Description: Buffalo wideout Marquise Goodwin will be a participant in the long jump at the weekend's U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships..
Insight: Goodwin has yet to prove himself on the football field and might have a better future on the track. He's caught just 18 balls for 325 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons. The Bills have Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin and Robert Woods to see most of the wideout targets.
Description: Don't count out quarterback Tyrod Taylor in the battle for the starting role in Buffalo, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Taylor never got a chance in Baltimore behind Joe Flacco, but signed with Buffalo instead of taking another offer to play behind Peyton Manning in Denver. He's gotten plenty of work in the OTAs and could beat out mediocre options Matt Cassell and E.J. Manuel.
Description: Bills wideout Sammy Watkins has minor offseason hip surgery, according to Josina Anderson.
Insight: Watkins might be slowed in OTAs, but should be ready to go when camp opens. He had a pretty good rookie season all things considered with 65 receptions for 982 yards and six scores. He'll have Matt Cassell throwing to him this season, but may have to share a few targets with newly-acquired Percy Harvin.
Description: Bills wideout Sammy Watkins had three catches for 57 yards against the Patriots.
Insight: Watkins had a pretty good rookie season, but for fantasy purposes, Watkins is boom-or-bust because he relies so much on the big play. Watkins finished just shy of 1,000 yards receiving with 982 on 65 catches and six touchdowns.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson rushed 18 times for 58 yards versus the Patriots.
Insight: It was pretty amazing to see Jackson do what he did as a 33-year-old running back. He didn't wow anybody with his numbers, but he was pretty reliable in big spots for the Bills and fantasy owners. Jackson gained 964 yards from scrimmage on 188 touches this season.
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton had a decent game, going 16-for-23 with 176 yards and a touchdown on Sunday.
Insight: Orton was a good game-manager for the Bills this season as they finished second in the AFC East with a 9-7 record, but look for Buffalo to upgrade the position next season. Orton didn't win many fantasy leagues this season.
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton benefitted from two fourth quarter drives, one in garbage time, to post solid fantasy numbers.
Insight: Orton was 32-of-49 with 329 yards three touchdowns and two interceptions. Losing to Oakland was certainly unexpected, but Orton's passing totals were about what fantasy owners thought he could do against an Oakland defense that has yielded 405 points.
Description: Bills wideout Sammy Watkins didn't let a hip issue keep him from posting solid fantasy numbers.
Insight: Watkins was always expected to play in Week 14 and caught seven balls for 127 yards against a pretty good Denver defense. He's been inconsistent, as rookies usually are, but he's a keeper in all dynasty leagues.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson was a busy guy Sunday, rushing eight times for 35 yards and catching 10 of 14 targets for 37 yards.
Insight: Jackson appears to have reasserted himself as the feature back in Buffalo, but his 18 touches didn't produce very good results. He'll continue to be the workhorse because the other options aren't very good.
Description: Bills wideout Sammy Watkins was disappointing again in Week 13.
Insight: Watkins caught just three passes for 11 yards, which can probably mostly be contributed to the fact Joe Haden was covering him a majority of the day. Look for Watkins to rebound versus the Broncos.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson rushed 21 times for 70 yards against the Browns.
Insight: Jackson appears to have reasserted himself as the feature back in Buffalo. Anthony Dixon was the Bills second leading rusher with six carries and 25 yards. Jackson is solid FLEX player moving forward.
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton threw for 190 yards and a touchdown versus the Browns on Sunday.
Insight: It was very strange to see Buffalo try to throw the ball so much in the first half against the 29th ranked run defense of Cleveland. Orton did throw two picks, but Buffalo got the running game going eventually, and Orton did just enough.
Description: The Jets and Bills contest for Week 12 at Ralph Wilson Stadium is still expected to begin at 1 PM ET on Sunday, despite the threat of a severe snowstorm.
