Shortstop Player Notes
For The Last 15 Days

Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth on Friday as Boston defeated Baltimore, 3-2.
Insight: Bogaerts was the only Red Sox with two hits in the game. His first single broke up a no-hit bid in the fifth. He also scored on catcher Ryan Hanigan's home run. Bogaerts is hitting .395 through 10 games.
Yunel Escobar, SS, WAS4/17/2015 10:30:00 PM
Description: Nationals shortstop Yunel Escobar left Friday's game after tweaking his groin according to MLB.com.
Insight: The team is going to see how Escobar feels on Saturday before sending him to the disabled list. Escobar is hitting .286 with a home run and RBI in 11 games this season.
Ian Desmond, SS, WAS4/17/2015 10:28:00 PM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond was 3-for-4 with two runs scored as Washington beat Philadelphia, 7-2, on Friday.
Insight: Desmond had three singles and scored in the first and seventh innings. He has a hit in four straight games, batting .500 with a double, home run and three RBI over that span.
Jose Iglesias, SS, DET4/17/2015 5:00:00 PM
Description: Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI-single in the ninth as Detroit beat the Chicago White Sox, 2-1.
Insight: With his two hits, Iglesias raised his batting average to .484, which is quite impressive for the defensive-minded shortstop even if it is only 10 games. He still doesn't have much power and won't drive in runs hitting ninth, but Iglesias is outplaying owners expectations through a week and a half.
Jose Reyes, SS, TOR4/17/2015 11:40:00 AM
Description: Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes, who left Thursday's game with soreness in his left ribs, has been diagnosed with a small fracture, according to beat writer Ben Nicholson-Smith.
Insight: Reyes had been dealing with an oblique injury, but it is unclear if this is the same injury. The Blue Jays will update whether he can play through it or need a trip to the DL soon.
Jean Segura, SS, MIL4/17/2015 9:23:00 AM
Description: Brewers shortstop Jean Segura could see a boost in production as he's expected to move to the top of the Milwaukee lineup with leadoff hitter Carlos Gomez sidelined by a hamstring injury.
Insight: Segura has batted mostly in the No. 7 hole this season, but has seen success as a No. 2 hitter in the past. He's batting .323 through the first nine games.

Description: Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes left Thursday's game with soreness in his left ribs according to MLB.com.
Insight: Reyes has been dealing with an oblique injury, but it is unclear if this is the same injury. The Blue Jays will probably update Reyes' status after the game.
Jean Segura, SS, MIL4/16/2015 5:28:00 PM
Description: Brewers shortstop Jean Segura wetn 1-for-4 in the, 4-0, loss to the Cardinals on Thursday.
Insight: Milwaukee only had six hits and was shutout, so no one in the lineup stood out. Segura is off to a nice start, hitting .323 in nine games. He hit lead off on Thursday with no Carlos Gomez in the lineup.
Jose Reyes, SS, TORHot4/16/2015 10:52:00 AM
Description: Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes is a career .450 hitter (9-for-20) against Rays starter Chris Archer.
Insight: What we really like is that he's 3-for-3 is stolen base attempts. Maybe it will get him running as he's only attempted one stolen base this season. He's batting .333 this season through the first nine games.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS4/15/2015 4:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez hit another homer Wednesday against the Nationals.
Insight: Ramirez already has four homers and nine RBIs with his new team, and will have the opportunity to have a monster campaign.
Ian Desmond, SS, WAS4/15/2015 4:48:00 PM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond clubbed his first homer of the season on Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: It was his lone hit of the game. Owners should expect Desmond to improve on his .206/.270/.382 line quickly.
Ian Desmond, SS, WAS4/14/2015 9:43:00 PM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond continues to struggle in the field, but he did have three hits on Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Desmond went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. It was easily his best offensive game in the young season. Unfortunately, Desmond also committed his sixth error of the season. Fantasy owners don't need to worry about Desmond's slow offensive start, but at some point, the defensive errors is a bit worrisome although Washington doesn't really have any other options for shortstop besides Desmond.
Xander Bogaerts, SS, BOSHot4/14/2015 2:50:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts is not in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Insight: Brock Holt will get the start. Since a hitless opening day, Boaerts has batted safely in six stright games and has a .433 batting average. He should be back for the next game.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS4/14/2015 2:45:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez is probable for Tuesday's game against Washington due to a sore right foot.
