Insight: It appears to be a routine day off. Intersting the Nationals will start Danny Espinosa and not Asdrubal Cabrera at short. With 20 homers, 77 RBI, 52 runs and 15 steals, Desmond is once again one of fantasy's top shortstops.

Description: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro may miss up to a week after the death of a relative and three friends in a car crash in the Dominican Republic, according to Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago.
Insight: Castro will likely be placed on the bereavement list. Javier Baez started at shortstop Wednesday and may stay there until Castro returns.

Description: Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes has batted .349 with 13 doubles, a triple, three homers, 18 RBI, 36 runs and eight steals in his last 48 games.
Insight: He's raised his average from .247 to .294 in that span. Reyes went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI, two runs and a steal Wednesday against the Brewers.

Description: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro has been scratched from the lineup Wednesday due to a family emergency, according to Patrick Mooney of csnchicago.com.
Insight: Castro has batted .380 with two homers, eight RBI and eight runs in August. Javier Baez, a shortstop by trade, will start in Castro's place while Chris Valaika handles second base.

Description: Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons left Tuesday's game with a sore left hip, but he's in the lineup Wednesday.
Insight: He was out of the lineup for nine games with an ankle injury earlier this month. The defensive ace has batted .252 with very little power and speed.

Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy said his thumb injury is "definitely not in the past," according to Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun.
Insight: Hardy sat out three games with the injury and has gone 7-for-20 with a double and a homer in five games since he returned. He's batting .385 with four doubles, three homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs in August. The shortstop admitted he's "about 50 percent."

Description: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar made his first All-Star team this year, but he's been a disaster in the second half, hitting .208 with two RBI in 106 at-bats.
Insight: Aybar is also 3-for-28 (.107) in his career against Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz. Avoid him Wednesday.

Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a steal Tuesday against Arizona.
Insight: Desmond didn't have any extra-base hits, but he drove home both Anthony Rendon and Jason Werth twice on singles. With 20 homers, 77 RBI, 52 runs and 15 steals, Desmond has been one of fantasy's top shortstops for a third straight season.

Description: Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer said his forearm is not 100 percent, according to Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Mercer is going to try to play through his forearm strain. "I don't think it's going to be completely healed," he said. "I know that." Mercer has hit .306 over his last 68 games and .348 in August.

Description: Arizona shortstop Chris Owings (shoulder injury) is expected to being a rehab assignment Sunday, according to an Arizona Republic report.
Insight: The shortstop batted .317 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 12 RBI, nine runs and one steal in June and .277 with a .771 OPS for the season. Didi Gregorius has been struggling of late, batting just .132 over the past 11 games.

Description: Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning to lift St. Louis over Cincinnati, 6-5, on Monday. Peralta went 3-for-5 with a double.
Insight: The shortstop has three multi-hit games in the last four days. During that stretch, he also has four RBI, three doubles, two runs and a walk.

Description: Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is not in Monday's starting lineup.
Insight: Rollins was just 1-for-11 over the weekend. He remains a decentlow-end fantasy shortstop despite batting .236, because he has power (15 HR), can knock in runs (50 RBI), score runs (65) and steal bases (24).
Jordy Mercer, SS, PITHot8/18/2014 12:09:00 PM
Description: Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer pinch ran in the ninth inning and remained in the game for extra innings on Sunday night. He is listed as probable for Monday's game against Atlanta.
Insight: Mercer was having a great second half before his forearm injury, batting .319 in July and .348 in 13 games in August. If doesn't suffer a setback, Mercer a can be a viable fantasy option down the stretch.
Zack Cozart, SS, CIN8/17/2014 11:22:00 AM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart is 5-for-9 (.556) with three extra-base hits and a 1.711 OPS versus Rockies Game 1 starter Jordan Lyles.
Insight: Cozart's production has dropped each season since his debut in 2011, but he's been batting .282 over the past two weeks and may be worth a one-day flier in this favorable matchup.
Alcides Escobar, SS, KAN8/16/2014 12:16:00 PM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar has gone 5-for-11 (.455) with a double and a homer against Twins starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: Escobar went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI Friday afternoon. He's hitting .277 with 40 RBI, 54 runs and 24 steals on the year and shouldn't cost too much on Saturday.

Description: Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer isn't in the lineup Friday night due to a forearm injury, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Mercer has batted .307 with six homers, 35 RBI, 34 runs and an .817 OPS over his last 66 games, but he is only hitting .264 with a .696 OPS on the season because he hit .190 with one homer and a .487 OPS in his first 47 games. Super-utilityman Josh Harrison is starting at shortstop for the first time this year.

Insight: He was out of the lineup for six straight games them played two Wednesday and Thursday. Simmons is a great glove man, but he's hitting .251 with five home runs and a .639 OPS.