Insight: There is expected to be seven feet of snow on the ground by kickoff, but for now it is scheduled to start on time. If there is a change, the NFL will most likely announce it by Thursday afternoon.
Description: It was Bills quarterback Kyle Orton's worst production of the season after five solid games of work.
Insight: Orton was just 22-of-39 for 193 yards and couldn't get the Bills into the end zone. The Dolphins defense is playing as well as anyine, so we think Orton will return to low-end status next game.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) is officially out for Thursday's game against Miami.
Insight: Jackson took to twitter to make the announcement, himself. Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown will continue to fill in, but neither player is more than an RB3, against the solid run-defense of the Dolphins. Jackson will now 10 days to get ready for Week 12.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Dolphins.
Insight: Jackson returned to the field last week and did not suffer a setback, so despite the questionable tag, he should continue to play through his groin injury. Jackson will likely lead the Bills in carries. Sammy Watkins is probable for Thursday.
Description: Bills wide receiver Chris Hogan shocked fantasy owners on Sunday afternoon.
Insight: He had five receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. With Sammy Watkins dealing with a groin injury, many thought Robert Woods would produce on Sunday, and although he had six catches for 52 yards, it was Hogan who stole the show.
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) is active against the Chiefs.
Insight: Starting Watkins is a tough call, as he pulled his groin this week in practice. With six teams on a bye, owners most likely will not have great options to replace Watkins, but should temper expectations on Sunday.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) is officially active Sunday versus Kansas City.
Insight: Groin injuries are always tough, but we'd like to think Jackson should see his normal amount of snaps. With all the byes this week, owners should start Jackson as they normally would, but expect Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown to be somewhat mixed in.
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) did not practice Thursday or Friday so we can't call him anything better than questionable.
Insight: He re-tweaked his groin during Wednesday's practice and could not finish the session. Most still expect him to play Sunday, but it would have been more comforting if we saw him on the practice field Friday. Fantasy owners who plan on starting him will have to wait for inactives an hour before game time to be sure he's a go.
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) did not practice Thursday.
Insight: He re-tweaked his groin during Wednesday's practice and could not finish the session. Most still expect him to play Sunday, but it will be more comforting if we see him on the practice field Friday.
Description: Bills receiver Sammy Watkins (groin) was limited on Wednesday.
Insight: He re-tweaked his groin during practice and could not finish the session. This is not a good sign, but before we jump to any conclusions, we will await word to see if Watkins returns to practice on Thursday or Friday.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson (groin) returned to practice on Wednesday.
Insight: He was expected to miss four weeks, so this is good news for Jackson-owners. There is still no clarity on whether Jackson will suit up on Sunday, but this is clearly a step in the right direction.
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins had a nice afternoon, but made a big rookie mistake on Sunday.
Insight: Watkins had three catches for 157 yards and one touchdown, but fantasy owners will be talking about his 84-yard reception in the second quarter, as he thought he had a walk-in score. However, Watkins was caught from behind, leading to a two-yard Frank Summers touchdown-run.
Description: Bills receiver Robert Woods left Sunday's game against the Jets with an apparent back injury.
Insight: He went into the locker room towards the end of the second quarter, and Buffalo is calling his return questionable. Before he went down, Woods had three receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon will start at runing back Sunday against the Jets.
Insight: Fred Jackson is oficially inactive, and Dixon figures to get a decent amount of chances. However, we still like Bryce Brown as the tailback to produce the best fantasy numbers between the two, moving forward.
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown was working with the second team in Wednesday's practice according to Bills reporter Mike Rodak.
Insight: Things could, of course, change over the next few days. Brown and Anthony Dixon figure to share the time and we think Brown is the more explosive of the two, but the bigger Dixon is likely to get the goal line work.
Description: Former Cowboys running back Phillip Tanner has been signed by the Buffalo Bills.
Insight: Not surprising that the Bills would go out an find a running back to replace C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. For fantasy owners he's just insurance behind Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon and has no fantasy value.
