBHot9/14/2014 7:44:00 PM
Description: Chargers QB Philip Rivers didn't have much trouble with the Seahawks much-heralded defense, going 19-of-23 for 191 yards and two touchdowns ... in the first half.
Insight: He finished well too, with 284 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Antonio Gates, TE9/14/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) is active for Week 2
Insight: As long as Gates is healthy, he's the tight end to have and he limits talented youngster Ladarius Green to the fantasy bench.
Keenan Allen, WR9/14/2014 2:59:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (ribs) listed as probable for Week 2, is active.
Insight: Allen was still on the injury report with his rib issue, but he had not missed any practices. He is risky against the Seahawks this week though.
Keenan Allen, WR9/12/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (ribs) is listed as probable for Week 2.
Insight: Allen is still on the injury report with his rib issue, but he has not say out any practices. He is risky against the Seahawks this week though.
Antonio Gates, TE9/12/2014 10:43:00 AM
Description: Rumors of Chargers tight end Antonio Gates "death" have been greatly exaggerated.
Insight: Gates was supposed to be in decline and ready to give way to Ladarius Green, but he was the better Chargers tight end with six catches for 81 yards in the opener. He's got a tough assignment in Week 2 against the defending Super Bowl champions.
Ladarius Green, TECold9/12/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Chargers tight end Ladarius Green was on the field for just 24 of 62 plays in Week 1.
Insight: Green is expected to take over when Antonio Gates is ready to retire and some thought the changing of the guard would happen this year, but based on Week 1 its not happening. Green caught two balls for 24 yards against the Cardinals, dropping three of six targets.
Keenan Allen, WR9/11/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (ribs) remains on the injury report for Week 2, but practiced in full for a second-straight week.
Insight: The injury isn't the concern this week; it's the Legion of Boom defense. Allen is a risky play against Seattle but returns to a borderline WR1 in Week 3.
Nick Hardwick, C9/10/2014 2:35:00 PM
Description: Chargers center Nick Hardwick (neck) has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
Insight: San Diego used Rich Ohrnberger at the center spot with Hardwick sidelined and didn't miss a beat, but long-term he's a journeyman. He'll be tested in Week 2 by the Seattle defense.
Keenan Allen, WR9/8/2014 9:24:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (ribs) was listed as probable for Monday night's game against the Cardinals and is active.
Insight: Allen didn't miss any practice this week despite the rib injury. He is a strong WR2 start against Arizona.
Keenan Allen, WR9/6/2014 9:43:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (ribs) is listed as probable for Monday night's game against the Cardinals.
Insight: Allen didn't miss any practice this week despite the rib injury. He is a strong WR2 start against Arizona.
Antonio Gates, TE9/6/2014 6:02:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Monday night's opener against the Cardinals according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego.
Insight: Gates twaked his hamstring on Saturday. He was officially "limited" for the rest of practice and will be a game-time decision, which is tough for fantasy owners because he plays in the last game of the week. LaDarius Green is another tight end option from the Chargers.
Vincent Brown, WR8/30/2014 9:37:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Vincent Brown was released Saturday.
Insight: There had been so much hope that he cpuld develop into a quality receiver, but too many injuries have kept him from progessing. Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal and Keenan Allen will play the X, Y,Z spots, respectively
Manti Te'o, LB8/17/2014 3:12:00 PM
Description: San Diego second-year linebacker Manti Te'o suffered a left foot sprain in the Chargers preseason game against Seattle, according to a Union-Tribune San Diego report
Insight: He missed five games last season after injuring his right foot versus the seahawks last preseason, but the team hopes this isn't as bad.
Ryan Mathews, RB8/8/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews fumbled the ball at the goal line in the preseason opener.
Insight: Mathews has had a fumbling problem in the past, so this is alarming despite coach Mike McCoy saying he would continue to use him. If the problem persists the Chargers have other options in Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown so this situation should be monitored.