Insight: Ramirez fouled a ball off his foot in Monday's game and the team did a scan which came back negative. Given his injury history, there is always the possibility that the team will play it safe, but at this time we expect him to play. Update: Ramirez is in Tuesday's lineup.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS4/14/2015 10:34:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez is probable for Tuesday's game against Washington due to a sore right foot.
Insight: Ramirez fouled a ball off his foot in Monday's game and the team did a scan which came back negative. Given his injury history, there is always the possibility that the team will play it safe, but at this time we expect him to play.
Jhonny Peralta, SS, STL4/13/2015 7:27:00 PM
Description: Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta picked up two RBIs Monday against the Brewers.
Insight: He went 2-for-4 with a walk as well. Peralta has a solid .360/.407/.600 line through six games this season.
Justin Turner, SS, LOS4/13/2015 10:37:00 AM
Description: Dodgers infielder Justin Turner got spiked in Saturday's game by A.J. Pollock, but should be ready to go.
Insight: Turner is off to a slow start in limited action and has very little fantasy value.
J.J. Hardy, SS, BAL4/13/2015 10:08:00 AM
Description: Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy (shoulder) could start a rehab assignment by the end of the week., according to a Baltimore Sun report.
Insight: Everth Cabrera has gotten most of the work with Hardy sidelined, but hasn't done much to get fantasy owners excited.
Starlin Castro, SS, CHC4/12/2015 9:33:00 AM
Description: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was 3-for-5 with a home run in the, 9-5, victory over the Rockies on Saturday.
Insight: Castro picked up two RBI as well, hitting a solo home run in the fifth and an infield single that scored a run in the sixth. Castro is hitting .375 with a .563 slugging percentage to start the year.
Jean Segura, SS, MIL4/11/2015 10:57:00 PM
Description: Brewers shortstop Jean Segura showed off some power in Milwaukee's first victory of the season.
Insight: Segura hit a big solo home run off Pirates starter Vance Worley. The Sports Network included Segura on its fantasy sleeper team and said a lot of Segura's value will depend on his start to the season. Well, he is hitting .400 in the first five games. Keep an eye on Segura this month.
Jose Iglesias, SS, DET4/11/2015 1:06:00 PM
Description: Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias will get Saturday off.
Insight: No injury, just a routine day of rest. Given that he's started the season 9-for-15 (.600), he probably would prefer to be out there. Andrew Romine will get the start.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS4/11/2015 11:46:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: No surprise here. The Red Sox know Ramirez's injury history and after playing 19 innings last night aren't going to push him in an April game.
Jed Lowrie, SS, HOU4/10/2015 8:34:00 PM
Description: Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie hit a home run for the second consecutive game.
Insight: He took Derek Holland deep in the first and finished 1-for-4 on the day. It was also Lowrie's second RBI through four games.
Troy Tulowitzki, SS, COL4/10/2015 7:49:00 PM
Description: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki had two hits and two RBIs Friday against the Cubs.
Insight: Tulowitzki went 2-for-4 and is ooff to a hot start. He is batting .444 through four games this season.
Luis Valbuena, SS, CLE4/10/2015 2:59:00 PM
Description: Houston third baseman Luis Valbuena is not in Friday's lineup.
Insight: No injury, he's just sitting against the left-hander. Jonathan Villar will get the start. Valbuena's future will be short-term only with Kris Bryant just over the horizon.
Alexei Ramirez, SS, CWSCold4/10/2015 10:20:00 AM
Description: White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez is just 1-for-11 (.091) against Minnesota left-hander Tommy Milone.
Insight: Ramirez hasn't started the season well, going just 1-for-9 in the series with the Royals, so despite what appears to be a gale force wind blowing out to left, (20 mph) he might not be able to take advantage of the situation.
Xander Bogaerts, SS, BOS4/9/2015 10:14:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts had the big blow Thursday versus Philadelphia.
Insight: He went 3-for-4 with a three-RBI triple in the six-run third. Bogaerts also walked and is now hitting .364 through three games this season.
Ian Desmond, SS, WAS4/9/2015 4:33:00 PM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond went 2-for-3 during Thursdau's loss to the Mets.