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown could end up being the big "winner" after injuries to Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller.
Insight: It's up to Brown and Anthony Dixon to carry the Bills running game for the next few weeks and maybe the next month. We think Brown is the more likely every down back with Dixon the red zone guy.
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught nine passes for 122 yards against the Vikings in Week 7.
Insight: Owners were likely frustrated with Watkins' poor performance against New England last week, but he was stuck on Revis Island. Back on the main land now, Watkins lit up the Vikings cornerbacks. Kyle Orton and Watkins seem to have great chemistry and it is getting better every week.
Description: Bills running back Anthony Dixon rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries after C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson left Sunday's game with injuries.
Insight: Spiller could be out for some time with a broken collar bone. Jackson suffered an injury to his groin. Dixon and fellow running back Bryce Brown will be top waiver wire pickups this week if Jackson cannot go in Week 8.
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller had to be carted off the field on Sunday against the Vikings. UPDATE: Spiller has been diagnosed with a broke collarbone according to Jason La Confora of CBS Sports.
Insight: Spiller has a shoulder injury. We do not yet know if he will return. Fred Jackson is already out of the game with a groin injury.
Description: Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett told ESPN he "wants to continue feeding" C.J. Spiller.
Insight: That slightly puts a damper on Fred Jackon's big game last week. Owners of either Bills running back should continue to expect a split backfield. Spiller played just 12 snaps last week, but in every previous game, he had at least 13 touches. He likely saw only 12 snaps against the Patriots last week because he lost a fumble.
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught just two passes for 27 yards in Week 6.
Insight: After seven catches in Kyle Orton's first start, Watkins was pretty disappointing as he failed to score three fantasy points. Who knows which receiver Kyle Orton will favor next week. On a positive note, Watkins could have struggled having to face Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis. Next week's matchup with the Vikings should be easier.
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler was the leading receiver for Buffalo in Week 6 against the Patriots.
Insight: Chandler caught six passes for 105 yards. Kyle Orton looks very comfortable with Chandler as he only targeted receiver Robert Woods more than he targeted his tight end. Chandler is a solid TE1 in 12-team leagues going forward.
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller played just 12 of 69 snaps, according to the box score.
Insight: It wasn't long ago that he was supposed to be the fantasy darling who was going to be run until he puked. His fantasy value is minimal these days with Fred Jackson seeing 75 percent of the snaps and 14 touches to six against New England.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson again received more carries then fellow running back C.J. Spiller in Week 6.
Insight: Jackson only gained 26 yards on 10 carries and caught four passes for 17 more yards, but he did score a rushing touchdown. Jackson is proving he is the better back to own in the Bills backfield.
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught seven balls for 87 yards in Kyle Orton's first start with the team on Sunday against the Lions.
Insight: Watkins led the team with 12 targets, which is a great sign since it appears Orton and Watkins have chemistry after just one week of practice. The receiver is still boom-or-bust but perhaps he will get more opportunities with Orton throwing to him.
Description: Bills running back Fred Jackson was a bell cow for Buffalo on Sunday against the Lions.
Insight: Jackson led the team with 10 carries and 49 yards. He also tied Sammy Watkins with seven receptions and 58 yards. In addition, Jackson scored a two-point conversion. He briefly left the game but returned shortly afterwards. Jackson is the best play in the Buffalo backfield.
Description: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins is starting against the Lions on Sunday.
Insight: With veteran quarterback Kyle Orton, we would temper the expectations for Watkins this week, but apparently the new quarterback and Watkins have built some chemistry in the short time working together. Watkins' production can't get much worse than it was with E.J. Manuel.
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel has been demoted for Week 5 against Atlanta. Kyle Orton will get the start.
Insight: Although the Bills started 2-0, it was mainly on the strength of the defense and this is a move designed to win now. Manuel still has long-term value, though it may take time to rebuild his confidence.
Description: Bills quarterback Kyle Orton has been named the starter over E.J. Manuel for Week 5 against Atlanta.