Branden Oliver, RB8/8/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: University at Buffalo rookie Branden Oliver was impressive in rushing for 64 yards and a score on just seven carries.
Insight: Even if he makes the final 53-man roster we have a hard time envisioning him with fantasy value with Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown in front of him on the depth chart.
Brandon Flowers, CB6/24/2014 9:26:00 PM
Description: Brandon Flowers has reached a one-year deal with San Diego. SOURCE: Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports
Insight: Flowers was cut by Kansas City earlier this month. Flowers made 68 tackles last year en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Vincent Brown, WR6/6/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Vincent Brown will apparently be the No. 4 receiver because he is so versatility, according to beat writer Michael Gehlken.
Insight: Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal and Keenan Allen will play the X, Y,Z spots, respectively, with Brown playing the utility role. It likely kills any fantasy value.
Malcom Floyd, WR5/28/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd (neck) said he has been cleared for contact, according to Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune.
Insight: Floyd suffered a career-threatening neck injury on Sept. 15 last season. A doctor determined that Floyd isn't at greater risk of a spinal injury if he continues playing. With Floyd out, rookie Keenan Allen stepped up as Philip Rivers' No. 1 target and had 1,000 yards. If Floyd returns this season, he'll compete with Eddie Royal and Vincent Brown for the No. 2 receiver job, though he won't have much fantasy value with veteran Antonio Gates and 23-year-old Ladarius Green around at tight end and Danny Woodhead catching balls out of the backfield.
Malcom Floyd, WR5/19/2014 8:23:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd (neck) is expected to play in 2014, according to the Union-Tribune.
Insight: Floyd suffered a career-threatening neck injury on Sept. 15 last season. A doctor determined that Floyd isn't at greater risk of a spinal injury if he continues playing. "The doc said ... I'm at risk just like anybody else," Floyd said Monday. "There's not really a worry." With Floyd out, rookie Keenan Allen stepped up as Philip Rivers' No.
Donald Brown, RB3/12/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Donald Brown is headed to the Chargers on a three-year, $10.5 million deal. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL Network
Insight: Toby Gerhart received the same money from Jacksonville in a deal last night. Brown has never rushed for more than 645 yards in a season and we don't anticipate that changing in San Diego. He'll be competing with Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead for carries in 2014.
Danario Alexander, WR2/19/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Free agent wideout Danario Alexander is dealing with major complications from his knee surgery, according to foxsports.com.
Insight: Alexander had surgery on his torn right ACL last August and had to undergo a second surgery on the ligament in January. Since that procedure, Alexander has undergone "multiple" surgeries because of infection. The 25-year-old already had undergone five surgeries on his left knee dating back to before he entered the NFL when he tore his right ACL during the 2013 preseason. The receiver showed promise with 37 catches, 658 yards and seven touchdowns in the final nine games of 2012 for the Chargers but his career is in jeopardy.
Danario Alexander, WR2/7/2014 1:57:00 PM
Description: Free agent wideout Danario Alexander had a second surgery on his torn right ACL last month and is questionable for the start of next season.
Insight: Alexander has little hope of signing more than a one-year deal after seven knee surgeries.
Philip Rivers, QB2/1/2014 9:30:00 PM
Description: And the award for NFL's Comeback Player of the Year goes to ... none other than Chargers QB Philip Rivers.
Insight: Peyton Manning won Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2012. He's since graduated to the MVP award. While we don't predict that will happen with Rivers, he did have a remarkable year, throwing for 32 TD and 4,478 passing yards en route to a 105.5 quarterback rating. He figures to be a top-ten quarterback heading into next year's fantasy draft.
Keenan Allen, WR1/12/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Keenan Allen came on strong in the second half Sunday against the Broncos. He finished with six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns after half time.
Insight: That came after being held without a catch for the game's first two quarters. Both of Allen's touchdown receptions came in the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored all 17 of their points during that same period. Allen, a third-round pick out of Cal-Berkeley in 2013, is on the cusp of fantasy superstardom. Make sure to lock him up if you own him in a keeper or dynasty league.