Insight: Desmond scored two runs and had a walk as well. The two hits were his first two knocks of the young season.
Elvis Andrus, SS, TEX4/9/2015 1:18:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus will be batting in the No. 7 hole on Thursday after batting second in the first two contests.
Insight: That's likely going to take a significant bite out of his fantasy value if it's a permanent move. Andrus has averaged .272 with 84 runs and 32 steals over the past six seasons, but batting seventh he probably wouldn't see 662 plate appearances as he has in the past.
Alcides Escobar, SS, KAN4/9/2015 10:16:00 AM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar is an ugly 1-for-18 (.056) with six strikeouts versus White Sox left-hander John Danks.
Insight: Escobar pit together a nice 2014 season, batting .285 with 74 runs scored and 31 steals as he played in all 162 games. He's started the season strong with five hits in nine at-bats, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Starlin Castro, SS, CHC4/8/2015 4:49:00 PM
Description: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro had an RBI-single in the seventh to help Chicago beat St. Louis, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Castro was 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored in the victory. Anthony Rizzo reached on a hit batsman to start the frame and then went to second on an wild pickoff throw from Lance Lynn. Castro's single to left center scored Rizzo, and then Castro scored on Miguel Montero's sacrifice fly two at-bats later. Castro went 2-for-7 in the first two games in 2015.
Jose Iglesias, SS, DET4/8/2015 4:20:00 PM
Description: Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias was 4-for-4 with a walk and three runs in the, 11-0, victory over the Twins on Wednesday.
Insight: Detroit has outscored Minnesota, 15-0, in the first two games of the season. Iglesias is batting an incredible .857 in the first two games and has shown off tremendous speed on the base paths. On Wednesday, he scored from first on a double. Iglesias will obviously not keep up the batting average, but he might be a budding star in one of the best lineups in the American League.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS4/8/2015 11:15:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez has five home runs and seven RBI in his career versus Phillies starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Ramirez had two home runs on Monday versus Cole Hamels, so perhaps he keeps it going in this favorable matchup. Ramirez is also 10-for-29 with a double and two walks in his career against Harang.
Starlin Castro, SS, CHC4/8/2015 11:03:00 AM
Description: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro is a career .333 hitter against Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn.
Insight: Castro is 10-for-30 versus Lynn with four extra-base hits and three RBI. Castro will bat third for the Cubs on Wednesday. He went 1-for-4 on Sunday.
Troy Tulowitzki, SS, COL4/8/2015 9:14:00 AM
Description: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki had another multi-hit game in the second game of the season.
Insight: Tulowitzki was 3-for-5 on Monday and then 2-for-5 with a run and RBI on Tuesday. If he stays healthy, Tulowitzki is the top option at shortstop.
Hanley Ramirez, SS, BOS4/6/2015 6:38:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez hit a pair of home runs and had five RBI in his Boston debut in Philadelphia on Monday.
Insight: Ramirez went 2-for-4, hitting the first homer off Phillies starter Cole Hamels. Then, Ramirez hit a grand slam in the ninth off relief pitcher Jake Diekman. As hoped, Ramirez is already making an impact on this Boston team.
Troy Tulowitzki, SS, COL4/6/2015 5:39:00 PM
Description: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-5 on Opening Day as Colorado routed Milwaukee, 10-0.
Insight: Tulowitzki had two doubles, an RBI and scored three runs. If Tulo can stay healthy, he is clearly the best fantasy option at shortstop.
Jose Iglesias, SS, DET4/6/2015 4:31:00 PM
Description: Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias went 2-for-3 in the season opener against Minnesota and stole a pair of bases
Insight: Iglesias batted .303 last season in 350 at-bats, but stole just five bases. If he can stay healthy he could help in a few other categories this season.
Ian Desmond, SS, WAS4/6/2015 10:24:00 AM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond is 4-for-12 with a pair of home runs versus Mets starter Bartolo Colon.
Insight: Desmond must like knowing that he's going to see almost exclusively fastballs from Colon. Over 82 percent of Colon's pitchers were fastballs last season and he's been over 80 percent of more in six straight seasons. Desmond finished the year with 24 HR and 91 RBI.