Insight: Orton is a solid backup, but not a fantasy starter anymore. In four games this season Manuel never threw for more than 238 yards and the change could perk up fantasy values across the board as the offense won't be limited with a veteran under center.
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller has decent day on Sunday.
Insight: He had 15 carries for 60 yards and three receptions for 24 yards, but continues to be handcuffed by Fred Jackson. Jackson finished the day with 33 rushing yards and six catches for 52 yards. If both players are in the lineup, they are both RB3/flex options at best.
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel continues to struggle statistically and today it caught up with the Bills.
Insight: Manuel went 23-of-39 for 238 yards and one touchdown. The good news is he didn't throw an interception and has just one pick all season. The bad news is he's thrown just two touchdown passes in three games.
Description: Buffalo QB E.J. Manuel hasn't done a lot statistically, but he does have his Bills undeafeated.
Insight: He passed for one and rushed for one touchdown in the season opener, but he's only averaging 187.5 ypg through the air. He has a young receiving corps in which to grow with and we expect his yardage numbers will improve as the season goes along. At least until the weather turns ugly.
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson is still getting a similar workload as C.J. Spiller though he's yet to taste the end zone.
Insight: The 33-year-old Jackson is a solid all-around runner and pass receiver and usually gets more touchdown opportunities than Spiller to keep him fantasy-worthy. Without the touchdown advantage his fantasy value as a starter is questionable.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught eight passes for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: Watkins was clearly E.J. Manuel's favorite target as he threw it in his direction 11 times. That's impressive considering Fred Jackson was next on the team with four targets. Watkins clearly proved he is talented enough to crack your fantasy lineups, but whether he is a reliable receiver all season will depend on Manuel's development.
Description: Bills running back C.J. Spiller returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown against the Dolphins in Week 2.
Insight: Spiller is still not the focal point of the Buffalo rushing attack as Fred Jackson and Spiller each had 12 carries, but Spiller proved Sunday that he is the bigger splash player. He will be boom or bust all year long but his ceiling is much higher than Jackson's.
Description: The Bills ran 22 of their 57 offensive plays in Week 1 from a zone-read formation.
Insight: Buffalo had the second most zone-read plays in the NFL last year so this isn't exactly a huge surprise. Doug Marrone certainly does not want to overuse his quarterback in the running game, but he should remain an important part of the team's rushing attack, especially in goal-line situations against the Dolphins. Miami will be without two of its starting linebackers on Sunday.
Description: Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Insight: The Bills are a sneaky defense/special teams start this year, but not in Week 1. They are on the road against a potent Bears offense. With Gilmore out, it confirms the fact that the Bills defense should be on your bench.
Description: Bills backup running back Bryce Brown is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Insight: It is clear now, at least for Week 1, that Doug Marrone will feature C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson and Anthony Dixon. As the week progressed, it sounded like Jackson would get the most carries, Dixon would be featured in goal-line situations and Spiller would receive the best opportunity to catch passes and return punts and kick offs.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) practiced fully again on Thursday.
Insight: Watkins fully returned to practice on Wednesday, so this is the second straight day he practiced fully. Watkins will be ready for the Bears, but with E.J. Manuel throwing him passes, he has a very low ceiling.
Description: C.J. Spiller will be the Bills' No. 1 kickoff returner this season according to buffalobills.com.
Insight: Although this sounds great from the outside, Spiller will likely see a drop in touches on the offense if he is indeed returning kicks. Featured running backs are never used on special teams. Conversely, Fred Jackson owners love hearing this because it reaffirms what we believed in preseason: Jackson will still have a major role in the Bills backfield this year.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
Insight: Watkins has suffered two rib injuries during training camp and the preseason. Its a bit of a concern but of more concern is the abysmal play of E.J. Manuel. Watkins fantasy value is limited by his quarterback's ability to get him the football.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (rib injury) was on the practice field Monday.