Manti Te'o, LB1/12/2014 6:16:00 PM
Description: CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reports that Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te'o will not play the second half of Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Insight: He's already been diagnosed with a concussion. Bront Bird will have to fill in at inside linebacker.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 5:25:00 PM
Description: Update: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews returned to the game moments ago.
Insight: It looks like he's okay. Mathews (ankle) is operating at about 50 percent right now so don't be surprised if he leaves the game for an extended period of time like he did earlier. So far, the 26-year-old has rushed four times for 25 yards.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: San Diego halfback Ryan Mathews had two carries on the team's first drive of the game Sunday against the Broncos but he hasn't played since.
Insight: Mathews didn't practice all week because of an ankle injury and he's clearly nowhere close to 100 percent. We'd be surprised if he returns to this game. Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown will carry the load with Mathews hobbled.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 3:31:00 PM
Description: Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is active for Sunday's playoff game against the Broncos.
Insight: Mathews has been limited in practice for the past few weeks but he hasn't had to miss a game. He rushed for 1,021 yards and six touchdowns on 218 carries (4.7 ypc) over his last 11 games of the year, including 473 yards and three scores in his final four.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: The Chargers expect Ryan Mathews (ankle) to play in Sunday's playoff game at Denver, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Insight: Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Woodhead would cover for Mathews if he can't go, but Mathews has been limited in practice for the past few weeks and still hasn't missed a game. He rushed for 1,021 yards and six touchdowns on 218 carries (4.7 ypc) over his last 11 games of the year, including 473 yards and three scores the final four.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/10/2014 2:43:00 PM
Description: San Diego tailback Ryan Mathews was forced from Sunday's game with an ankle injury and missed all three practices this week.
Insight: Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Woodhead would cover for Mathews if he can't go, but Mathews has been limited in practice for the past few weeks and still hasn't missed a game. He's in the late Sunday game so he'll have the most recovery time possible.
Nick Hardwick, C1/6/2014 11:50:00 AM
Description: Chargers center Nick Hardwick left Sunday's game after suffering a stinger and is questionable for Sunday's AFC Divisional Playoff against Denver.
Insight: San Diego used Rich Ohrnberger at the center spot with Hardwick sidelined and didn't miss a beat.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/6/2014 11:32:00 AM
Description: San Diego tailback Ryan Mathews was forced from Sunday's game with an ankle injury and is listed as questionable for Sunday's AFC Divisional Playoff against Denver.
Insight: It seemed to be an aggravation of an injury he suffered earlier in the season. Danny Woodhead led the team in carries in Mathews' absence, rushing 15 times for 54 yards and one touchdown. Ronnie Brown also saw some extra playing time. This could be a shared situation unless Mathews is back to 100 percent by game-time.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/5/2014 6:48:00 PM
Description: San Diego halfback Ryan Mathews was forced from Sunday's game with an ankle injury.
Insight: It seemed to be an aggravation of an injury he suffered earlier in the season. Danny Woodhead led the team in carries in Mathews' absence, rushing 15 times for 54 yards and one touchdown. Ronnie Brown also saw some extra looks, finishing the afternoon with 77 yards on eight totes. The Chargers play in Denver next week. Mathews should be considered questionable for that contest.
Nick Hardwick, C1/5/2014 1:28:00 PM
Description: Chargers center Nick Hardwick left Sunday's game after taking a blow to the head.
Insight: San Diego will use Rich Ohrnberger at the center spot while Hardwick goes through the concussion protocol.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/5/2014 12:20:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but the team was just protecting their injury-prone back and he's active for Sunday's game with Cincinnati.
Insight: Mathews has been a top running back over the second half of the season and San Diego will need him to play well if they are going to beat Cincinnati on the road in the bad weather.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/2/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but still is expected to play Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Mathews has been a top running back over the second half of the season and San Diego will need him if they are going to beat Cincinnati on the road in the bad weather.