Insight: Hardy has been dealing with a sprained left thumb and hasn't played since last Saturday. He went 11-for-23 with three doubles, two homers and seven RBI over his last six games before the injury.
Jimmy Rollins, SS, PHI8/15/2014 1:56:00 PM
Description: Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is a .143 hitter (2-for-14) versus Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner.
Insight: Rollins has not hit much at AT&T Park, but remains a decent fantasy shortstop despite batting .239, because he has power (15 HR), can knock in runs (50 RBI), score runs (62) and steal bases (24).
Alcides Escobar, SS, KAN8/15/2014 1:38:00 PM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar is 6-for-11 (.545) versus Twins starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Escobar has put together a solid season for fantasy owners. He has already exceeded his 2013 stolen base total (24) and is batting .275 with 54 runs scored and 37 RBI.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, LOS8/14/2014 2:18:00 PM
Description: Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez, on the disabled list with an oblique strain, played catch Wednesday.
Insight: Ramirez (.277, 12 HR, 58 RBI, 12 SB) is eligible to return on Aug. 24, but the real test will be when he tries to swing the bat at game speed. The talented shortstop has missed games with shoulder, calf and wrist injuries this season, but this is his first trip to the DL.
Jean Segura, SS, MIL8/14/2014 1:10:00 PM
Description: Brewers shortstop Jean Segura is not in Thursday's starting lineup, Elian Herrera gets the nod.
Insight: The shortstop has hit .234 with four home runs, 16 steals and a .584 OPS this season after fading badly following his All-Star appearance last year. He's also been dealing with a quad injury.

Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie (fractured finger) played Wednesday, but is expected to go on the disabled list.
Insight: Lowrie (.238, 5 HR, 42 RBI) tried, but the broken finger effected his hitting and throwing. Lowrie has not been able to reproduce last season's solid numbers (.290, 15 HR, 75 RBI, 80 runs). The A's are going to call up Andy Parrino.

Description: You weren't going to start the .149 hitting Jayson Nix anyway, but it's interesting to note that he's a career 0-for-11 with nine strikeouts against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: That's not seeing the ball well. In the league seven seasons, the utility infielder has never batted above .243, and has zero fantasy value.
Troy Tulowitzki, SS, COL8/13/2014 10:33:00 PM
Description: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the labrum in his left hip Friday, according to Thomas Harding.
Insight: Another promising season ruined by an injury for Tulowitzki. He's played 143 games or less in each of the last five seasons. In 91 games this year, he batted .340 with 21 homers, 52 RBI, 71 runs and a 1.035 OPS.

Insight: Lowrie has a fractured right index finger, but he's going to try to play through it. He hasn't had a good season at the plate and the injury won't help him turn things around.

Insight: Desmond has hit just .214 in August and .244 this season, but with 20 homers, 72 RBI and 13 steals, he's a superb fantasy shortstop.

Insight: Lowrie intends to keep playing through the injury. He hasn't had a good season at the plate and the injury won't help him turn things around.

Insight: Cabrera was scratched from Sunday's game with a left hamstring cramp. He missed all but three games in July due to a strain in the same hamstring. Cabrera had batted .414 with five steals in August. It's been a pretty forgettable season for the 27-year-old shortstop.

Insight: Tulowitzki suffered what was called a "left hip flexor strain" on July 19, but could actually be a labrum issue, according to Thomas Harding of mlb.com. Stay tuned, this would be season ending if it requires surgery.

Insight: The shortstop batted .317 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 12 RBI, nine runs and one steal in June and .277 with a .771 OPS for the season. He's still about two weeks away from returning as long as there are no setbacks. Didi Gregorius filled in nicely in July, but his production has taken a big dip in August (.227, .573 OPS).

Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie (finger) is in the lineup Friday, according to John Hickey of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Lowrie was out of the starting lineup the last three games due to a bruised finger. His .290 average, 15 homers and 75 RBI last season made him a strong option at shortstop for fantasy owners, but he's followed up that campaign with a .245 average, five homers and 42 RBI.

Description: Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons left Tuesday's game with a left ankle sprain and is still walking with a limp, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Insight: Simmons' ankle swelled up after he stopped icing it Tuesday night. He's a great glove man, but he's hitting .249 with five home runs and a .637 OPS, so he isn't a good fantasy option anyway.

Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus apparently has no clue against Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer having gone 0-for-7 with four strikeouts.
Insight: Andrus has a 13-game hitting streak on the line, but he'll have to make an adjustment if he wants to extend it further. He's batting .274 with 30 RBI, 59 runs scored and 21 steals.
Derek Jeter, SS, NYY8/7/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is just 1-for-15 in his career versus Rick Porcello and is not in the starting lineup.
Insight: The consistent Jeter has batted exactly .272 in two of the four months this season and .275 and .289 in the others. He's not the fantasy value he once was as he finishes out his Hall of Fame career. Stephen Drew draws the shortstop assignment.

Insight: Reyes had a big July (.324) and has continured raking into August (.333), but this matchup has been a tough one for him.