Insight: Watkins has suffered two rib injuries during training camp and the preseason. Its a bit of a concern that he's not getting better, but of more concern to fantasy owners is the abysmal play of E.J. Manuel which limits Watkins' upside.
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 3-of-7 passes for 56 yards in the Bills' preseason finale Thursday night.
Insight: With most starters not playing in the fourth preseason game across the league, the fact Manuel played speaks volumes as to how worried the Bills coaching staff probably is about their second-year quarterback. Manuel finished the preseason 50-of-82 for 517 yards, one touchdown, three turnovers and six sacks taken.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Thursday's preseason finale with a rib injury.
Insight: Watkins suffered the injury on a slant pattern where quarterback E.J. Manuel "stared him down" and then over threw him by "a good yard and a half". It's unclear if this is a reaggravation of his previous injury or if this is a new rib injury for Watkins. The receiver suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game.
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Manuel probably didn't play quite as well as his stat line indicates. Even though the interception wasn't his fault because intented target, Scott Chandler, fell down, Manuel threw a couple other near interceptions by throwing into double coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that the Tampa Bay defense returned for a touchdown. Buffalo gained only 82 yards in the first half. A lot of Manuel's production came against the second string Tampa Bay defense in the third quarter.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) returned to practice Tuesday, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: Watkins suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game. He was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, called a bruise by the Buffalo News.
Insight: That's a lot better than broken, but figure the rookie receiver to sit out for a while. Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson had another busy game, rushing six times for 27 yards and catching seven balls for 28 yards.
Insight: C.J. Spiller had six touches. The 33-year-old Jackson is a solid all-around runner and pass receiver and he gets the goal-line opportunites which limits Spillers' fantasy value and keeps Jackson as a viable fantasy option.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, but Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that he is fine.
Insight: Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel. He's a high-upside WR3 who comes with a seventh-round ADP.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins caught three balls for 21 yards,
Insight: That's a big improvement over the Hall of Fame game where he was shut out of the box score but he's not inspiring must confidence that he can become a fantasy-worthy receiver in his first season.
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler returned to practice Tuesday after missing more than a week due to a groin injury.
Insight: Chandler sat out the preseason opener on Sunday. He has increased his catches and yardage in two straight seasons but dropped from six TDs in 2011 and 2012 to two last year. The additions of Sammy Watkins and red-zone weapon Mike Williams won't help Chandler become fantasy-relevant in 2014.
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson has signed a one-year extension worth $2.6 million.
Insight: Jackson is now signed for the next two seasons. The extension is a sign that the team isn't ready to phase out the 33-year-old Jackson from the offense even though C.J. Spiller is healthy and the Bills acquired Bryce Brown. Jackson had 253 touches last season and scored 10 touchdowns. He'll probably see closer to 200 this season but still has RB2 upside because of his goal-line work.
Description: Bills tight end Scott Chandler suffered a groin injury on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
Insight: Tony Moeaki went down with a hamstring injury on Friday and Chris Gragg spent two days in the hospital with heat-related cramps. Chandler has increased his catches and yardage in two straight seasons but dropped from six TDs in 2011 and 2012 to two last year. The additions of Sammy Watkins and red-zone weapon Mike Williams won't help Chandler become fantasy-relevant.
Description: According to buffalobills.com, C.J. Spiller is likely to touch the ball 20 times per game "if the offense is operating at peak efficiency."
Insight: The Bills also said last year that Spiller would get the ball until he threw up and then gave him 15.7 touches per game, so we aren't buying he's going to be a 320-touches-per-year guy even if he's 100 percent healthy. Fred Jackson is still around to steal third-down work and goal-line carries and the Bills added Bryce Brown in case the 33-year-old Jackson finally hits a wall. At most, Spiller will get 275 touches this season. He's being drafted 16th among running backs on fantasyfootballcalculator.com, so while he's not as risky as last season he still a high-risk, high-reward option.
